I think my enthusiasm for assault cannons comes from the availability on a wide variety of units and the fact that it's a good all round weapon that can threaten any unit, not necessarily destroy outright

I like the high rate of fire from grav cannons and rifles, and I just love the grav amps. I always need help to re-roll to wound rolls.

Just wanted to point out that this game has a gun that allows no cover or armor saves,
automatically hits and causes Instant Death on rolls of six.

That sounds either stupidly expensive in points, a one off weapon, hard to use properly or just plain silly. I like the sound of a vulcan mega bolter but if I were allowed to spam them out I don't think I could bring myself to.

To change up the thread a little, what's your favourite weapon, not necessarily the most powerful? Or least favourite? Personally I can't stand grav weapons. Just made up out of nothing because I suppose space marines need something to wipe out riptides and wraithlords and so forth. Cannot stand them.

But might take a single grav gun just in case.

Favourite weapon: Flamestorm cannon. Not anywhere near the top of the list of effectiveness mind..

Meltaguns are the best.

The only thing that gets almost on par with them for me is the aforementioned demo charge and plasma pistols (because nothing says 'back the frak off' like a sidearm that melts through Terminator armor).

Anyway, least favorite weapon? I suppose weapon doesn't have to equal gun. My least favorite is the Honor Blade...because it's equipped on Aun`Shi who is always sitting there in my special character section with a giant troll face whispering "come on, spend the points on me. You know you want to kill stuff in close combat with Tau. You can do it... just give me a devilfish and a squad of fire warriors...I can make them Stubborn..."

Well, in terms of actual best weapons that'll easily go to an apoc one, so bleh to that. In terms of my favourite weapons in game, it has to be the punisher cannon. It's not particularly useful for anything other than hordes (and seriously, who needs help killing hordes with IG?), but man is it cool as heck. In terms of weapons that deserve better, I'd have to say the humble flamer. Neither it nor the heavy flamer are ever taken seriously really, as they're so weak and far too much for maybe occasionally hitting an enemy once in a blue moon (barring deep strikers, but even then I don't see them much) but it's just such an awesome weapon. It's pretty ridiculous IMO that most stuff gets saves from a flamer - because, ya know, fire warriors and eldar almost-anythings are definitely mostly fireproof - but I guess that's more the fault of the AP system rather than anything else.

As for least favourite, again barring Str D which should just jump in a hole and disappear, I'm going to go with the Heavy Venom Cannon. It's an anti-tank weapon which is a blast at Str 9. Well, except it's AP4 and can only be bought by MCs. So, you fire a blast which is unlikely to do much to infantry (wounds on 2+, usually get armour save, small blast doesn't really cover more than a model or two at once) or at a tank which may, if you're lucky, chip off one hull point. All this for the cost of a lascannon, which is also overpriced and on only MCs which have an option for 6 Str 6 TL shots for 5 points less. It's the only gun I can think of which has been in the game for 4+ editions which has never once been good.

Blaster, simply because it has the best name of any gun in the game. You keep your trans-dimension beamers, ion accelerator and plasma annihilators, I want a good old blaster. Nice, simply, available en-mass, cheap, can put a hole through a land raider as easy as a Falcon and instant deaths T4 characters. Add them to a 5 man unit in a double cannon venom and now they can handle ANYTHING for a 125pt unit, not bad son, not bad.

Most up to date rules for the Vulture are in IA3SE, where it does not state that they are available to a Codex: Imperial Guard army as any choice, so no - standard Guard and DKoK can't take Vultures.

I used to like Salamander tactical squads with two flamers or a meltagun/flamer combo. But now... two five man tactical squad stood near each other. And a combi-flamer in each. Good times.

Also I like that assault squads can have two flamers. Seems like a waste on bikes though.

Love the warbikers dakkaguns. Short ranged, brutal firepower that actually takes skill to use - yeah bro best weapon in the game for sure

If by best you mean strongest then that thing the revenant titan gets is stupidly overpowered. Fun stuff.

Not sure of who was this addressed to. But in case in was for me, I'll give my answer now.
D-Scythes are a 10ppm uprgade for Wraithguard, so not too expensive for a T6 platform, but the whole squad must take it so it gets expensive real quickly.
The obvious drawback is the short range as it's a template weapon

For marines Plasma/Meltaguns are always proper, but my favourite gun just might be Hot-shot Lasgun.

And I don't even play IG.

Grav cannon with grav amp, oh lordy that things good.

Another vote for Hot shot (Hellgun, cheers) here.

As far as dealing with Drakes goes, here's a nifty trick for you: don't take shots at the front or side of it unless you have the TLLC equipped. Instead, manoeuvre to the rear and shoot it up the ass with the asscannon, even if that means missing out on shooting the Skyhammers/Typhoons. I say this because your chances of Exploding it or destroying the Baleflamer are better that way.

To me, it's the Blastmaster. Not necessarily the best in the entire game, but easily the most useful fancy piece of wargear in my army. Wanna kill a blob of 'Gants? Drop the bass. Wanna kill a Tactical Squad? Drop the bass. Wanna take out a wound from that MC? Drop the bass. Wanna shake up that vehicle?

Drop the bass.

Just remembered - haywire staff on a stormtek! Now THAT is my favourite! 25pts for a weapon that can gut almost any vehicle and due to scythes or a veiltek can be dropped almost anywhere. Boo-ya!

The humble pulse rifle is certainly my pick for 'best.'

The flamer is an easy choice for 'favorite.'

Close. Combat. Weapon.

I second the Pulse Rifle selection for favourite. Ion Accelerator for best. It's hard to beat 72" range, S8, AP2, Large Blast on a tough as nails platform that can be there and gone by the time you figure out which way is up again.

I'll cheat now since this is a Ordnance weapon, but I must say the Demolisher Cannon. It has made my humble Vindicator the terror of our local meta. Everything I point it at just dies. Last game it took down three Killa Kans, a Deff Dread, sniped a Big Mek with a Shokk Attack Gun from the ruin he was hiding in and created a 24" bubble of do-not-want for the enemy.

It is so blunt and strong so it's hilarious, a S10 AP2 Large Blast that rolls 2 D6 and chooses the highest against vehicles!

I looove firing it. I can imagine the bommmm it makes as things just fall apart before it.

In comparison, the LR Demolisher just feels... Impure.
