I been wondering how much does it start to build a ork army. First of all, all I have is the ork codex. How much money to get all the materials and a 500 point army

That depends on the type of army you're collecting/what models you'll buy.

Step 1 - build an army list from your codex for 500 pts
Step 2 - go to the GW website (or wherever you buy from) and click on "Add to Cart" next to each unit you've included in your army
Step 3 - Add glue, brushes, and paints to your cart.
Step 4 - proceed to checkout - you'll notice the total cost of your cart somewhere on the page

......... there is no way for us to know how much it will cost as we don't know how many vehicles/squads are in your army, what supplies you have/don't have, any discounts that are available from where you purchase the minis..... etc.

he did say orks >.>

but getting straight from GW with no discount retailers or ebaying used stuff (or getting AOBR stuff)

This is the list:

Big mek - KFF - 85

lootas - 5 man - 75

ork boyz - 20 man, shootas, 2x heavy shootas, nob (PK, BP) - 170

ork boyz - 20 man, shootas, 2x heavy shootas, nob (PK, BP) - 170

500/500

that'd be $199 canadian, no taxes or discounts

I have half a mind to kill you, and the other half agrees

I should note that there a quite a lot of alternate irks that are cheaper than GW models.

With imperial guard it seems like what ever the list point cost is divide that point cost in half and that's how many $ you will be expected to pay to have a competitive list at that point level. .

500 points of orks plus paints and the rest of the hobby stuff would probably be about $200. Go on ebay for your ork boys, you can get 40 or 50 choppa boys for 50 bucks if you shop smart. Generic warbosses from AoBR you can land for $10 or so on some days. Mix in some lootas and whatever else you want with the remaining cash and you'll be good to go. If you plan on going to a store and playing I suggest dropping a few bucks there to help the business stay open. Oh and get some green dice, the Waaagh is strong in them.

The answer is how much you wind up spending on ebay.

I'd buy a battleforce because it's good and gets you a ton of bitz, and for the rest, I'd just go to ebay and wait for a good deal on some ork stuff to show up.

I'm sure there are still people looking to offload AoBR stuff for super cheap.

Orks? Troll ebay my friend, troll ebay. Orks are unfavored right now because they are purely a "fun" army atm. They arent unplayable but in a competitive environment they are HARD to use. Long as i dont get tabled in 2 turns, i still have fun playing orks thats how awesome they are.

Orks are probably more expensive than other races if you buy straight from GW because their tactics are spam or dont use at all, and their models are only slightly cheaper. At 500pts you wouldnt bring them but i'll use it as an example anyway: battlewagons. You dont bring 1, you bring 3-4 or none at all. Theyre 66USD each lol. Meanwhile a single landraider thats ~75USD iirc is slightly more expensive, but actually able to do its job alone.

I bought maybe 200 from GW before i realized this. Trolling ebay i found dozens of whole armies for dirt cheap and even new in box factory sealed for dirt cheap. Hell im still opening boxes i got from a huge deal almost 8 months ago lol (1250USD worth of orks, i paid 750USD )

Depending on the bargains you find, you could pay a pretty cheap price compared to other races. I think orks are the only ones right now that can do this, as the other races are either marines or are actually pretty strong anyway.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

The reason it's called "Warhammer 40,000" is because you'll have spent $40K by the time you're done.

Damn back when I started you could get a 1500 point army for $250 from GW to do 2500 hundred points of eldar from GW now cost me $1100 and that's with a 10% and other half the time a 20% discount for buying over $200 at my local store

Also a heads up if you are capping yourself at money being spent on this hobby it won't work at 500 points of stuff is minimal you are on average going to want to play 1500 to 2000 point games and you will want to have 3000 points worth of stuff to make different combinations of lists.

Then eventually you will want a second army and more points!

It very much depends on how you buy your models.

I always buy used.

I found a Magic player desperate for money when a new set came out and got 12000ish points of tyranids and (thousands of) bits for $300.

But I also bought an entire 2000pt GK army for $300.

Buying up Eldar I am quickly realizing how much it sucks to buy new models.

Are you sure you didn't put the decimal point in the wrong place somewhere in there?

Twelve thousand points of models for three hundred dollars?

If you get two of the starter kits you have two trukks, the boyz to get in them and a small squad of warbikers to follow behind the trukks with. Pick a warboss or big mek hq and you have a 500 point game with change for roughly 200$ before supplies to paint. Buy a seperate trukk later and you could have a three trukk list with two small groups of bikes for 750 in short order.

Those amazing deals (I have got several over the YEARS) exist...but they are the exceptions to the rule of what is out there.

Most people on ebay are delusional on they are asking.
Yes, you can get good deals...but this then becomes a time and patience game vs. cost.

If you are exceptionally patient, and a good hunter of deals you can do it...but overall, I would say, if you have to ask how much 40k costs, it might not be the hobby for you.

Again, to all the "but I got X for Y!!!" yes, so did I in the past (I got about $1000 of crons for about $200 back in the early days of 5th) - the points is those deals are the outliers for cost, not the norm.

Shred City.

I don't know why people are giving the bad advice of buying glue and supplies from GW.

Go to a hobby shop and get buttloads of krazy glue and cement glue for fractions of the cost that GW's joke prices/volume (10 dollar bottle half-full yeah no thx) will run you. Also, hit up a craft store for access to excellent packs of brushes ranging from cheap drybrush/workhorse brushes, to fine detail and excellent quality brushes. You can also get knives, clippers, and other equipment way cheaper than Citadel's items. Buy models from GW, but supplies from third party vendors - paint is a personal preference in that regard, you can do the Citadel stuff, or go with other acrylic sources.

I'd just like to point out the fact that the cost to build a 500 point army is deceptively low because very few people are interested in playing a game that small. Normal 40k starts at 1000-1500 points, and many people want to play at 1750-2000. So really you're talking about $500+ just for the models if you want to do more than look at the shiny stuff on your display shelf.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Well, I would guess that he asked for a 500 point army price because that's how they would mainly play it at his LGS or club. My "not very local anymore" club plays 750 point games every week.

You never know. You could be right. Certainly what you said is true...

Most people who have posted here have summed it up pretty well. You'll need at least 30 boyz as a solid core for the army, whether they are shoota or Slugga and Choppa boyz is up to you. Probably best to buy those off eBay - If you can find an old Black Reach set of Orks then you are high flying. Mind you, I'd sell off the Nobz if you take/find that option - they are only armed with Sluggas and Choppas... stupid...

After that, just go on the GW site and see what takes your fancy. That doesn't mean you have to buy from there though...
