Ibram Gaunt has had quite a rich history of highs and lows. Unbeatable in depth and character. Nobody has had as much written about them and the worlds they live in as he has.

Farsight.
Cypher.
Bastonne. Simply because I want Stormtrooper regiments on the table. That could be unlocked by Bastonne, which would warrant more fluff in the codex.
That is why I want to hear more about Bastonne
The other two are simply interesting and (in Farsight's case) well written characters.

On a serious note Eldrad Ulthuran would be my vote, hes been everywhere and done everything. Also hes a nice guy, even tried to stop the Heresy despite being from a race that doesn't give two feths about pathetic humans killing each other.

Comander Farsight, a great warrior, a humble and noble soul, but most importantly a believable one. I love him even more after the supplement's fluff extended the background on him massively.
I don't really like any of the Primarchs, since they have been written about by so many different authors they really just fall apart, the Lion for example just ends up coming across as a whiny, paranoid, spoiled, brat.
Thirianna from Path of the Eldar is an interesting character, exploring just how hard it is to not alter with the outcome of events when it is within your power to do so.
Sevatar is a good character too, imo, taking a half-serious jokeresque look on the Heresy and Great Crusade.

Talk about the ultimate complex Father - Son relationship. It's killing me not to know more about these two than what little I've read in Ahriman:Exile. @.@
For some reason, I just picture Magnus' body fused to a thrown of magic, his eye sockets pinned open and mouth hung impossible wide, as mind-blasting truths are ripped through his body and he is forced to speak them all as incoherrently as they come to him. It is because of his ultimate insight the likes of which neither Fateweaver nor Tzeentch himself are capable of understanding, that not only makes Magnus supremely powerful, but also supremely crippled. It would be interesting to see if this much is as true as I think it is. Especially with Magnus, in his mirth, still being consumed by Change.

Gotta go with Gaunt, mainly because it was my intro to the Black Library books.
Ciaphas Cain is pretty awesome for the fact of the broad range of threat he's faced and the humor brought into the reading.
For Space Marines, I've gotta go with the characters from Deathwatch, very unique, can't wait for the sequel.
Eisenhorn was epic.
In HH, the Raven Guard dude who chops Lucius' nuts, one of the few moments where the "good guy" actually wins... sort of... but not really...
Man I'm on a roll now, don't know where to stop...

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Eisenhorn, man is a beast. This is the guy who has been declared Excomunicate Traitoris more times this week than you will in your lifetime. That badass Gideon Ravenor? Eisenhorn trained the guy, and once famously quoted "Though ye be a brain a box Gideon, it's cool, I'll get them to paint an 'I' on it so you can go adventuring without my permission." And he has a walking stick that is actually a force sword. He's like your grandad, but only better.

Ciaphias Cain gets an honourable mention, but of all the Black Library stuff I'd have to give it to Eisenhorn due to being a BAWSS. Eisenhorn is much more grimdark, but Cain is the kind of fun 40k needs sometimes. This shows exactly what kind of person Cain is!

She is stylish, intelligent, not afraid to get hers hand dirty - physical combat, poltical macinations and being devious, but unlike so many others has managed to stay relatively sane and take some time to enjoy things - as Walter Hagen said "..............and be sure to smell the flowers along the way." Most importantly she gets the job done.
Perhaps why she is a little less likely to throw in with Chaos than so very many of her compatrriots do - she values what she is defending even if occassionaly the strain shows.
Love to know more about her life outside her encounters with Cain

For now I'll say Commander Farsight.
He's like the Tau's very own Ender WIggin in many ways.
It amused me to notice that Shadowsun harbors disdain for him fueled by petty jealousy of his titanic legacy, while he views her as a fantastic tactician as well as a valuable and honorable ally. I think her petulant attitude toward him is why she will always live in his shadow. Also, she dislikes him because Aun'va told her to. And Aun'va hates Farsight because he knows too much.
I think I'm going to read all his fluff again from the Farsight supplement. I wish BL would put out Tau novels of such caliber... Or put out Tau novels AT ALL for that matter.

Out of this same vein, Ku'Gath Plaguefather is another daemon with a good back story. He was Nurgle's favorite nurgling who fell in the cauldron and drank it all up, and while Nurgle thought it was funny, Ku'gath was so upset that he dedicated his immortality to replicating the brew he imbibed.
A couple more daemonic honorable mentions must include the Changeling for 1) not knowing what he looks like anymore and 2) for spending a lifetime on a plan just to corrupt a single Grey Knight. Winning with Entanglement. Skulltaker's lore is funny. When he was born, he decapitated the first thing he saw. And Skaarbrand who boldly took a swing at Khorne himself and got thrown across everything for 8 days. Or how about Khornes pet-Fluffy Karanak for taking down a Dark Eldar Raider, it's compliment and the Dark Eldar world they landed on when the fools thought they had taken a prize.
One finally note about Kairos; he wasn't the turkey who wandered down the well. Tzeentch really wanted to know what was in the Well of Eternity but wasn't sure that he would survive going in himself, so he threw his top Lord of Change in instead and out came Kairos. Interestingly enough Kairos came back with all the knowledge of the Well. One head knows the future and the other the past, but neither can reckon the present. .
There are actually a lot of epic things the daemons do that go unappreciated and unnoticed.

I actually really like Ku'Gath simply because their is something eerily human about his backstory and character. He's just a son trying to fix what he views as a mess he created, and it is unfortunate that this means bad things for the galaxy at large.
