Personally I find a combination works best:

PCS w/ 2-3 flamers in chimera
2x IS w/ Flamer in chimeras
3x IS w/ power weapon (blob) w/ priest
20x Conscripts w/ Commissar

2x 3x meltavets in chimeras

50 guys on foot, 45 mounted. Can bubble wrap tanks on T1 and human wave afterwards. PCS follows the blob issuing MMM, IS in chimeras are there for target saturation.

The rest of the list is Leman Russes/IK up to 2k points.

I think many players will loose interest in mech-vets eventually when they realise there are more efficient ways to dump meltas at point blank..
The whole point of IG competetive is overwhelming enemies with numbers yet in 6th mech-vets overwhelmed the enemy with bs specials with armour.. We now no longer do that..

Sisters can put out more bs4 meltas firing two at a time out of rhinos.. Yes you loose 1 armour point but the whole point is MOAR!!!

So the only two ways to put out superior numbers is to cheapen the chimeras by using platoons (meh) or by fielding so many foot vets that in some terrain can move just as fast, and yet have twice the fire power whilst rendering anti-tank far less efficient for the points.. And if you want to drop some meltas at point blank.. Again there are cheaper/ more reliable ways in 7th

I would think the buff-reliant nature of IG would make bigger units (platoons) far more efficient. Why Prescience or Perfect Timing or Order 10 guys when you can effect 50 with the same buff for the same effort.

Also, who needs suicide melta units when you can twin-link and Tank Hunter 5 lascannons?

Psychic powers have become even LESS reliable now, so if the fire power reliability is dependant on guide/ prescience etc (which many tactics in 6th ed were) then generally speaking it's better these days to pay for a garuantee.. IE 5x10 at BS4 is better then 50 BS3 with 50% chance of rerolls
Whilst orders are still the bomb with blobs.. My experience is that rediculius blobs are so hard to manuver that only 10 or so get rapid fire and 15-20 can't even fire.. Nobody is stupid enough to put a squad righ in front of IG/ fire warriors rapid fire range.

I don't see the effectiveness of blob squads when compared to vets in chimeras. Blobs are easily tied up and you end up wasting ton of lasguns shots when firing the heavy weapons. When Prescience was a realistic option, yes, but not anymore...just dont see the killing power.

Include the fact that whilst many players in my local WERE adamant that a stationary well built blob HALVED the map for your oponent creating a killbox no-mans land...
That tactic is unviable in many mission of 7th..

I use a blob squad of 40 guardsmen with power axe sergeants, a commissar, a priest or two, and a primaris is a lot of fun to use. I generally use this to charge up the field, while a take a vet squad or two to sit back and shoot a little.

If I want to use allies, I'll throw Azrael in the blob and give the whole unit 4++ saves.

Blobs just never did it for me. They weren't menacing enough for me in melee, also I think the fact that I would triple my model count and subsequent painting/modeling time, also hampered the idea a bit. I did have some fun in the olden days with Al'rahem...
