As mentioed by the brother above, that is where the role of combat marines and tactical marines comes into play.

Precisely the point, you'll need to work together as a team to cover your approaches and protect one another just like a real squad would. Your characters all have different stats depending on their role in the squad, making them better suited to some tasks than others. For example, the heavy will be a powerful asset, but only if his flanks are protected and he isn't exposed to too much combat.

Indeed, teamwork is very, very imporant when dealing with evil space bugs bent on nomnoming everything and everyone, so when do we start?

Hopefully soon, I'm going to give it until tomorrow in case anyone else wants to join, then kick it off.

I have also put class stats up in the first post.

Character Name: Elysius Ignis
Chapter of Origin: Salamanders
Age: 84
Class: Specialist
Weaponry: Flamer, bolt pistol, combat knife, frag and krak grenades
Personality: Notably jovial for a member of the Adeptus Astartes, he is also patient, reliable and loyal to his battle brothers, despite their varied heritage. He maintains that he would never leave a brother behind under any circumstances.
Reason for induction into the Deathwatch: Volunteered
Background: Elysius has a good battle record, albeit nothing out of the ordinary. He had the distinction of serving in the 2nd battle for Armageddon and even fighting alongside chapter master Tu'Shan on one occasion, a moment of great honour. After witnessing first hand at Armageddon the dire threat that Xenos can present, he requested to be allowed service in the Deathwatch. Although he returned to his chapter after his initial service, participating in the Defence of Nocturne, he recently beseeched his captain to allow him to return to the Deathwatch once again. His true talents lie with fighting the myriad xenos races and he has since remained in the Deathwatch, likely never to return to his chapter. It is a solemn truth he has come to accept, but he is glad to have found a place where he can be most effective in his duties.

Just realised there's only one heavy weapons spot and it's been taken, so unless Castiel decides to allow two heavy weapon marines I'll just take specialist instead and use a flamer.

Will the Librarian have access to 'general' psychic powers in addition to whatever he rolls? I am talking about little powers that often won't matter, such as Telepathy Mind Speak or sensing Large incoming psychic presences. Not exactly throwing entire bodies around unless I manage to get a good Telekinesis power but you know, the average Joe stuff. Also how will we play the effect of Shadow In the Warp?

It certainly has been a long time since I've been here.

Castiel is an excellent roleplayer and it's been awhile since I was last involved a Space Marine game, so I'm looking forward to this. Should be a lot of good fun!

I feel like getting an old character out of cold storage.

Character Name: Balar Nirn

Chapter of Origin: Red Scorpions

Class: Combat (assault) marine

Weaponry: Vraxis (Personal power sword), Bolt Pistol - decorated with parts of an old hand flamer, frag & krak grenades, combat knife - it appears to be an imperial officer's short sword.

Age: 174

Appearance: A hulking, badly scarred warrior of the Emperor dressed all in Mark 4 power armour is Balar Nirn. Both of his arms are bionic, having lost one just as he joined the deathwatch, and another just after his 60th birthday. He wears an old white cloak over his black armour, the once chameleon like qualities faded - the mighty beast he had claimed it from long dead and the old trophy tattered. A wide, strong face, scarred and pitted with the marks of shrapnel sits atop his broad shoulders.

Personality: Determined, stubborn, leaderly, pious.

Background: Balar, even though he was considered a prodigy with close combat, even by space marine standards, had been a dissident element of the Red Scorpions. The extremely codex dedicated chapter sent him to the deathwatch as a simple measure of cleaning house. He was brash and young, angry and determined. Only one of those features has persisted into his second century - the determination.

Having fought by the side of Inquisitor Malchiel Perros in his first few years of being in the Deathwatch, he faced dark xenos, and even the forces of chaos. A string of other assignments eventually saw him assigned to a squad Gernheart, where he lost his second arm. A frentic series of battles against the forces of darkness -including boarding actions of chaos vessels, one of which Nirn led himself- culminated in a battle over the Deathwatch fortress of that sector and the involvement of the Ordo Hereticus to ensure that no taint had overtaken the Emperors finest.

Several years of working closely with inquisitors of the Hereticus saw Nirn's Loyalty to his Emperor tested to the limits, and not found wanting. When he was returned to the Deathwatch, he was older, wiser and much more scarred. His old friends of squad Gernheart were long gone, but he found his place in the deathwatch once more.

When asked why he still fought in the deathwatch and never returned to his home chapter, he simply answered 'there isn't a point in returning a sword to a scabbard which doesn't fit it'

Elephant Graveyard

Character Name: Sergeant Caleb Mandel
Chapter of Origin: Exorcists
Class: Marine
Weaponry: Combi-flamer "Surprise of the Faithful",bolt pistol, frag and krak grenades, combat knife.
Age:572
Appearance: Caleb wears the dark red armour of his chapter on his shoulder along with an ornate bone white daemon's skull. The rest of his armour follows the standard deathwatch colour scheme. The only other concession he has made to his chapter heritage is a copy of his book of lore, the original too valuable to risk in combat, attached to his other shoulder. Caleb rarely removes his helmet as his face is scarred by long centuries of fighting with fire.

Caleb is a grim and taciturn individual out of combat. In combat his adrenaline pumps at three times the rate of the average astartes turning him into an avatar of war and he blasts and burns his enemies.

Among the Exorcists there is an elite cadre known as the Orisons. Each Orison is dedicated to a particular pursuit and maintenance of certain knowledge. Each Orison carries a book of lore on his chosen path of knowledge. Caleb belongs to an Orison sub-cult known as "Oculus Novum" or Eye of the Nova. The are formed of mostly flamer or plasma weapon wielders and are dedicated to the knowledge surrounding those weapons. Many of the marines in this sub-cult have extensively modified their weapons to greater efficacy at slaying the emperor's enemies. There are even rumours that the highest in this sub-cult have weapons capable of spewing plasma like a flamer spews fire. Caleb spent a considerable time in the scout companies training neophytes in the ways of war. For the main his career has been spent in frontline combat ensuring his skills are constantly at their peak. Caleb was recommended for the Deathwatch in order to watch for possible xeno-daemon crosses, such a hybrid would necessitate the involvement of the chapter if it arose.

Looks like we have 10 Marines already, I'm guessing once Castiel picks a sergeant from amongst the characters that we'll get started.

Alright, hello and welcome to all the newcomers! Looking forward to seeing how this team fares!

@ Darko: Could you change your character to fill the specialist role please? It will fit better with the build of the team for the mission.

Having reviewed the characters put forwards I have decided to award the position of Sergeant to the glass ninja's character Balar Nirn. Please review the additional weapon choices available to you and let me know any modifications to your wargear you wish to make asap!

First post will come tomorrow morning, so be ready for the adventure to begin!

Those kind of things will be fine. I'm planning to represent shadow in the warp by 3d6 and pick the highest when casting psychic powers.

I'm going to update the original post with everyone's characters and stats and make this thread into the OOC chat for the game. I'll post a link to the game thread as a comment in this thread and put a link in the original post once it goes live.

Character Name: Vensk Solem

Chapter of Origin: Omega Lords (Raven Guard Successors)

Class: Combat Marine

Weaponry: Power Maul, Bolt Pistol, Combat Knife, Frag & Krak Grenades

Brother Sergeant Solem was observed at the battle of Hive Kielle outskirts on Rakshan IV by an Ordo Xenos operative, who recommended him for service in the Deathwatch up the chain.

After a salvo of missile fire from Devastator Squad Skia, an enraged Hive Tyrant began a murderous rampage forwards into Imperial lines, knocking aside a Predator Tank supporting Tactical Squad Solem. The savaged remnants of the unit fired at it furiously in retaliation, the squad's Grav Gun struck the Hive Tyrant, slowing its motion and wounding it grievously - it was Brother Sergeant Solem, who in a risky feat of arms, strode forward and delivered the killing blow to the beast with a flurry of righteous hits to the head of the Hive Tyrant, the beast unable to match the Sergeant's speed in its disorientated state, it collapsed forwards in a heap.

The battle proved a defeat as the oncoming horde proved overwhelming, so the Strike Force retreated. It is for this reason that the Sergeant's feat was tainted with shame within the confines of his own Chapter - though commended by his superiors, he did not garner great respect amongst his battle brothers, his company refusing to speak of the day there onwards, for the Ordo Xenos soon issued an exterminatus that wiped the planet of life.

The Brother Sergeant holds some bitterness towards the Inquisition for the act, but understands why it was undertaken - he is certainly not vocal about it. He does not harbour regret, but his charisma has somewhat lessened since the incident.

Hey man, I was just about to close entry, so good timing getting a foot through the door!

Top tip :Try writing your posts in Word or another word processor and saving it as you go before posting it onto the site, it'll save you losing stuff. A lesson I learned the hard way!

And, I've already rewritten it

I figured the fluff I had actually written was flawed anyway because it was based on an actual event where I had a Tactical Sergeant at a tournament knock a Hive Tyrant out of the sky and wound it twice with a bolter. Not quite the melee sort, heh.

So the actual fluff now is a mixture of the context of that piece of fluff I wrote and lost and a similar event I had with a Necron Overlord a while back.

It looks great, man!

The first post has now been rewritten into a reference post containing all the information on the characters in the game, their equipment and stats.

Entry to the Deathwatch is now closed. Prepare yourselves, brothers, for tomorrow your most difficult mission to date begins! For the Emperor!

Ok the game is now live here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/598553.page

Your first task is to decide which path to take. Don't worry about the tiny rippers, they are no threat to you and won't give away your presence.

While Norn Queens are found at the heart of the ship, I get the impression that the 'obvious choice' that is the middle tunnel is not the best one. So shall we simply head down the left one to the aft seeing as it's probably as good as the other direction?

I was going to take the Right, but we have enough marines to split into fire teams if need be.

It might be a good idea actually, split into a 6 and five man team to cover both aft and prow directions, cover more ground etc. It also means if one team is inadvertently overwhelmed the other is still operational.

Obviously once the Queen is located the two teams rendezvous and destroy it, although I'm not sure how we're going to accomplish that seeing as we don't appear to have much heavy weaponry.

I'd say Yeroc, ALEXisAWESOME, Trondheim and Thenoobomb come with me down the right, the rest of the team with you down the left.
