My initial reaction to this thread...

Seriously, ask whoever cuts your hair. Also remember to breathe.

What if we cut our own hair? And what do you mean by "remember to breath"?

Go to a barbour and ask them?

If you can't choose a haircut for yourself it's a pretty sad state of affairs and I'd imagine you'd struggle with the most basic/instinctive of tasks.

Yes! I'm not on the list!

Damn! Now I'll be put on the list...

Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Or maybe the OP was just genuinely interested in seeing what his fellow Dakkaites had to say on the subject of haircuts? Just because other don't operate like you doesn't make them incompetent.

Honestly, asking people's opinions on your hairstyle is a good idea. I mean, unless we look like Troy Polamalu, or Fabio, we can't see our own locks. Since I can't see what my head/hair look like, except in a mirror, I ask people who's job it is to see the size/shape of my head, and bring my hair to a place where it all looks good and in balance.

Can't go wrong with a good High and tight.

Actually, yeah you can... .i spend all day on base, and let me tell you, there are some guys with high and tights that should get fades... the high and tight is a terrible, horrible haircut that should be put in the same pile as the Mullet for "men's hair styles that take a special look and attitude to pull off"

+1 to this.

I remember back when I was in military school that there a lot of people that just do not look good with it no matter what.

I'm one of them

Fade just looks a lot more even and "normal" for a lack of better word. I can let mine grow out for months if I feel like it and it will still look decent, whereas if I had let a high and tight grow out it just looks even more weird.

No, that's not me. However, my hair is cut exactly like that (ever-so-slightly shorter on top, though).

Ha! Don't give too many thanks just yet; that picture is so close it's spooky. My nose, chin & ears are just a little pointier and my jaw is more angular, but otherwise this dude is a dead ringer. That's why I've got the image; someone thought it was me.

Anyway, to the OP: never ask a woman what kind of haircut you should get, and never, ever let a woman actually cut your hair. You will regret it pretty close to 100% of the time, because they will always be inspired by whatever pop star they find dreamy at the time.

Find a barber; the older the better. Ask for a pompadour with a low fade. If the barber immediately understands what that is and compliments your decision to get your hair cut like a man, then you know you have found the right barber, and you should let him know that he will be your barber until he retires or one of you is dead.

Yeah, it's what Tim said. I can choose my hair cut just find, but it's called asking for an opinion. I've heard a lot of good suggestions here, but being a D-bag is pretty uncalled for.

I also routinely get my hair cut by one of the ladies in the shop I go to. All are married, and one particular favorite is on the older side as well. Because they make their money from you, if they are any good they'll listen to you. Of course, if you go in and say, "I want the latest male pop star's hair style" then yeah, that's what you'll get.

That haircut really only works for guys with black or dark brown hair though.

If a redhead like me got it I would just look like a really bad Conan O'Brian impersonator.

Unfortunately a lot of haircuts look really stupid on redheads for some reason. Hence why I keep it simple. Every girl I've dated though has tried to convince me to put gel in it and try something "modern" like a lot of guys wear now. I'll go back to the mullet before I take hair inspiration from the likes of One Direction or Beiber.

I had a military cut while, well, I was in the military.

An option is to let it grow (while you wait, an option is to wet it and put a baseball cap on your way wherever you go early morning, when dry it'll hold the shape to a degree), when long enough it'll look good. If you don't want it messing with your vision or want to look less unformal, go the ponytail or half ponytail way (lately I've been doing the half one)

I cut my own hair, with varying results, it currently looks a little like Azazel the Male Model's but not as long and combed to the side rather than a faux hawk thing(and due to my hairs natural waviness a bit scruffier).

The one issue with doing your own hair is that if you aren't just buzzing it short (which can look fine btw) not having access to those thinning shear things really effects the lifetime of the hair cut. I am not that fussed about my appearance most of the time but if i wanted to look decent all the time i'd probably have to do it every 4 weeks or so.

If you just buzz it short (remember to leave it slightly longer on the top than the sides, i'd also recommend making the back base of the skull bit of hair even shorter than the sides. Choosing a uniform length will grow out looking uneven and unusual). That cut can last a few months.

Hairdressers are fairly used to clients bringing in pictures and working to that 'Specification' so i recommend doing that. Although this has traditionally been something women have done more and more style-savvy men have started doing it. If you want to make it easy, even the manliest barbershops will have a couple pictures of haircuts on the premises, pick one and add a few caveats if certain elements of it aren't to your liking. 'Like that one but longer on top', 'Like that one but leave my sideburns, i'll trim them at home' etc etc.

Do you have to use gel or grease with that style cause I don't like using product in my hair and I'm considering trying that style next time a get a haircut.

Personally I'd rather have a haircut women of my generation find attractive, than one men of my grandfather's generation find proper. I mean sadly my hair is incapable of either either but if possible that's what I'd choose.

It will not look like that out of the shower. You have to style it, and sleep on it, and the next day it will look like that. And you have to use a wax or pomade; gel won't really work too well (too stiff, and makes gross flakes).
