There have been some really great suggestions in here and I'm looking into it myself. The Chapter Tactics allow for a much better representation of some of the Chaos Legions then the actual CSM book, so I say keep your army WYSIWYG, inform your opponent, and go for it!

Iron Warriors <> Iron Hands or IF take your pick.

Ive seen plenty of stand ins, all dont WYSIWYG of course, where the "look" was chaos, but they used the C:sm dex, or even the GK dex.

and this is at tournaments FYI,
I have no problem wiht stand ins as long as it is clear what everything is.

last "stand in" guy I played, the guy even accepted every challenge when he didnt have to, just to be fluffier!

Behind you all the way here although I will admit that I do get tired of seeing the same color marine army used as all others. If you are building the list around CSM but they are chaos great. I am doing something similar with a Pre-Heresy turned successor by secret chapter myself. There really is no excuse to deny playing someone if its WYSIWYG.

As I build the army, I will stick to the chaos codex but I will likely pick up the SM codex later and use the Iron Hands rules.

In fact, this was suggested to me by a player at my club recently.

I will need to get a few more heavy tanks to take advantage of the IWND though.

The transition should be pretty painless though.

Lord - Captain
Sorceror - Librarian
Apostle - Chaplain
Warpsmith - Techmarine/MOTF

Marines - CSM
Oblits - Centurions

Terminators, dreadnoughts, raptors, and all the tanks (except daemon engines) have direct comparisons in the SM dex so no problem there. Also, as someone else said, a hell cannon would make an awesome looking chaos thunderfire.

Warp talons can also be used as vanguards.

The only potential problems would be cult troops, but I guess noise marines and thousand sons could be sternguard (maybe also plague marines) and berzerkers could be assault squads without jump packs, if they still have that option.

Possessed could also be some weird kind of assault squad, or allied Death company if you wanted some BA in there as well.

I am planning to make an iron warriors army using the space marine codex, I've heard this has happened many times before, i mean look at it this way, Thunderfire cannon forgefiends and the like, I've also heard marine players using the chaos marine codex for the sake of iron hands and stuff before the more recent 6th edition codex came out

Bezerkers fit in really well if you use the BT chapter tactics, you gain access to crusader squads (marines can have chainswords and up to 3 special weapons, sgt with combi weapon, special + heavy weapon)
