used to play it a fair bit over lunch at college, four or five way games with three or four ships each taking about an hour or so.

?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!

4 or 5 way game in an HOUR?!?!?! That is amazing. I could not do 2 ships in under 2 hours. What was your secret?

Amazing....

1 escort ship each maybe?

I remember some games lasting 3-4 hours, just for 2 players!

Really no one is mentioning Dreadfleet hahahhahahahahahahaha

The problem with Dreadfleet is it's pretty limited. There's no realy 'build your own' fleet thing going on. From the people I've heard from that actually bought it, it was quite fun if very gamey.

It's also no longer available, so a pretty moot point. Must better to find a game that's available and supported. But I'd definitely look for rules and mini's separately, even if you get them from the same company.

There is always Ram Speed that is free from this site. It covers ancient Galley combat and is very concise.

Then there Is also Man O'War, a long defunct game from GW but still played by many fans, and with a good basis for designing new fleets.
The main rules and both expansions are available free from here:
http://www.4shared.com/office/drll85oD/man_o_war_-_warhammer_-_rulebo.html?locale=en

Edit:
You can scratch build your own ships for Man O'War as the old ships can be hard to find at low prices, unless you get lucky like I did
Ram Speed can be used with any suitable Galley minatures but 1:300th was the scale intended by the designer.
If you look at his site he also does a skirmish scale variant.

Well, one does come to mind.... Franklins Sea
Its free to download and you can either buy minis or build them out of ice lolly sticks.

[EDIT]

Alternatively the rules I mentioned above are also good ones and you can scratch build your own ships or use historical ones.

Rod Langton also does a very good set for Napoleonic era games.

Called Signal Close Action there is also a fast play version which is simpler.

Warhammer Historical's "Trafalgar" rules are OOP but could be found secondhand and offer a more Warhammery approach to Napoleonic naval battles.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

The Mongoose game.

If the rules are all right you could get them and ignore the official models which are expensive and a different scale to everything else on the market and have only a fraction of the necessary ship types, and use something like Navwar or GHQ instead.
