Boohoo. I'm really not sure why we should care or why this is newsworthy.

I watched the BoW report on the UK Games Day with total amazement, it was a terrible, awful thing that anyone who paid for a ticket should be righteously furious about. Not a single game played, painting tournament shoved away downstairs, so you paid to travel across the country to stand in queues and buy things you could have just ordered online from the comfort of your own home... The only plus I could see was the chance to meet some of the authors. Other than that, a total farce.

I have to agree with this. The comparison between Games Day and something like Adepticon, which BoW also reported from, was especially stark. With Salute, even more so.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

And their recording equipment wasn't impounded at those functions either...

That really blew my mind.

For what it's worth, I still celebrate my birthdays. My life's joyless enough, having an excuse to pretend to be happy just for one day is not to be missed.

Truer words have never been spoken.

I would suspect this was a "we'd like to do our job and make a good show" and GW would like to make a cheap show and sell a ton of stuff (oh and make people buy tickets for the privilege) that to me would be a likely point of conflict and a possible lack of enthusiasm on these guys parts.
But really, we'll have to see next year what happens in these countries, In other companies i would say this may have been a sneak way to lower the salaries of these positions, which i have seen a lot of pre-sell, but i doubt these guys were well paid in the first place really. the whole thing is suspicious but i have come to expect the worst of GW these days so it clouds my judgement,

Also in the modern world of eroded labor laws in most of the western hemisphere, "position elimination" is how a company terminates a salary on their books they don't want to have anymore to reduce fixed costs.

By proxy, it's also an almost nigh un-fightable way to get rid of an employee for just about any reason that may not actually be legal.

I have worked at places where they "eliminate a position due to budget reasons", only to reinstate the position two weeks later, and oddly, had a new hire ready and raring to go the very day the position was reinstated. Funny that, eh ? There is no law (at least here in the US), that prevents the from doing exactly this, and then hiring someone new to fill it. It's the equivalent of an HR legal shell game, and it should be illegal, but good luck finding a legislative body that will enact and protect labor laws that will protect the worker rather than the corporation.

At least in the states if your position is "eliminated", it's basically an automatic approval of your unemployment claim.

Urgh, can't stand the term Western Hemisphere. Like there's a West Pole? Like at some point while I'm heading west I'll stop heading west and start heading east? Besides which, wouldn't Europe be in the eastern hemisphere anyway? And, no, in the EU it isn't possible to make a position redundant only to reintroduce it a few weeks later, and it isn't a quick and easy means of firing someone for no reason. From what I've heard, US employment law is borderline non-existent.

Yeah, Beasts of War had their recording equipment taken off them by security at the GW Games Day. Despite everyone else there filming on cameraphones and so on, including many who post youtube and other podcast type broadcasts, only BoW were targeted like that.

They were only allowed to remain on the premises on condition of handing over their stuff which was returned to them on the way out.

Which country will be next?

What's left?
UK, US and Germany?

I'd guess that means Germany is next since that is entirely in line with GWs retreat from non English markets, then US since the colonies are less important and UK GD will continue along no matter what because, like white dwarf, it's always been and should be run even at a loss. At least until GW decided to change that line of thought in 3 years when they are desperate to cut every last expense

US? They got rid of anyone running events here a couple of years ago. That's why games day got tossed down to memphis, so they could just run it with whoever they have there. GW does not run any events in the US except for the games day.
