As to the question of Tau having family units... no. The young of a given Caste are raised in communal groups of their peers, reducing the concept of something like the nuclear family and instead instilling a sense of being a part of a greater whole.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

They do seem to work a bit like the BattleTech Clans

Just read "Tthe Greater Good" and in it the Tau have human "Facilitators" to deal with the rebuidlig and integration of conquered Imperial planets:

Ku’ten vos’kla (Those who guide wisely) Facilitor
The Tau train humans from human worlds that have now embraced the Greater Good to help them in the difficult prossess of intregating new populations that have been aquired s aresult of the expansions of the Empire. They are brought in after any conflict has abated and are tasked with helping whats left of any local authorities to rebuild their world, whilst also promoting the Tau way of life.

Some good Tau-Human intereaction in the novel - and even the fact that the Facilitator is an attractive female does not stop Cain and Jurgan from wanting to put a bullet in her. When its suggested that she accompany the fleet as a liason - Cain says taht she would be killed quickly by outraged Imperials adn they can't keep her safe - its safer to have just the Tau.....

I AM A MARINE PLAYER

"Unimaginably ancient xenos artefact somewhere on the planet, hive fleet poised above our heads, hidden 'stealer broods making an early start....and now a bloody Chaos cult crawling out of the woodwork just in case we were bored. Welcome to my world, Ciaphas."
Inquisitor Amberley Vail, Ordo Xenos

"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001
