This is something I've been pondering for a while too.

Space Marines as a trademarkable term seems to be on much flimsier footing that Sisters of Battle or, to a lesser degree, Imperial Guard. I can't see GW changing the name to Adeptus Astartes, it seems like a such a surrender of brand recognition. And the change to Astra Militarum doesn't seem to do much either, since any 3rd party could simply label their own goods as Imperial Guard, and everyone will know what they're talking about (even in a void with a new customer, they're still going to correlate Imperial Guard with Astra Militarum since IG is listed as the more common name).

I just don't get it

Honestly with the Chapter House stuff going on I thought the reason we'd waited so long for the new Marine stuff post the start of 6th was so they could rebrand the whole line.

Maybe there is no rhyme or reason. They did it just to watch the world wide web burn?

I mean I'm not throwing my fists up in the air and decrying GW as destroying 40k for the name change.

But still it just seems so strange to me; I honestly can't imagine the meeting that lead to the decision to change names, and what the intended purpose was.

He was always a really cheap gimmick character. If they weren't going to do something to make him effective or at least less of a gag I'd say he'd have a place, but as is he was just something fairly lame in execution.

Yeah, Marbo was a gimmick. The only real reason people liked him was because he was made into a meme.
Gameplay wise he didn't really offer that much, imo.

The removal of Chekov, Al Rahem and Kamir is a pity though; without them it's mostly Cadian and Catachan being represented in the book.

Just like people like Creed because of TACTICAL GENIUS and the shenanigans it could bring (not that I saw people bringing him to actually outflank things all that often).

Marbo was an interesting idea, even as a parody character but without some solid rules or a good utility other than the "let me kill myself with this Demo Charge" he wasn't ever really going to be that handy overall.

I suppose they see the Marines as being too valuable to mess around with, or something like that. At least for the moment.

I would have figured that'd be the exact reason to slap a "Codex: Adeptus Astartes" on the cover and then just call them Space Marines through the whole book. Or should I say "Astra Classicum"?

The reason that they didn't change the Space Marines name is two fold.

1. It was before the ruling of the Chapterhouse case and they seriously thought that they were going to win.

2. It's the marquee name associated with their game system.

That's about it.

Space Marines dropped after the ruling though. I will conceded that the stuff was likely printed by then though.

And I could still see them changing it, if nothing else to help push the feel of the setting a little more.

Is it wrong to say that the name "Astra Militarium" is kind of growing on me? It's just such a goofy faux-latin name. It suits the Imperium perfectly.

That should read "easier to trademark". I don't think GW has much in the of actual copyrights on things (and yes they're different things and no I don't know why it bothers me when people use them incorrectly/interchangeably).

I love how in the aftermath of their Chapter House embarrassment, GW did not learn their lesson but instead took a hilariously stupid angle of trying to trademark everything they have by changing its name to something idiotic.

I don't know who will regularly call the Imperial Guard the "Astra Militarum" with a straight face. Everytime I hear the term I just think about how it came to be and laugh. I mean are people seriously going to walk into GW and some employee is going to say "Buy our Astra Militarum Tempestus Scion Taurox!" to a parent?

Y'know if the IG name change was due to trademark/uniqueness issues...

What were they thinking with Imperial Knights? I mean both words are painfully generic and there are already plenty of traditional knights in GW's product line.

Sure that's what they were called in Epic but it would be easy to say the "Knighticus Imperiales (commonly called Imperial Knights)".

It irks me when I'm tagging the gallery that these giant mech things share a name with armored guys on horses.

"Imperial Knights" is trademarked as a phrase basically. I don't recall seeing "Imperial Knights" much in anything as Empires aren't usually associated with Knights.

That's because the Stormtrooper command box and the stormtrooper box are the same.
It's a duel kit. Which is why it's 21 pounds.
