Warrior classes mostly. But like OP, I tend to change my mind halfway trough the game^^

Some examples:
WoW: Warrior
D&D Online: Warrior
Old Republic: Bounty Hunter (melee spec)
Dark Souls: Warrior and Knight
Baldur's Gate Series: Warrior
Mass Effect: Soldier
Fallout: Big Weapons and Heavy Armor

Something tough, preferably with a shotgun in FPS's and necromancers or artificers in fantasy settings for me.

See, GW2 was the one game where I broke my usual routine, and my Mesmer is the only character that I have at lvl 80.... and they are quite fun to play. It seems as though while at lvl 80, all the monsters/bosses have resistances against elemental magic, they have very little to none in the "Mind feth" department... plus, building my illusions, then blowing them up is just fun

I don't even KNOW anymore.

Pet classes, mostly - Warlock (WoW), Necromancer (EQ 1 and 2), Beastlord (EQ), Engineer (Anarchy Online).

I play often Rogues or Warrior types, sometimes Ranger types.

Dark Souls: QUALITY (a dex/str hybrid using 'all round' weapons like Longswords which benefit equally from both stats, so a 'medium' physical build), though I ran Str/Faith Dex/Faith so maybe a paladin like character as well.

Dragons Dogma: Pretty much pure warrior. Might do the other classes on later breakthroughs though.

WoW: Rogue

Skyrim: 2-H melee

It depends, MMOs I prefer casters, usually.

Single player RPGS, usually a warrior the first play through. They are almost always the easiest to get through with. Then After I know the game a bit, I'll play through with some other classes.

Across the Great Divide

I generally play hybrid characters. I prefer the jack of all trades style. In skyrim I will go battlemage/spellsword style.

In ME I played a vanguard and loved every second. That is the best class in my not at all biased opinion. Nothing like zooming across the field and beating down/shotguning opponents faces off.

Never gone to deep into stealth styles but that is for my next go at skyrim.

Forest hunter sept ~3500
guardians of the covenant 4th company ~ 6000
Warrior based hive fleet

HELL. Or just England

It really depends. The only class I really never consider is heavy fighters.

Probably my favourite classes are skirmishers/rouges. So the rouge from dnd, duel wielding fighter in Dragon Age and such other things.

In Sci Fi settings like mass effect I like the sharpshooter roles.

The Red Mist Legion- Renegade Chaos Space Marines
'Show those loyalist dogs that their masters send them to the slaughter!'
Iron Heads - Ork Warband
'Dat one put a dent in my iron hat humie!'
The Red Coats - Necromunda Gang
'A good kill Juve, but not worthy of a Red Coat yet'
The Masked Junkies - Necromunda Gang
'Fully automatic, a steel backed stock and more bullets then I know what to do with! Now thats a real gun.'

I'm very bad at picking a role and sticking with it. On my first Skyrim playthrough I pretty much carried one of every type of weapon (sword, axe, mace, dagger, bow, warhammer, battleaxe, greatsword) and always a suit of armour and a set of robes.By the time I got bored I was about the same level in 1-handed, 2-handed, archery, destruction, conjuration, restoration, heavy and light armour.

I'm being slightly more disciplined in my current run, sticking to light armour, 1-handed, sneak, archery and destruction. The thing is, I tend focus on new skills in the same game rather than restarting and doing everything again.

I normally start with Magic user class thing. And then if I enjoy it enough then I play through it again as an In-your-face brawler. For the major exception has been online games. I'm a Champion in LotRO and In League of Legends I like Melee Champions over Mage Champions

I'd say that it really varies on the game itself.
for instance in terms of D2 i mainly play Druid/Necromancer well because i like the fluff/back ground thing for them if you could call it that.

In path of Exile i'm playing a duelist at the moment but i might also go for a Shadow and a Ranger down the road, and in Space marine i play Devastator/Havoc or tactical.

those are just some few examples of the classes i play though, i could of course make a full list of all the classes for the various games that i play but i'm being rather lazy and also want to save DakkaDakka from yet another boring list lol.

Oh right.

I play a Warrior and a Necromancer in GW2. Necromancer is a debuffer, not a petmaster. Warrior is a ranged attacker primarily, using a rifle.

In TF2 I played spy almost exclusively.

In World of Tanks I focus mostly on tank destroyers and mediums.

In Tribes: Ascend I play Raiders and Infiltrators.

RPG's
Rogues. Whether its the Ranger variant with sword and bow, or the more traditional assassin with daggers. Any magic I use tends to be stealth related Illusion magic, like the Invisibility spell in Skyrim.

Battlefield 3/4
Support Class. Light machineguns, shotguns, or carbines, with C4 for anti-tech and building demolition or Claymores when defending an area, and ammo boxes for supplying team mates. Though I frequently switch class depending on what my team needs at the time.

Mass Effect
Vanguard Class. Shotguns, SMGs and biotic powers for a high risk bezerker playstyle.

Skyrim
Archery, Illusion, Sneak, Security, Pickpocketing, One Handed, Enchanting, Smithing, Light Armour.

Dragon Age Origins
My current character is a Rogue, with Assassin and Shadow specialisations. My original character was a Rogue Bard/Ranger focusing on Archery, but the DPS was awful.

I'm doing another ME2 run, as an infiltrator, seems to work quite well for me, tactical cloak's damage buff and invisibility means I get a chance to poke my head out of cover and (usually) get a guaranteed kill - I do miss the assault rifle though, I usually played as a soldier, focussing on shooting the enemy, and letting my team use the fancy powers...

Almost universally magic users in rpg's and fantasy setting's. So Wizard in all the Diablo games, Fire mage in Skyrim (although he is handy with a bow too...) and Mage in Torchlight. Hell, my go to character in Hearthstone is the Mage or Shaman.

Conversely, in fps games I usually plump for the dual wielding, pistol crazed, nutjob.... run and gun, all up in your face.

I love pet classes. Other than that I play a bit of everything; whatever I like most given the specific mechanics used by the game.

In MMOs I generally prefer ranged dps of some kind, but I will tank sometimes. Never much cared for healing, except the Chloromancer in Rift.

Loved my Ranger in GW2 - built him for Condition Damage and area control, lots of snares and stuff for pvp, and as soon as someone tried to run away i'd pop my haste and stack a ridiculous number of bleeds on them. Although my favorite was having the half fall damage thingy and leaping off a cliff to escape superior enemy forces - they'd see me at the bottom with 1/3 health, jump off to follow me and die.

Summoner types in RPG, I like the minions doing my bidding. Had a Lock in WoW, Loremaster in LOTRO, Sorceress in TERA. Also I like stealth characters.

Rifleman in shooters. Day of Defeat spoiled me in this regard.
