Pick a warboss or big mek hq and you have a 500 point game with change for roughly 200$ before supplies to paint. Buy a seperate trukk later and you could have a three trukk list with two small groups of bikes for 750 in short order.
A good suggestions. Buy from a discounter (we use our local store, Dark Sphere) and these are a pretty good deal. We sold our trucks on eBay and bought battlewagons. Add a couple of birthday presents here and there, and you have an army that is hard to fit into 1500 points.
POint to note: if you do good photos, you can sell a wartrukk on sprues on eBay for a good sum, we got £12, which means we only paid £36 for 20 ork boyz and three bikes.
WE also bought AOBR orks, that are around £5 for 10, and either scratch-built shoots, or bought them off eBay. We used gixen, and sniped them for $5 for 10, it bumps up the cost but they're much quicker to convert.
Our ork warboss was $4.50 from hoardobits, and we swapped a few deffkoptas. So this fella cost us £3. (Ok, plus at least five days' work!)

O.O
Are you sure you didn't put the decimal point in the wrong place somewhere in there?
Twelve thousand points of models for three hundred dollars?
I just picked up almost a thousand points of Grey Knights for $30 American, so I wouldn't be horrendously shocked.
I AM horrendously shocked! It's like finding an item that normally costs 100 on sale for 8! (assuming a 2000 point army costs 600 dollars new, which I don't know about anymore)
I buy all my models new, often straight from GW themselves.
He said he bought it off a Magic player. Once their addiction gets a good hold on them, CCG players and drug addicts will do anything to score their next fix, even selling off their belongings for a fraction of their true value.

This is pretty ridiculous, but with addicts you never know.

Orks are good and bad for a few reasons. The good is that the core of the army is usually pretty cheap via ebay. Buying Trukks, boyz, battlewagons, warbosses etc should be pretty simple. The downside is that you need a lot of them to make an army that is playable. 500 points is a good starting point.
I think it's better to start with smaller chunks to make sure that you really are in to the army. I fyou buy $600 of Orks and realize 2 months in that you really wanted to play Space Marines, or wanted to quit entirely, you have spent more than you needed to and are scrounging to sell of the remainder etc.
Starter sets are always a good way to get some practice building, painting, and playing. Also, if you have a friend who wants to play Space Marines, the Assault on Black Reach set is great, as you can get them cheap and split the set with him/her or just buy the Orks on their own.
A trick I do is to troll ebay when I am bout 50% done with whatever project I am working on. This way you can be working o something while waiting to find a deal or waiting for your new models to arrive etc. It keeps costs down and projects flowing to keep you motivated

Normal 40k starts at 1000-1500 points, and many people want to play at 1750-2000. So really you're talking about $500+ just for the models if you want to do more than look at the shiny stuff on your display shelf.
Seems decent.
