Boltgun is also the name of the group, so it could be argued that it did specify it.

Not a basic concept, this is an advanced rule.

You cannot sit there and claim that the answer is obvious. A quick search only shows that there is still debate across multiple forums, even after the FAQ.

You guys are severely mistaken on what is "obvious" and what isn't. To one side of the argument, it is obvious that it is Boltguns, Combi-Weapons and Hurricane bolters, but this did not become obvious until a FAQ came out to clarify, otherwise they would not have to clarify anything at all..

The fact that something appears in an FAQ doesn't actually mean that people found it unclear. GW quite often FAQ stuff that nobody was actually asking. It's one of the constant frustrations with their FAQs: they address stuff that wasn't a problem to begin with, and ignore stuff that was.

I find myself agreeing that it seems strange for them to have removed a clarification of a fairly debated rule. Why else would they have removed the definition from the 7th ed. FAQ if not for the purpose of applying the SoD to all boltguns (I'm using the BRB definition here)?

One reason, it was in 6th FAQ because people whined about it so they put it into the FAQ.

It is still in debate now and the absence of this in 7th only makes it worse.

Especially as 7th FAQ > 6th FAQ

Again, this is working from the assumption that the previous FAQ entry was a rules change, rather than just a clarification.

The FAQ just clarified what the rule meant. As such, the rule works the exact same way whether that entry is in the FAQ or not.

In theory. It depends on who you play with and where you play at, the interpretation is literally up in the air. Them not clarifying again for 7th edition is an issue. New players won't bother looking at outdated clarifications because they no longer have any bearing on the game as it stands now.

When in doubt, always ask the people you play with what they think first, then go from there.

If the FAQ was meant to clarify the rule, why take it out? It's not as if the rule magically became clear with the release of 7th edition, making the FAQ unnecessary. Anyone who starts playing in 7th will now be just as unclear as to how the rule works as we were in 6th before it was FAQ'd. Why force new players to go digging through the internet for a rule clarification of which they could have no idea?

If it was a clarification as you suggest, why name the category of weapons "Boltguns" while simultaneously removing the FAQ entry? If they really did just want to clarify the SoD entry, they could have either left the FAQ or named the category "Bolt Weapons".

Edit:

Beat me to it.

I gave up trying to guess why GW handles their FAQs the way they do a long time ago.

Probably a smart move. I suppose some of us still have a hold on hope that there is some logic behind it.
