I remember looking at the poster for this flick...

And thinking, "Why are they trying to make it look like a war movie?"

I cannot ! I cannot try this song, because, well, I have already bought this album and I already know this song by heart. Sorry.
Does not make Horde's lyrics any less hilarious, or the music any worse.

Also you got nothing that beat that voice, nothing :

Granted, Lou Reed was Jewish, and this song probably has more to do with grasping for some form of benevolent higher power while having to deal with something so suffocating as a heroin addiction, but it's still a damn good Christian-ish song.

I think it's due to movies always trying to portray him as something beyond being a man. It's hard to connect to a person that is perfect and all knowing or all compassionate, which is typically where those movies fail.

The entire point of Jesus is that he was human like the rest of us and had all the same emotions successes and failures that we all experience. Dramatic and engaging story telling always requires potential for the protagonist to fail or die etc. The way most Christian movies are portrayed they don't account for those options so the stories feel weak or forced as there is no connection between the character and the audience.

As a human he would have had moments of doubt, weakness and insecurities, but that's not something most directors are willing to address and because of that he always comes off as a flat infallible character. The audience can't really connect on a personal level with the image of perfection so it leads to a disconnect. Plus knowing the full story in advance doesn't lend any favors to creating tension devices within the film. When you know in advance that the character always lives it diffuses much of the dramatic elements.

As far as portraying the emotional range of Jesus as a human I thought the passion was pretty strong, but a lot of people dislike it because of how he's portrayed as it clashes with a lot of the perceived perfection common in other renditions in film.

Having one song (or a few) involving christian themes doesn't make you a christian rock group, that being said my statement is kind of stupid as there's lot's of non-boring things that involves religion like I find the architecture of many religious buildings fascinating for example.

Not sure if religious, though.

Horde is totally Christian, every song that has lyrics speaks about Christianity.
For instance, Drink from the chalice of blood is about the Eucharist. Weak, Feeble, Dying, Antichrist is about the antichrist being weak, feeble and dying. Invert the Inverted Cross is, well, self-explanatory. Release And Clothe The Virgin Sacrifice is about some virgin that repent and is consequently saved from a human sacrifice by some kind of satanist cult by angels, or something.
But it seems it does not suit your tastes...

It's pretty tough to make a story for a fanbase who really, really can't tolerate any kind of challenge of their pre-existing ideas. Challenge any of their pre-existing ideas and you risk alienating them, but challenge nothing and you've made a boring movie. And perhaps the biggest risk of all is that you might change something just for the sake of changing it, and actually lose what's important in the story along the way.

That doesn't make it impossible, of course, but you do need to really know the story, and know your audience, and have a genuine desire to tell them the story in a way they haven't seen before. And then execute that perfectly.

Obviously, Mark Burnett didn't choose that approach. Mark Burnett is the guy behind Survivor, The Apprentice and about half of the other reality TV shows that suck but somehow rated really well anyway. He isn't making anything because he wants to put a new artistic vision on the screen, and help people know God better. He's doing it because there's a lot of money in the Jesus market, and a Jesus movie that is all about Jesus without upsetting any particular denomination is a solid investment. That History Channel Bible series he did was boring schlock that didn't help anyone see anything about their faith in a new way, but it was highly profitable schlock.

So, you know, business as usual. If this was Batman and Batman and Robin was just released, we'd call it exploitative producers ringing every dime they could out of a franchise. But instead, because it's religion, we somehow leap to thinking the problem is with the story, not with this particularly exploitative production.

Son of a carpenter, who far from making chairs all day spent his time preaching radical religious beliefs, and was eventually executed for it. There's really no problem with that story.

Honestly it'd be better if they did it on the Apostles like Paul of Tarsus or Peter and how they eventually got killed instead of Jesus. A bit more relatable given that Jesus is divine and man at the same time whereas the others are only human, even if heads and shoulders above others in their enlightenment, it'd be easier to cast and write and you wouldn't have to worry about the portrayal as much.

I also would not say no to an Old Testament movie, I'd love to see Elijah calling down fireballs to blow up guys sent after him into a crisp.

Havent read a single post in the thread, just a heads up.

If I made a Buddy Christ movie where Jesus was a Baller Mother Fether and just kicked it with regular people would that make him less lame?

Or should Jesus be in a Rambo style movie where its Jesus VS all other deities in the thick jungles of Vietmars or something?

I would settle and watch a Jesus movie where he fights crime with the super friends, and I hate the super friends!

This is a good idea. Perhaps a story about James would be cool to. I'm sure being the brother of Jesus was pretty rough on him.

Carpenter is just terrible translation. The word translates closer to construction worker or builder.
