A gunman has shot at least one person at the Washington Navy Yard, a naval installation in the US capital, say officials.

The US Navy confirmed police had entered the building in search of a gunman, after at least three shots were fired at 08:20 local time (13:20 GMT).

The US Navy has confirmed one person was shot, but local news agencies said as many as three people were wounded.

Personnel at the base have been ordered to "shelter in place", the Navy said.

The US Navy said shots were reported to have been fired at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters at the yard in south-east Washington DC.

Dozens of emergency vehicles have converged on the site.

As many as 3,000 people work at the command, which engineers, purchases, builds and maintains ships and submarines for the Navy.

The Washington Navy Yard is the US Navy's oldest shore installation, first opened in the early 19th Century, according to the Navy.

Hope and and all Dakkanauts and their friends, families etc are all safe.

Initial reports are that the gunman is a middle aged man armed with an assault rifle and the U.S. Navy has confirmed that there is at least one injury.

let's hope there's no deaths or serious injuries.

Park Police landed a helicopter at the scene and have evacuated someone.

The initial reports of fatality are vague. FBI says the officer was "fatally wounded" while the DC/Metro police are saying that he was evacuated.

Probably just part of a checklist of things they do while the authorities figure out what the hell is going on.

Just about a mile away. Were it a full scale attack or something like that, manpads could easily target aircraft taking off. I'm just assuming that's why they did it.

I suspect it's a combination of that, and the fact that there are a gakload of helos coming and going over the Naval Yard. I live right down the river from Reagan.

Its a command HQ, so shooter is most likely Navy who worked there, since they keep commands secure.

Reports are of adult bald black male, dressed in all black, as the suspect at this point. Sounds like one guy only. However some other reports are saying three shooters, but that may have been earlier reports.

Still, it's what my money's on. Genuine workplace violence. NAVSEA wouldn't be a terrorist target, you'd need stickers on the car to get in, etc.

Yeah, but it seems like with a lot of mass shootings, at first the news often says "There may be multiple shooters." They did the same thing at Sandy Hook. If there is only one shooter my guess is it's workplace violence. If there are actually multiple shooters (I'm somewhat doubting that there actually are, but we will see) it might be more likely to be domestic terrorism.

yes. Further, if they are looking for others, it maynot mean those others are part of the attack. They may have just dropped the guy off for work or such. Just being positive here.

If we jumped from 6 dead to 12 dead it would seem likely there are multiple shooters.

Both CNN and FOx are quoting 12 now. Both are quoting a hunt for two other possible shooters.

Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old man from Fort Worth, Texas, was identified as the shooting suspect in the rampage that killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday.

The Associated Press, citing law enforcement sources, confirmed Alexis was the alleged gunman.

He recently began working as a civilian contractor for the Navy. Law enforcement officials told NBC News that they identified him via fingerprints.

It is unclear what his motive was, reported USA Today.

He allegedly entered the base with another man’s ID card who used to work there, officials said. The name of the man whose ID card was found is now being questioned by the FBI, which took the lead in the investigation earlier on Monday.

There is no information on a connection between Alexis and man whose name was on the ID card he used.

NBC reported that he allegedly shot the security guard with a shotgun and proceeded on through the building. He was also seen with an AR-15 rifle and a semiautomatic 9mm pistol, witnesses said.

NBC Washington reported that Alexis was arrested by the Fort Worth Police Department in 2010 on firearms charges. The Fort Worth Police Department listed a document with the name Aaron Alexis on its website, saying he was arrested in Sept. 4, 2010. And a Mugshots.com posting with a photo shows that a man named Aaron Alexis was arrested in Fort Worth on the same. It is unclear if the alleged shooter is the same person.

“What we lack is a sighting of somebody shooting, other than the dead shooter,” said a law enforcement official, who was not named, according to USA Today.

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said in a 2 p.m. press conference that 12 people were shot and killed in the incident. It is unclear if the shooter was included in the death toll.

A shelter-in-place was also put in place around the Navy Yard.

Washington D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said that there were a “number of” injuries, including to police officers.

There is another “potential” suspect, she added. The potential suspect is a black male who is in his 50s, with graying sideburns and an olive military uniform.

She said that the white male who was earlier named as a potential suspect was cleared.

This seems certainish now... there was an unfortunate (!) error earlier tonight when several news organisations named a person only to then retract/withdraw that person as the shooter.

Dreadful nasty business indeed.
