The more apt question would be why do people keep making bad movies out of game licences?
I suppose that is the real question.
None of the abstract games like this that have been made into movies have turned out any good. Largely because they try to incorporate game mechanics into the film.
Which I can't really blame anyone for doing. because without the mechanics it isn't really about the game anymore and instead is about just another fantasy world(which happens to have a game). Which isn't bad mind you.
I think a better way to incorporate the game mechanics would be to have it be a cutscene type movie. Where you have the fantasy half, and then the nerds playing the game around the table. Cutting back and forth. Could be hilarious, although it probably wouldn't work with MTG very well but it would be great for any RPG.

No, it could not be hilarious. It's a stupid idea, like if instead of making the Lord of the Rings trilogy, they made a movie trilogy about some guy reading Lord of the Rings.

And there is also this one:
Part of the difficulty with translating the Princess Bride formula to MtG is that the vast majority of people know how reading a book works and that "getting lost in the book" is a concept that most people are familiar with.
People are going to be able to relate to someone turning the pages on the book and getting sucked into the story, or having to stop reading and not being able to wait until you can pick it back up again to get back into the story.
But if we are going to have people playing MtG then you are going to have a lot of people going " wtf, why did he just turn that card around, what was that, why is this happening" about every game mechanic. And "nerds getting sucked into the fantasy of their game" is already something that is looked down upon and we are going to have the whole "look at that looser, he thinks he is actually a wizard" thing going on.
I don't think that a movie about the game is going to be very good, but I might be surprised.

I agree that that particular approach might not work with MTG. But it would probably work for other games.

I think it could make for an interesting RPG movie, most people are familiar with the "roll dice, something happens" routine.
And you could easily play "real person types" against their "character types".

You could even have times where players are deciding what to do and different scenarios are playing out in their heads(with the fantasy characters helplessly playing them out)
Ok, I try to seduce the barmaid. Rolls dice and fails.
In game: Barmaid slaps Ronolf and pours mead over his head.
Wait! I get a reroll on my seduction checks. Rerolls and succeeds.
In game: Barmaid falls helplessly into Ronolfs arms.

Make a movie out of the Brothers War between Urza and Mishra.
Or make a movie about Ajani and his albino cat buddies.
I was never too interested in Chandra, Gideon, or Garruk. Too white-bread.

Heck yeah.
MTG players are only better than the Yughio players, which isn't saying much.
RPG players can be a mixed bag so it depends on the group. Wargamers are generally a tolerable bunch with only a few GUOs to piss in the lemonade as it were.

Clearly you don't actually pay attention to most MTG players. In my group, for instance, it's about fifteen or so normal people with three of those oddballs no one wants to be near.

Not around here.
Here they're a byword for having rank BO, being incessantly noisy, and leaving trash all over the place.
The store owner only tolerates it because they buy tons of cards. They even have expansion packs in the vending machine.

You have a very, very different sort of magic players than my community does.
In my community the Magic players are by far the most serious of gamers. There is a large following of people who religiously attend every event. While the dress casual, they rarely smell. They are quite polite, their social skills honed by having to actually be courteous to their opponents and the organizers during long tournaments and prerelease events (we have some hardass shop owners who aren't afraid to evict rude people). They are generally good guys, although interacting with them tends to reveal a shallowness due to their obsessive love of the card game. The ones I've befriended tend to be great dudes, although they hilariously neglect other bits of their lives for the sake of spending more time doing magic-related stuff.
The group of nerds that tends to be a little more creepy/unwashed/weird is the comic book collectors, who can vary quite a bit. And the people that occasionally show up to buy porn (some of my local FLGS have a back room filled with 'exotic stuff''.)

The MTG players where I come from (and I am one of them - Black/Red Vampires and Green/White dominator) are and ordinary bunch. Some of us are gamers and we meet up on club nights to play along side WHFB and 40K.
I have a friend who's only nerdy things are LARPing and MTG.
MTG players are just ordinary people. Sure we have those weird/smelly/disgusting people, but no more than any other social sect/group out there.
now YuGiOh players.... They are a creepy/weird bunch
