When I have proxied in the past, I do try and use like for like... so a flamer can stand in for a Melta. But, I won't use a Missile Launcher marine as a pistol and CCW sgt, for example.

This guy's kinda right... People really get upset about proxies in a plastic army man game. That's slowed.

Really a proportionate response there, indicative of a mature adult.

Had my fourth proxy use of a particular model this weekend, and have to say, in four games it was enough for me to decide to make one.
Some of the games my friends and I play in are just fine with proxies - we do ask that the player try and get the stand-in to be as close as reasonably possible to the final model.
Occasionally, we will have games with "painted models only" and while I don't prefer those (some players are very slow painters) I do have to admit - they can look very cool - and on a board of well made terrain really enhance the experience of the game.
For example, in our big game this weekend (24,000 points) I was in a big mix up with two other players on my end of the table (it was painful!!!). At one point, all of the models on that end of the table were all painted - and it looked really really cool.
Likewise, in another view, there were a stream of EIGHT painted flyers all flying in a big formation crossing the board.
Again, this was a very cool scene - and added a lot to the game.
On the "respect' issue...a lot of my friends try to make their models look good - so now that I am fairly certain I will get the model I was proxying - I am going to make sure I build it and paint it to a good standard.
To do other wise is like buying a wedding present from the dollar store - its just inconsiderate and immature.
Edit: removed the comments feeding the trolls....

Using a random model/object (not scratch build or conversion) to represent the model on the board.

Absolutely fine with me , and I wouldn't set a time limit on someone to get the real model.
I hate the Heldrake model and refuse to buy it, using a FW Hell Talon instead, or if I want to take more than one I use my Deldar flyers as well. Why should I have to spend money on the 'right' model just to make someone else happier? 90% of my army is wysiwyg but I'm not going to spend £8 on one Sisters heavy flamer model when I have a heavy bolter proxy.
Also, my CSM army was wysiwyg but then the codex changed. So I should have to spend hundreds of pounds to get models that I don't really like just to please someone else? Or gimp my army by not including the most effective units?
Finally, I have a job where I get up at 5 and get home at 7 or later and run 4 times a week so have 0 hobby time on weekdays. My wife also likes to spend time with me on weekends - while she is understanding (Sunday is usually hobby day) my career and family trump Warhammer every time. So no, my armies aren't fully painted (they will be as I love painting - maybe in a few years )

I provide my opponent a written list saying what is what and the proxy unit is described in the list. (They guy with the painted shoulder has a plasma rifle, but it counts as a flamer)
Least amount of ambiguity possible if I am proxying .
You're from youngstown? The hooooood! I went to YSU back in the day!
Represent! Lol
But I am in the same boat as others who mentioned time and amount of disposable income when it comes to proxying. GW is not a cheap hobby where someone can go buy additional units to accurately represent the load out they want to try for a few games. In certain situations, I can see how some folks may raise an eyebrow with proxying, but it should never be a reason to refuse a casual game.

Would that include in the term, say an entire squad made up of models 80 to 100 per cent Scibor Miniatures or would that be a conversion? You see, I've got an army of Space Marines where only half of the arms and the Drop Pods are from GW and I'm a bit curious whether or not people would consider it conversion or proxy.

This is a report-worthy post. i have not reported it though. just a thought that Rule #1 of the site might be worth a revisit for you. My own army is painted to a very high degree (i win regional competitions) and in the region's gaming community, I do get respect from other players for it. just as i respect the abilities of other payers who paint thier armies to the same standard. I only weigh a mere 250 lb (not bad for being 6'11" and I have been married and am VERY rarely without female companionship.
Many others here may take personal offence to remarks like that..
When do i feel you should stop proxying? when you can either
A. afford to buy the model, go out and get it
or
B. be able to find parts and items that would allow you to build or convert a reasonable replica of the model. Smetimes, you can be very creative and come up with conversions that earn you a lot of kudos from your local gaming commnity.
Edit : I dont mind "counts as" using models from other ranges so long as they represent the model fairly well. often counts as can save you a lot of money and so long as it is consistant and reasonable, few will complain about it.
