Well obviously! My sallies are too!

Now, compare them on a balanced footing, I'd rather face the scatter lasers across the board than the terminators inside a tank within charging distance! I might could get some cover against the laser. Not so much the hammers.

Assault cannons are actually kinda crappy, I think.

BLASPHEMY!!! They hit hard, hit a lot, and have rending to boot!

Speaking as someone who wants the new C:SM because of missing the assault cannons, I can happily say "Who the feth doesn't want them 4-shot rending weapons!?!?!

Thigs I've killed with them:
-LR's
-LRBT's
-Troops
-Troops
-Various other things

Assault cannons are the most versatile weapon in the game. There is nothing it cant kill. The master of the ravenwing in a landspeeder with twin linked BS5 assault cannon, bad day for my opponent.

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake.

The assault cannon has the most potential of doing damage (i.e. have rending to turn against anything to some affect), but the chances of getting those 6's are a bit low. The cyclone missile launcher can do damage more reliably, and at greater range. 2 S8 AP3 shots have a better chance of causing damage to MEQs, and will ID T4 characters it manages to hit, while the frag blasts will cause considerable damage against hordes or lightly armoured infantry. You also get to keep the storm bolter, for what that does. I feel the assault cannon is a bit too situational forrreliable use on termies.

Back to the main topic, I use tactical termies in casual games, and I enjoy using them. They grab a lot of attention due to the wide threat radius, and if it comes to assault, I'll usually get to swing, as most AP2 melee weaponry is at their pace now. I don't play competitively, so I wouldn't know how well they work there.

My BA don't fear assault cannons the least bit. That's a pretty good measuring stick for how poor of a weapon it is. Again, it's all about how the Imperium is forced to field them. And 24" still sucks for a "heavy" weapon.
