Although, Could it be the cops did nothing because they where powerless to do something? These people are violent, they may not have known. It could have been they where more going to be observe/report

Horse gak. The cops were part of the biker "gang."

Its a shame the bikers didn't bring their faces to a "gun" fight.

The thing is, thats not the way it happened at all, and even if he was at fault (Which every single bike forum I saw it posted on agreed he wasn't) thats why cars have license plates.
The first bike that was hit on the film was brake checking him and got what happens when you brake check someone in an SUV when you are on a sports bike. Physics took over.
I can't believe that even after several bikers, including some cops, have been charged and the driver not charged with anything people are still defending the bikers.
The actual "hit and run" (it's not the "brake check guy") is not on the film though. Nor is "The SUV driver pulled over, and the bikers surrounded his vehicle, hitting it and spiking the tires" part of the video that i saw on that CNN page.
As for the "several bikers, including some cops, have been charged" bit, they chose the wrong way to react when they physically attacked the SUV driver. Those charges are not directly linked to whether the driver did or did not hit and run.
Reference for this please? I can't find anything saying that there was any event before the video starts, other than conjecture. In fact all I can find is the brake checking biker saying he pulled in front of the RR and the driver accelerated. All they ever refer to is the initial incident at the start of the video, and that rider has been charged with reckless riding.

I took it they were off duty cops that were with the group. They should have at least distanced themselves from the gang, preferably ruled over and reported it.

There's a well established precedent that the police have no responsibility to upload the law even when they are on duty. Warren v. District of Columbia, Castle Rock v. Gonzales, etc.

They are not however allowed to violate when they are on duty.

I was basing my argument on the cnn video that starts with the SUV driving over the motorbikes. I watched it without audio and didn't notice the changed sequence of events. Therefore i assumed there had to be an important part prior to the recording where the actual accident ("The New York City Police Department said a man driving a Range Rover with his wife and 2-year-old daughter inside Sunday struck a motorcyclist on Manhattan's West Side Highway, breaking his leg.") happened.
With audio it suddenly makes way more sense and i was wrong all along. My apologies.

Wasn't there also some allegations that the cops that were in the gang actually undercover?? If so, that could explain why they did nothing. Of course, Fraz is still correct, if you actively break the law, on or off duty, you are still responsible for it.

I thought that the way it was phrased was that the police had a duty to uphold the law, but that they didn't have a duty to protect individuals?
From what I remember, the bikers were taking up most of the road, one was slowing and got too close to the SUV behind, possibly bumped him, and that's what sparked the whole thing. Because the biker got shunted, they all stopped and were planning on shouting at the driver, but he panicked, due to their numbers, and drove through them, crushing riders. From that point on, the other riders were chasing him because all they knew/assumed was that this guy just killed some of them. The whole thing was a total mess. This video by a moto vlogger explains it pretty well, stating that both parties made mistakes.
As for this law suit, I guess we will see what happens.

The practical effect of that being you are on your own, police or not.

Well yes. At the end of the day, that is pretty much true.

Not really. The driver made no mistakes. He was doing everything he could to get his family out of a very dangerous situation.
If he needed to run over every single one of them to escape it would have been completely justified.

Agreed. Motovlogger says "If you lock your door, they won't get in" which is shown to be demonstrably false as they used their helmets to smash out the windows and drag the man out of the car.It proved 'getting away' was the only valid escape.

He meant for the first encounter though. By the second time they stopped the driver, they were already intent on beating him up. But the first time they stopped, they weren't going to smash the windows, they weren't in immediate danger, or so we assume. I was thinking that the biker that went up to the car was only going to shout at him and bitch about him driving too close or something, even though the biker was in the wrong for slowing down. The driver escalated the situation by driving over the bikers. But of course, without being there and being the people in the situation and knowing what they were thinking and what their intentions were, we can only speculate.
the guy who brake checked the suv, even passes to get infront of the suv, in the suv's lane...
he was well within the dangerous limit of approach... you dont cut in beside someone that close to the, to the point where you are in their lane, then pull up a foot infront, then slam the brakes, and then complain that an suv couldnt slow down as fast as you...
the biker broke several traffic laws before he was "tapped" and he is the reason he got tapped in the first place... you cannot swarm the road (and in the full vid, lots of these bikers did the same thing where they passed other vehicles close enough to be in the same lane) and drive like its mad max, then complain when someone wasnt able to keep up with your stunting.
