Also worth mentioning, My Tau army (which i've loved since 08 but could only play last year) is actually called sept "O'taku" and they are all painted like gundams. i do have a single riptide, not because i want to win everything but because i jsut love the look of it, i have a thing for gatling guns.

Thank. You. I think the riptide is awesome but I hate the meta and have been putting off getting one simply because of said meta. Personally I do the same thing with the narrative based games and love to see players who aren't just spamming the latest power model, And to the OP... *Ahem* MOAR BOYZ! STOMP DOSE GITZ AND THEIR "RIPTEARS" WAAGH! (Sorry about that, could resist)

Well, I like to consider my mono-Tzeentch list to be pretty non-meta compliant;

LoC w/Lesser Reward (Staff of Change), 2x Greater Gifts, Lv3 on Div.

Tzherald w/2x Lesser Rewards, Exalted Locus, Lv3 w/1x Tzeentch + 2x Div.
18 Pinkies w/Iridescent Horror + 2x Lesser Rewards, Standard w/Banner of Change, Muso.

Tzherald w/Mutating Warpblade, Lesser Gift, Greater Locus of Change, Lv3 w/1x Tzeentch + 2x Div.
18 Pinkies w/Iridescent Horror + Etherblade, Standard, Muso.

Tzherald w/Disc, Mutating Warpblade, Lesser Gift, Lv2 on Div.
9x Screamers

9x Flamers

2x Firewyrms of Tzeentch ('counts as' Beasts of Nurgle - imagine an Exalted Flamer and a Spawn hook up and have a mutated kid...)

3x Changebringers of Tzeentch ('counts as' Plaguedrones - or rather, Flamers on Discs)
includes Champ w/Greater Reward.

Soul Grinder of Tzeentch w/Flame thrower upgrade.

No Grimoire... no Flying Circus... ASSULTY! Horrors w/random strength locus! Uses Flamers which "meta wisdom" claim are the ultimate suck because they're not OP filth anymore...
About the only things 'conforming' at all would be using lots of Divination and Screamers.

I have a lot of fun with this though and building beyond it. Sometimes I'll add CSM allies in the form of 1k Sons + a unit of Fallen Angels to poke fun at my buddy who's a die-hard DA player. Or else I'll just add more Flamers, (I like Flamers a lot... maybe too much), and another pair of Firewyrms and even a Chariot Tzherald, despite how god-awful my luck is with him!

My favourite 'meta-buster' to throw into my list is the odd time I bring my Prince who carries The Doomstone... It's literally the perfect hard-counter to Jetseerstar as it nukes the Ld of those Ld8 Warlocks and leaves the unit missing a good deal of its augments. Hilarity ensues when that Cheesedar player suddenly finds themselves taking a "pass a Ld check or suffer -D6 Ld for the rest of the game" for each model in their Deathstar!

And best of all, most opponents are left picking themselves up off the floor once they realise there's a Daemon army with no Grimoire... Confuses the living hell out of hyper-competitive "meta-heads" as I call them.

My "fluff" is variety.
I like to have as many different models as possible.
It helps also that they are fully painted as well:

SM: BT
HQ: Fully tooled Captain riding with a 15man crusader squad in a LR:CR: nothing says Templar like large squads with a Crusader tank.

Elite:
Sternguard in Drop Pod.

Fast Attack:
Bike squad with grav guns and AB:MM
3 attack bikes HB.
3 X skimmers with two MM on them (Deepstrike).

Troops:
10 man squads in drop pods usually with PG and MM.
10 man squads in Rhinos with PG and ML. May Combat squad or 5 man crusader squad with same loadout.
1 scout squad with snipers and HB.

Hvy:
Predator AC and Hb sponsons.
Whirlwind (Or swap him out for Thunderfire Cannon)
Vindicator with SB.

No spam and pretty true to how SM work.

Sticking with your Ork's why not run a blood axe clan that's gone a little tooo imperial? Paint them up in some nice cammo colors, let them ride in looted rhino's for trukks, etc. You can still spam the boys and what not its just how you present it. Maybe take some guard as desperate aliles and an inquisitorial detatchment as well. You could have a list of Blood Axe's serving as guides to a small Rogue Trader/Inquisitorial force far outside of the Astronomican's light.

ORKS!!!! GET EM!!!

tau are still tau - the are absolutely terrible at CC, and their troops are just total cardboard.

The guy who buys all those riptides, kill his scoring units, tie up the riptides. 20 orks should tie up a riptide for the entire game (you don't have to kill a model...you just have to render it ineffective).
He will kill an average of two a turn, at best.

Many people focus on tau (or any army, really) strengths rather than weaknesses.....do that for what ever you fight, play to the mission, and kill them.

Kill them all!!!

Muhahahahahahha

Ahem.

Bring many a SAG. They have the potential for hilarity. Played a game on Monday, mine went to town with killing about 12 marines, 3 terminators, a Rhino and stripping 2 Dreads of their weapons.

Those Dreads got names because of that. One of them lost his fist and became "Shooty", the other lost his gun and became "Punchy". Shooty ended up squishing some boyz in melee and Punchy had a flamer that roasted more than he killed in melee. The irony was too much.

Meta is meta because it's strong and wins games.

You can produce counter-meta armies but probably not with orks.

Str 7 spam was the meta start of last year, because people were still playing 5th ed vehicles lists.

Current top-tier meta of Seer Council and O'Vesa Stars wreck LRs, the only viable build of which is DA LRC spam.

I've always tried to steer clear of the mathematically optimal list. Right now the story is that vehicles stink in 6th, so I'm running vehicle-heavy Clan Raukaan lists. In 5th, assault was pretty good so I ran a 100% shooty vanilla Marines army (bolterspam yay!). In 4th, I used the customizable chapter traits (still miss those, GW!) to create the "anti-assault marines" chapter, by giving everyone True Grit and Counterattack (True Grit made your bolter marines count as having extra close combat attacks, Counterattack gave a unit +1 attack when they were charged at). In 3rd, I played Salamanders (I3, limited fast attack choices, Chaplain Xavier... probably the most underwhelming special character of all time) which were as I understood it one of the least popular armies around at that time, but I made it work with Devastator spam from cover and lots of master crafted weapons.

My favorite part about running "non meta" lists is that other players typically have no idea how to respond when your army doesn't behave like other armies from the same codex that they've faced before. That bewilderment can be used to your advantage.

actually i was going to take a land raider, shop it up a bit, shover ork bits on and inside it, and then call it a battlewagon, while rolling up on SM player (u mad 'umies?) otherwise i was going to run an av 14 slam myself into the enemy and then disgorge so many boyz they drown in em.

This. Also people seem to forget that all those monstrous creatures can simply punch (and some of the death stars) a landraider to make it explode.

Also, for all the people suggesting just flooding the table in models: The times where shooting armies didn't have enough shots to kill your models are over. Between abundant access to twin-linking and ignoring cover, additional shots on all sorts of units and the general inability of close combat troops to cross no-mans land, just putting as many models on the table will not win you a game. Both Eldar and Tau posses the means to blow a green tide off any objective. You could catch CSM and daemons off guard, but probably only once or twice.

As for fluffy lists, I've got an idea for one that exploits the Codex: Inquisition to get all my favorite non-ork models into one "The Emperor is very unhappy with what you're doing here"-style list:

2000 Points:
First primary detachment Black Templars
HQ
- Grand Marshall Hellbrecht

Elite
- 2x Ironclad

Troops
- 2x Crusader Blobs

Allies - Adeptus Sororitas
HQ
- St. Celestine

Troops
- 2x Sisters in Immolator

Heavy Support
- Exorcist

Second Primary Detachment Inquisition
HQ
- Inquisitor Coteaz

Allies - Grey Knights
HQ
- Grandmaster Mordrak
- Ghost Knights

Troops
- Grey Knight Terminators

So you basically have bunch of rampant zealots slaying heretics, exterminating xenos, destroying witches and purging unclean all over the place. It should look pretty awesome on the tabletop, too.

Nobody expects the terran inquisition - especially not all of it at once

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.
