The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

When Lorgar saw the painting that trapped Fulgrim, he was mad at first, but then broke into laughter and told the daemon that was currently possessing Fulgrim's body that it's time was limited. The daemon had no clue what Lorgor found so funny.
Odds are pretty good the real Fulgrim, trapped in the painting, basically told Lorgar, "It's alright bro. I have this handled."
So I'm pretty sure the Fulgrim in Reflection Cracked is the real Fulgrim and he did successfully exorcize the daemon. Though I hear there are some time-line contradictions possibly, here (wouldn't be the first time they accidentally messed that up in the Horus Heresy, though)

For a guy who wasn't very emotional even by Primarch standards, he sure lost his head over Fulgrim's betrayal.

I really hate how Ferrus died. Especially since Fulgrim wasn't that bothered about the Daemon within him afterall.
Still think they should have killed more Primarchs off, but obviously that would result in fluff complications.
A great twist would be them revealing the disappeared Primarchs as actually slain. Lorgar is actually dead, it is just a lie that he dwells in solitude. Russ is dead, Corax is dead etc etc.

Rogal dorn came out the worst. He failed to save the Emperor than almoat started another civil war than was force to give up his point of view (which i think is probably the worst) and break up the legion and than got in a sige that butchered hes man and finally getting blown up with only your hand remaining. I think Leman Russ came out pretty well his legion didn't change much and then goes off on a quest that hes idea of a good time I think.

Best : Roboute : His methods are the dominant doctrine the Astartes use, also, Ultramar is pretty nice in comparison to the rest of the imperium.
Worst : Horus : He was completely obliterated body and soul.

He proved he was right: the gods were real. He did what he thought it should be done and changed the fate of the galaxy.
Then he retired to do what he likes to do: write books. He didn´t care at all about commanding the Legion or being a leader. That´s what Erebus and Kor Phaeron are for. He wanted to be a writer. He wants to be a spiritual leader, of course, but he is not fond of giving sermons, he is mostly into writing stuff and let others do the job.
And both his previous books, "Lectitio Divinitatus" and "The Book of Lorgar" became massive best-sellers, read, discussed and appreciated by countless billions. Which is a massive hard-on for any writer.
And before the Heresy, he was trapped in a job he didn´t want, and looked down by his opinions.
I like to think that after his actions actually turned the Emperor into what he believed him to be, a God, he's been kicking himself ever since

Even if that's the case (which I doubt, since it's stated that the planet was designed by Fulgrim, not by Slaanesh, albeit in Slaanesh's name and dedicated to Slaanesh, obviously), I imagine Fulgrim LIKES it that way. He certainly did in Reflection Crack'd from what I heard.
