On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Thanks for the detailed reviews Ronin_eX and Frozenwastes, time taken to write that is appreciated

I'm a bit of a sucker for starter boxes and the new one sounds like quite a good deal so will probably pick it up at some point (see that Wayland are selling it for 20% off, sure it is worth 60 quid or so!)

I'm from the future. The future of space

The miniatures are awesome and you won't be disappointed with them. Whether or not the rules will work for you is another matter. If you enjoy the central mechanic and don't mind the fact that the entire multi-step process boils down to three usual results. I can see how making intelligent decisions to maximize results might be appealing to some. I do get that. Even if I think it's a big waste of time compared to more direct resolution systems. When I'm a commodore of the fleet, I don't really want to aim every cannon. Some people though, would see it as depth rather than needless micromanagement.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.
