The gun in my left hand (as I think my clumsy non-dominant left hand would be able to cope with the simple point and click interface), sword in my right hand, as I actually have some strength and dexterity in my dominant hand

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

When you rush towards the target and want to chop it to ribbons, you really want to hold the melee weapon on the dominant hand, since the charging is just a prelude to the real deal.

Depends on the soldier's purpose. An assault marine or honour guard? Sword probably goes in the dominant hand since swordsmanship>Marksmanship. For a guard sergeant or someone who doesn't want to have to use their sword it would probably go in their off hand so they can focus more on marksmanship. I personally prefer to model my guys with their sword in their dominant hand however.

Hmm. I genuinely have no idea which handedness I am (see spoiler for why). I'm in the dominant hand gets the sword camp, but Buttons makes a good point here- it depends on culture and purpose.

Have you considered that you may be ambidextrous?

Does that not imply an equality in the dextrousness of both hands?
And how does being ambidextrous fit with sword and gun- just pick a side? I guess which side the pistol ejects has some bearing on it all too.

Sounds like you have it to me. And on that note, yeah, I guess it would just be pick and choose. Or use two pistols

Neat. I'll go with that. And Alucard-style dual pistols is always the way to go

Not necessarily ambidextrous.
My brother does certain things left-handed, however is right-handed.
Better example, Inigo Montoyo and the Dread Pirate Wesley.
Both are right-handed but fight just as well lefty.

For what it's worth, wikipedia's "cavalry draw" entry says that the sword would have been used in the dominant hand and the pistol in the off-hand.
"The pistol was considered by the Army to be a secondary weapon, with the right hand used for the saber."

Hmm. Interesting fact.

Some modern pistols let you switch which side it ejects from. Same with rifles, especially bullpups (some bullpups like the P90 solve this by launching spent rounds down). Some require taking them apart to switch where the ejection port is, and others you have to buy specific models for the ejection port to be on the correct side.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

For what it's worth, the bolter appears to be interchangeable to some degree. The old school 40k advert with the Crimson Fists fighting atop a mountain of their own dead clearly shows bolter rounds being ejected from the right on some and the left on others.
