I do not work out at all, except for work. Carrying 200 pounds of rebar on your shoulder all day is a bit of a workout. I recently had to go to the doctor due to a sinus infection and they took all my vitals. The Doc walks in and asks me how much I work out. I just kinda look at him like ... are you serious? He was. I explained that I do not work out at all and in fact I am a pretty heavy smoker (pack a day for 27 years). His jaw drops a little bit and he tells me that my heart rate is 45. I guess the standard is something like 60 or so and he took it that I worked out and never smoked a day in my life.
I had a similar thing happen to me, I went to the doctor for something small and he took my vitals, turned to me and said "You are as fit as a horse, do you work out?" To which I responded, "Neigh".
In coming up with that joke, I ate a chocolate bar.

I hardly get the chance to go to my 'local' gaming store since it isn't too local to where I live (about a 30-40 minute drive depending on traffic) and not near much else of where I typically am out running errands.
Having said that, I see all kinds of folks there, from what many of you seem to consider the typical gamer, to the guys stopping in from Hunter or Stewart who tend to be in pretty good shape. Usually, the guys in at least decent shape are the majority of the customers when I go in to be honest.
As for staying in shape or getting in shape, for me it has a lot to do with eating well and portion control. I tend to get a tiny bit of exercise day to day just from taking care of the horses and chores around the house, though I typically do more 3-4 times a week.

I hate exercise and love food but need to get healthy, unfortunately shift work and health problems make it difficult. Closest I get is walk to and from work, sometimes to town, and the manual handling at work.
This thread has made me look into the possibility of getting some home gym equipment though to try and get into some form of shape.

One of my favorite pieces of equipment is this:
Fits on a door frame as a pull up bar, on the bottom of the doorway as a sit up bar, can be used for push ups and other exercises. Cheap, does not take a ton of room/floor space, easy to use...
I generally keep mine in the door way between my bedroom and the bathroom, doing a set each time I go through the door.

Not by obese people often times. Try doing a chin up at 400 lbs+ It is one of the problems of obesity, and getting passed it can be very difficult. One's ability to move and exercise is more limited, and most of the exercise routines/machines were not developed with that size in mind. Free weights actually tend to be pretty good in situations like that. Shame/insecurity tends to be the other obstacle for people in that situation.

The effects of age on physical capabilities is frequently exaggerated. The wargamers I've been around were undoubtedly in much worse physical condition than national averages. I'd say a solid 75% were obese, not just overweight. Automatically Appended Next Post: Ahtman wrote: Sigvatr wrote:Bodyweight exercises are enough if you want to just stay healthy. It's not exactly hard to lose weight rapidly when morbidly obese. It can be hard to start. People just don't have the discipline to eat healthier and eat less.

Being fit or somewhat close to it is understanding that your body only needs so much fuel. Cut back on certain foods and get a little bit of stretching and walking in your life. I am often perplexed by people who overeat ( and there are some in my own family ) that complain that if they do not eat that they get hunger pains. I have never had these. I can go for 3 days without eating as long s I have Mt. Dew and Camel Wides I am good.
Not to say that I am superbly fit but I can do almost any job that my work entails and I very rarely get winded. Try staying bent over all day tying rebar on a bridge for 8 hours and you will know the meaning of sore. It really does bother me that the majority of Americans are overweight and just kinda ... let themselves go.
Carbonated beverages help to combat hunger pains. Nicotine is a natural appetite suppressant. It's not surprising that you aren't going hungry. If I eat under 3000 calories in a day, I will experience hunger pains even if I'm eating "healthy", filling foods.

Well, I see older men regularly in my gym, some are pretty ripped and are very well developed. They're easily in their 50s, salt and pepper hair - this is the 5am early morning business men crowd. We all bust weights together, they shower, and get in their suits and off to work. Age isn't really an excuse, not until you're in your 60s and you can't do beyond the basic gak anymore.
As far as injuries go, unless your entire body has been decimated, it's also no excuse. You may not be able to work one or two muscle groups, but the unaffected ones don't deserve to atrophy because one area of your body can't handle focused stress.

So if your knees are messed up what muscle groups are you going to work again on an aerobic basis?

I didn't say anything about aerobics being mandatory. You can still elevate your heart rate, and develop muscles, working your upper body - chest, biceps, triceps, abdominals - on stationary equipment if your knees aren't great. You are still using excuses.

Interesting to be lectured by someone probably older then my own kids.
Lifting weights only is not going to cut it. now answer my question youngling. How do you lose stay fit when you can barely walk? When you have arthritis in all your joints? When you're taking warfarin and standing up takes all your energy and it will never ever ever get better?
I submit clue not you have.

Now for something more accurate you would need to go to YMCA and see retired swim classes etc., not some freak in a gym.

Nothing's better than a great cardio program, and then an hour or two of strength training. It pays off in every aspect of daily life. The stares women give you, females who are complete strangers coming up to you at bars/clubs and rubbing your abs/arms, constant energy, strength to do anything you face - there's no end to how much the effort works for you. You get to wear the latest and greatest fashion, since you fit the clothing like the models do, you feel great about yourself and have confidence untold. Once you make the gains and get a taste of the POWER, you'll never stop.
It might sound kind of homosexual, but when men stare it's the best feeling of all . The jealousy is almost palpable, they want to be fit and strong like you so badly, but . . . just aren't disciplined enough. You have absolute dominion over everybody except those bigger than you in the gym - and they keep you motivated to keep training, because when you aren't, they ARE.
