God Hates Fred Phelps.

Actually the very best these groups can do is for ther Patriot Riders, pro gaty groups etc get together and organise a formal statement saying there is to be NO PICKETING for Fred Phelps funeral of any kind. Invite press to turn up and see the funeral cortege pass through empty streets. Some counter protest organisers should be close by so that if anyone does want to come and wave placards they can be educated not to.

The message is simple, what he did was evil, so we wont join him. Let his family 'mourn' in peace, if they make a stand at the funeral, which they will do turn your backs on them, and say nothing. This would be the final word, and cement total victory over Westboro Baptists.

True, but maybe a simple beating attack from a mob, or some other large scale attack on them will suffice. They would only be feeling merely a fraction of the pain they've caused to others.
It's truly a shame though... for the younger ones. The older ones are probably not even Christian. The younger ones, I've heard, are sort of indoctrinated into this. Some of them even leave the church and feel honestly bad for what they've done.

Lets get this clear.

NONE of them are Christian.

Or put it this was they are as Christian as they are patriotic Americans. On the barest veneer of technicality and they share as much ground on their 'American patriotism' as the Freedom Riders as they do with anyone else.

In the end, Phelps hate mongering has probably done more good for the gay rights movement then could have been imagined as it put a real, tangible face on hatred and forced society to accept that the slippery slope also involved creepy weirdos like Fred. Ugh, this is going to be like when Osama bin Laden was killed a while back. People were out in the streets celebrating and completely ignoring the fact they looked almost identical to the religious extremists who were celebrating when the towers went down. And then they wondered why people over there still hate us.

Showing up to this guy's funeral and picketing it does NO GOOD. You're just sinking to his level and legitimizing his tactics. Plus, you're just going to make his followers feel justified and may even motivate them to keep going where they would otherwise fragment and fall apart.

Just leave him be. Let his church fade away. Stop giving the bastards the attention they crave. Of course, I'm wasting my breath. If the location of the Funeral leaks it'll be the largest protest in years

THere's a big difference in saying you believe in Jesus and actually following his teachings, remember Jesus wasn't exactly big on people who paid lip service to a religion but acted not according to it's tenets.

Oh. I guess you know that first hand, do you not ?
Because from what I know, Jesus is dead and gone (if he even existed), and all we have to know his teaching is old second-hand (or third-hand, or worst) accounts that may or may not be consistent together, that or may not be true. And everyone is welcome to choose which account is true, which one is false, and all that.
So, if someone want to say that actually, Jesus teaching said you had to sacrifice your firstborn, and he gets followers, they would still be Christians, just not having the same interpretation of the teachings of Jesus as you do.

The Louie Theroux docs on his life were really interesting: it was terribly sad to see the conflicted emotions of the daughters who had to follow their teachings which might contrast with their honest emotions.
In the end it infuriates me that he's lived so long because according to him anyone who dies prematurely has done so due to Gods will. I hate to think he feels he's won. It's also somewhat true to think that he was nothing but a professional troll who thrived on upsetting others.

Remember though, he was excommunicated the year before by his own church. Won't that mean he technically lost?

No, because if the Westboro Baptist Church hates you, you must be doing something right. Which makes this situation kinda ironic, huh?

Didn't see this here...

Statement from George Takei:

I take no solace or joy in this man's passing. We will not dance upon his grave, nor stand vigil at his funeral holding "God Hates Freds" signs, tempting as it may be.

He was a tormented soul, who tormented so many. Hate never wins out in the end. It instead goes always to its lonely, dusty end.

Absolutely true. Once you stoop to someone's level, then you admit that if that's the right thing to do, then everyone should now treat you that way.
