While I don't necessarily hate shopping, this is definitely me. Pre-shopping goes like this:

OK, we are going to Infil on route X, hit this Target, our HVTs are 1,2, and 3. From there, we will continue mission down the route to the next target where we will conduct dismounted operations to these locations [points to map] seeking HVTs and Targets of Opportunity. Shopping is an hour long process. Increased to 3 hrs if in a new relationship you want to work out and are willing to sacrifice a bit to make your date happy. Increase again to 4 hrs for holiday shopping. After that, you need to tear up your man-card and follow this guy over the railing. Bonus points if you can splat a Mall-Santa on your way down.

The story is missing the part where he has been dealing with depression his entire life and came from an abusive family.

Clearly he was unstable and it just took an event to trigger these actions.
