#30k been doing this stuff in 40k forever. IT appeals to those players that love the lore and want armies that support characters they have read about. One of my biggest frustrations is why they haven't brought back NAgash

Because his power level would be obscene. While they could scale him down, it wouldn't feel right. Same with why they haven't put back in the first vampires - Neferata, Abhorash, etc. They'd just be ridiculously powerful, and people already complain about Vampire Lords as it is.

For the same reason that Eldrad is still a character for the Eldar.

The fact that a character is 'dead' in the lore does not necessarily mean that they should be removed. The reason for that is so that you're not stuck playing "right now, and only right now" in terms of the timeframe of the setting. You get to have the option of playing historical campaigns or right here and right now.

Plus it allows for you to have a "template" for you to work from for a unique special character of your own.

I think Eldred got retconned back into existence.

GW made it so the 40k setting takes place just before he is killed in the 13thBC

Correct me if I'm wrong but arn't Chaos Demons simply manifestations of mortal emotions? Therefore if suddenly every mortal was thrown into the sun they would cease to exist as their would be no emotions to feed upon. This is all going by the assumption that the Warhammer world doesn't exist in the 40k Eye of Terror or anything like that.
