Grey Knights and Space Wolves.. Eh.. So currently I'm trying to build up a IG army, Who will be traitor guard and summon daemons (Mostly to allow me to try Imperial Guard and daemons at the same time) And the new Ork release is making me more drawn to orks.. Meh.. I hope I'l find the perfect army for me one day..

How long did it take for you to find that one army? How many armies did you try before finding the army you love so much?

I have to say, the ONE army that seems to be universally loved by both its players AND its opponents are orks. No one can play them with a straight face...and no one tries. They are just fun to play, fun to fight against. I'm not an ork player but did dabble with my friends models and cannot deny that they were incredibly fun.

The other army I pretty much never hear bitching about is Astra Militarum. the IG come off the board in handfuls and thats gratifying to the opponent I think. Tank armies as a rule are just too prone to REALLY bad days for people to fear or despise facing them and those who love tanks love playing them and seem willing to weather that. So I guess that's the other force that seems to get a pretty fair share of love.

Outside of those two, people are always finding some way to insult, downplay or not enjoy something about a codex. Gamers are unhappy people at times. I suppose the social life that led many to gaming probably speaks volumes to why. Be that as it may, those are the two that I pretty much just dont hear the word "Cheeze" attached so often.

Personally I dont give a flying F word. I have loved and played Tau through three stages of terrible and never quit on em. No one better say a word to ME about playing Tau. If you cant handle a codex, change. Trust me. no list is unbeatable. Find a way and tell the haters to just shut UP already.

First try with Dark Angels.

When I was 12 and was starting 40k I thought (and still do) terminators were the coolest things ever, and when I found out you could make an entire army of them, I just had to do it.

Now, 11 years later, I own the entire Deathwing, half the Ravenwing and about 70% of the 3rd Company.

I love Dark Angels.

Two tries. I got Blood Angels when I was like 12, as part of GW's typical churn and burn customers policy.

The next christmas however, I told my parents to "surprise me". The guy at the shop suggested Orks to them, and I was massively disappointed (wanted Tau... god I cringe when I think of back then)

They were mostly sold or thrown out, but the idea of Orks stayed with me. Then Dawn of War came out...Guess I'm a very sound-orientated person, because the audio experience of the game got me back in and the voice acting of the Orks in particular just got me hooked on them. Then came DoW 2, and when I clicked on an Ork he asked "wheres da squig ointment?". Started Orks within a week.

Absolutely love everything about these guys, except their performance on the table. However thats entirely the result of crappy game rules, not any fault of the faction - Fast and choppy or horde and choppy or wall of dredds... yeah Orks are the only thing keeping me in this game and I think they're absolutely fantastic.

The other army I pretty much never hear bitching about is Astra Militarum.

You can have some pretty gak games against IG leafblower lists, but otherwise I agree. Theres something about those armies that haemorrhage models even when they win, that make the game enjoyable for everyone involved.

I knew I wanted to play Space Marines when I started and was using SM codex. Every single list I brought had at the minimum 1 squad of RAS. The guy who owns the shop where I play noticed this fact and pointed me towards the BA codex that was very soon to be released. When I found out that I could take RAS as troops I knew that I had found my army. Then the codex was released and I started reading the fluff and found out about the Death Company from my buddy and he explained it as thus: These marines have a genetic defect and if they live long enough they just one day go crazy ... like full on bat guano psychosis. They take and paint their armour black and send them out to the front line to kill as much stuff as they can before they die.

Yep, I fell in love with the Death Company because who would not love an 8 foot tall homicidal maniac who wants to just destroy stuff because it is there or in his way while he heads over towards the enemy to cut them into little pieces ... because he flipped his lid. Love the fluff of the BA. For example, Mars is pissy with them because they will not just hand over the STC for the Lucifer engines. I think that is hilarious.

Mars: Give it to us.

Dante: No

Mars: Please?

Dante: No

Mars: Can we work out some kind of a deal?

Dante: No

Mars: By the orders of the High Lords of Terra we demand that you turn over that STC!

Dante: ......

Dante: ......

Dante: ......

Dante: Let me think abou ..... No

With me, it was my third attempt. I tried first with Tau - I loved the fluff (closest thing to a "good" guy army in the game, plus I loved the idea of an army focused on battlesuits), but I wasn't thrilled with the models, and Tau was a pretty low-tier army back when it was using a 4th Edition book in a 5th Edition game. After getting beaten horribly several times, I decided to come back to Tau after they got a new book, which they finally did in 6th.

After I shelved the Tau for a while, I went into Space Wolves, because they were the hot new thing at the time. This time, I liked all three aspects (I adore the models, the Space Wolves kit is my all-time favorite GW kit), but I never really found that one list that I really loved to play, or at least I didn't until I started running a drop pod list, years later in 6th Edition. I amassed a sizable collection of Wolves and, after playing around with conversions for the first time with Long Fangs and Grey Hunters (since GW seems to think that Wolves should run nothing but plasma guns for their special weapons), I decided to give Orks a try.

And man, oh man, did I find my home in the Ork horde. The codex is just a joy to read through because of all the silliness thrown in. The models are great, not because the official Ork models are great, but because Orks are the one army that's entirely justified in looting and using absolutely anything from other armies - one of my proudest models is my Battlewagon, which I made by taking a Land Raider and attaching all kinds of Ork gubbins to it. And even if the army isn't doing the best right now, it was worth playing for the look on my opponents' faces when they went, "You can do what?" Battlewagons that could smash into things with Strength 10 hits, entire armies that could benefit from a 5+ cover save thanks to a well-placed Big Mek, Nob Bikers that could run around demolishing entire units and using cheesy wound rules to keep from dying. Win or lose, Orks were always just a ton of fun to play.

Now I just hope GW doesn't screw us over with the new codex...

And these posts are making me wanna try Orks instead of Imperial Guard and Daemons.. XD Orks just seem wonderfully fun to play, They have cool models and they are very flavorful. Unfortunately.. We already got two ork players in our small group (We are currently.. Umm.. 3 or 4 people that play 40k.. With one thats building an army, and one that has an army, but only plays 400 point matches once a year or so.. XD) So that makes me hesitate on orks..

I haven't found them, yet.
I love models from LoTD.
I love some of the Space Marine models and gameplay. Ironclads just give me a huge- *ahem* hug...?
I am "head-over-heels" in love with the Orks. they're my 3rd army. Second if you don't count the 411pts of 'Crons I bought as anti-vehicle for my SM in 6th ed.
I'm not *too* keen on the Ork models, though. I just love the buckets and buckets of dice, the fluff, and the randomness.
And I love the skeletal design for some of the Necron figures. I love the Scarabs and Spiders too.

I'm attempting to breed my Space Marines and Orks at the moment; they shall be SPORKS.

My first attempt was with Space Wolves, loved the Vikings in space thing, loved the characters and the way they played, in the end what ruined it was how already fluffed out the chapter is, every Wolf Lord is named, there's no room for making your own and even then very little is said about most of them, so it's hard to feel attached to them if you convert one up.

I knew from the day I first played Dawn of War: Dark Crusade that my heart belonged to the Word Bearers, I love that they're still a Legion and are bonded strongly by their faith and common hate (except where Erebus and Kor Phaeron come in).

I was about six months in to 40k when I jumped ship to them after reading the First Heretic at my first job, which I hated. Seeing that even though they're the architects of the state the Imperium is in, reading that they did what they did because they wanted the best for mankind really got to me.

I love the character of Lorgar too, the only one of the Emperor's sons who never wanted to be a soldier, chastised for doing what he thought was necessary.

The XVIIth Legion is the army for me. Every time I think about the army, or I start running out of 40k steam I read this quote, and I am immediately reinvigorated:

"Each of the other Legions would die for their Primarchs, and lay down their lives for the Imperium. But the Imperium is the cancer killing the species. Even when some of your brothers turn against the Emperor, they will fight to command the Imperium. Only the Word Bearers will die for the truth, and for humanity itself."

Death to the false Emperor.

It took me a bit to find the army I liked, I first started with Space Marines like most and they were alright but felt sort of one dimensional in a way so I looked at the rest of the range. The second army I tried was Eldar, which I stuck with for a while before trying out some others (Slaanesh daemons, SoB), however I keep coming back to the Eldar in a way. I'm looking at the moment to finally kick of a wraith army properly now since they have the plastic models.

I just like the models, background and game play of them overall.

It took me several negative years to find the army for me. I played the Dawn of War computer games, and the two factions I loved were the orks and the Imperial Guard. The orks were high energy, crazy, and tons of fun to just roll over the enemy with a mass of boys. I liked the IG because of the Techpriests and tanks.

When a friend talked me into getting into 40k, they were the only armies I looked at. When I discovered you couldn't really play a Mechanicus army without doing a lot of converting, I went straight for orks. They were the favored choice anyways.

Several years later, the only regret has been picking the army with one of the oldest codices in the current game. Conversions are fun, looting is fun, and the feeling of brutality when you get a quarter of a squad in and still wipe out an entire [insert enemy squad here] is exquisite.

"Just the act of orks looting it defiles it! There are Techpriests rolling over in their graves!" "Yeah! I'm rolling over them in their graves!"
"The usage of shipping containers is much like 40k technology: It's been handed down from tech-priest to tech priest, until none of us really remember how it works and we go through many pointless rituals in the belief that it will keep it alive. " - Dayspring

Not long at all. I decided I wanted to get back into 40K after having tried it as a kid, and of all the armies, the SoB were the ones that appealed to me the most. Cool fluff, cool models, interesting playstyle. I did consider other armies, but none of them grabbed me anywhere near as much.

As I've gone on, I've seen no cause for regret in my choice.

Any advice on finding an army for a low income newbie?
I've been I'm the TT scene for a year now, I have some blood angels and dark angels (I love them both, but sometimes there is a feeling of lacking ) I was looking at eldar CSM, or IG.
The only thing stopping me from orks are the IMO horrible models for the boys, what's with that butt.

Anyway I love the eldar models and fluff. But other then the dakka the provide, I think I would suck with them on the table (gamer/fluff addict here, modeling and painting is only because I must sadly)

IG- who doesn't like IG? Badass human soldiers with flashlights and cardboard with some tanks fighting off horrible things. Also, if I did go IG o would only use the karskin models as the infantry because they look sooooo badass.

The thing I like the most is Thousand Sons, and they were the first miniatures I bought (bak in october 2012). But their rules are quite bad... and don't translate what the fluff says. I changed to SM (mid-2013, but not for long) and now I'm with Tau (since Feb). Have a soft spot for Eldar and Necrons as well.

Mostly I'll buy Tau for main army, SM/Eldar/Necrons for allies and 30k Thousand Sons. I believe I'll settle with those.

I've been there, I've had every army over 1500 points except sisters daemons and chaos marines at least once. Took me about 4 years to finally decide on my 2 armies, which are now orks and Dark Angels.Very much like the orks cause well they are ork, and the dark angels have a neat play style or styles depending how you build the models look sweet, especially the ones you cant get in the regular space marine armies, and their fluff has to be one of the best for the entire imperium.

I've accumulated quite a few armies over the last 15 years. I have Eldar, tau, necron, grey knights, and dark angels. But my favorite that I own now is my legion of the damned. 70+ of the old metal marines I stumbled upon at the store when I saw a gw miniatures case marked for $150 and said case included. I asked the guy what was in it and talked him down to 100. I played then with cursed founding rules until those went the way of the squats, then they became my Thousand Sons.

Then the Badab War books came out and I fell in love with the Carcharodons. And now that my disposable income level has gotten to a point where I can do more than just get lunch off of the dollar menu, I am planning on doing something that I have always wanted to do. A full fledged, mostly forgeworld army, complete with tons of conversions and unique models.

The thing that really got me about them was how their parent chapter was hinted at but not said outright, and they left plenty of wiggle room to justify playing them with any marine codex you want. So I plan to make models enough to play them under several.

Well, my favorite army is Eldar since the 3rd ed.
However, I've put them on hold after the new codex has come out. Serpents were too powerful for my liking and the games with them got really frustrating for my opponents.

The alternative for me is Necrons. I like their fluff, the models, and how they can be played. Its a fast moving army with lots of fire power and decent cc. This allows to handle everything the enemy can throw at them.

my first go-round with 40k was the 2nd ed boxed set, with marines and orks, and it was fun, but i never expanded much beyond the set itself. i had more fun building a table to play on, but there was no real gaming community, so it was whatever friends i could convince to play.
i would find pdfs to read up on the fluff periodically, til i discovered the game was on 5th edition, and the boxed set included orks once again. and a dreadnought! and there was a pretty solid community in the houston area to play. i knew from the start that i had to have orks and marines. the biggest riddle was which chapter of marines, so i spent a couple months diving into the fluff again, and decided on the raven guard. but i couldn't just do plain old raven guard, i wanted to build my own chapter, with its own colors and history. so they became deliverance mord, a small* chapter of raven guard successors.

*small because i never had as much money to devote to the game as i would like.

end try at 40k got me my orkz.

I had just bought DV from Amazon. I loved the game. I loved the models. I was going to go Dark Angels. But I decided to go to games workshop and look at the other armies. I clicked on a little thing with the word Orks on it. I was overwhelmed by awesomeness incarnate.

I bought a trukk and some boyz off ebay along with the 'dex. I now have almost 4000 points of Orks. I dare say they are my favorite

When I first discovered 40k to be a tabletop game I wanted to collect Necrons. I hadn't read their codex yet so I didn't really know what I was in for, but the look of their guns and their evil undead robot theme really appealed to me. After a couple Monoliths, 40 or so warriors and a bunch of destroyers, I finally managed to play a few games in 4th, never really learning the rules. I lost interest in collecting Necrons because they were pretty bland, even more bland than Dark Angels, which I started collecting, although I still held a soft spot for Necrons. I never won a game with my Dark Angels, but that might mostly be due to me not yet fully grasping the rules at the time.

in 2011 the Newcron codex came out and I was left to wonder why people were hating on Mat Ward so hard because it made the Necrons significantly less bland and I didn't have a hard time getting back into collecting them again. The revamped fluff was way more interesting and the way the Necrons were portrayed as highly advanced androids, almost like the Geth from Mass Effect made them so much cooler imo.

I like the models, fluff and gameplay of the Necrons, but against certain opponents' armies I steamrolled them too easily. To remedy this I started collecting Nurgle Chaos Marines and they seem to hold their own pretty well, but I've yet to take them to a tournament to face Tau and Eldar armies. Chaos Marines are significantly clunkier and less effective than Necrons in game, but painting them is much more fun, easier and I think they look better.

I've wanted to do Death Korps of Krieg, but the $$ required is pretty daunting.

Honestly it's why I encourage people who are new to 40k to proxie an army or borrow it before buying, there are so many and you may like the fluff or looks but end up hating how they play, or find that the play style for the army doesn't suite you tactics.

I have a friend who is looking at starting he's decided he wants a fast army, so he looking at eldar, dark eldar, white scars, ravenwing, or blood angels.

I suggested that he try them out before he buys anything as well as look up battle reports on a site like miniwargaming, just to get a feel for what the army is capable of.

I have my 2 primary armies, my Dark Angels and my Necron, both are fun and I run them both. My Blood Angels haven't seen much play time lately but I don't plan on dumping them anytime soon either.
