You don't need to re-register to buy anything. You can make a purchase by entering details and then have the option of registering.
I didn't see that anywhere. Do you only know this because you've done it?
Yup. You add stuff to your cart, go to checkout and there's an option for 'new customer'. You can then place your order and on the last page once it's confirmed you have the option to register.
Registering takes all of 30 seconds though so it's not really a big deal. the checkout process is a lot quicker than it used to be for registered users now.
Right, but that assumes the user hasn't already given up by that point, after trying to log in and failing. maybe it's dead simple to re-register or to buy without registering, but a huge percentage of casualish browsers just won't bother.
Internet customers are fickle and impatient, so the more barriers you put in their way the less will bother going through with it. The site being different will cause some to leave it, not being able to find what they want will cause more to give up, those that find something they want and can't log in will give up. You want to make it as easy as possible if you want customers money, and GW haven't done that.
I feel there is no hope for humanity if people are that impatient...
If you were already registered then you would have had the newsletter about the new website which also tells you that your old account has gone.
I have issues with some parts of the website, but buying something and registering are both incredibly easy and short on time.

There have been plenty of metrics done. The aimed cut-off for page loads used to be 30 seconds (i.e. if your webpage took more than 30 seconds to load, you'd start losing a lot of viewers). Try just staring at a blank screen for 30 seconds and see how long it feels. And that's only going to get worse as we expect faster responses.
I was registered on the old site but had newsletters disabled, so I didn't know anything about it. I doubt I was the only one.
There's still no justification for not bringing the accounts over in some form.
Edit: I'm a long way out of date, this paper seems to suggest the waiting time limit is now 2 seconds : http://cba.unl.edu/research/articles/548/
There's probably also figures available about how many users jump ship as soon as a registration form is required.
Here's an interesting link that highlights how people use the internet : http://www.webcredible.com/blog-reports/web-usability/online-behaviour.shtml

Erm...
What new site? Whenever I try to visit their site these days (like five minutes ago) all I get is a construction page. I haven't even been able to access their website in about two months. People tell me the wait is over and the new + improved site is up, but I haven't managed to find it yet. Try www.games-workshop.com right now, it's not working.

Yeah - I haven't been able to view their new site either - every time I try and visit I can't seem to get out of the online shop section. :(

I have dreams about managing to find the online shop! I actually want to buy something, but the site doesn't exist for long enough to let me!

It's probably your cache messing up. Try doing a hard refresh ( ctrl +f5), if that doesn't work then try clearing your cache, and if still having problems, try a different browser. If even that doesn't work, then Tzeentch has taken an interest in your internet connection, and emperor have mercy on your soul.

Is the web store really unusable? The new layout may have a steep learning curve to handle and I would see why that would be a problem to customers or people just peeking around, but is it really all that bad? The biggest problem I have with it are all of the filters (FILTERS, FILTERS EVERYWHERE). And with that comes long load time for each change you make. That, to me is a minor annoyance, other than that I can get around the website fine, it also looks a bit more modern which is ok with me. So here is my question, how the heck could it stink so bad? Guess it's just me.

It seems to work perfectly well for me, exactly what parts of it do you struggle with?
I don't often buy off it, but it seems easy to find stuff based on your army/FOC.
Its certainly acceptable, maybe I'm getting old but I don't see what it needs to be doing other than what it does!

Not unusable, just irritating to have to check and uncheck different filters to get from section to section rather than just being able to click on a link. It's clunky and time consuming.
