Subject: Fox acquires Magic the Gathering movie rights.
It will be produced by Simon Kinberg, Brian Goldner and Steve Davis.
Will be based around the Planeswalkers (Yay, we get to see Jace's smug face on the TV......)
For those of you who don't know what Magic the Gathering is all about, to put it as simply as possible, imagine DC's Multiverse with about 1/1000 people being born with the ability to travel between the different versions at will, but "the spark" must be set off by some extremely traumatic emotional trigger (One character had to feel the suffering of thousands of people, blacked out and woke up somewhere else, another witnessed her family slaughtered and home burned, that type of thing).
Pure Speculation
My guess is that the line up will be:
Blue: Jace (Duh....)
Green: Garruk
White: Gideon (Let's face it, the dude is a boy scout compared to Ajani, and Hollywood is going to LOOOOOVE that.... Oh, and he single handled made Magic Cthuhlu his )
Black: Liliana
Red: Chandra
Villain: Nicol Bolas
With either Jace (Being the poster child for Magic) or Gideon (Being justice and Few Vs Many and all that) as the center character.
However, I would KILL for the last movie to be Zendikar (Aforementioned Magic Cthuhlu).
Not sure if this belongs here, or with the rest of the MtG stuff.

Let's face it, The Brother's War between Urza and Mishra would make for an awesome movie by itself. That's where I would start in all honesty.
Partly because it's BECAUSE of Urza that Planeswalkers are what they are now, but mostly because Urza is awesome.

I still have the novels for invasion, nemesis, planeshift and such.
That said, the ravnica trilogy was also quite good.
A story centered on Gerrard would make a very interesting read indeed.

True enough, but I think once Urza had his "A God am I." moment he became untenable as a movie character; at least until you get to the Invasion arc, which requires too much back story to be usable.
I think all various goings on of the Weatherlight could work well as a TV show, though. Of course no one would watch it, and it would probably go the way of Firefly, but it could work.

The right place to start with this is Alara. It is the best place to introduce new viewers to the setting:
You have the Shards of Alara, which serve as a microcosm of the multiverse to introduce new viewers to the concept of the planes;
You've got Elspeth, a planeswalker in self-imposed exile who is forced to confront who she really is, who could make a great hero for the story with a bit of tweaking;
And you've got Nicol Bolas, a dragon with a cataclysmic plan worthy of an epic fantasy movie: the merging of the shards so that he can harvest the power of the convergence for himself.
Ravnica would also be nice to see, but it would be better suited to a gaiden trilogy, rather than starting your series about planes and planeswalkers on a world where neither exist.

This is something which immediately struck me. Given the stigma attached to these things, wouldn't you be better off just using a decent fantasy novel as the basis for your film, rather than a card game franchise?

When I played MtG back in Alpha and Beta days there was none of this back story that I remember. I suppose they just hadn't cranked up the merchandising yet. It was just a fantasy themed card game.
Black: Undead theme
Blue: Water theme
White: Divine theme
Red: Fire theme
Green: Nature theme
Even when I see people playing the game I still get no inkling of a convoluted back story.

Now a days the spectrum goes as thus;
Black: Selfish, Power at all Costs theme (Not necessarily evil)
Blue: Mind/Intelligence theme.
White: Selfless, Good of many vs few theme (Not necessarily good)
Red: Passion in all forms, rage, anger, love, jealousy.
Green: Growth and nature.
Some stories have a White protagonist with a Black antagonist, but others (like Kamigawa) have a Black Protagonist with a White Antagonist.

If they somehow tried to put card mechanics into the movie it would be a disaster.
But I think MtG has done a pretty good job on the story department and has some good writing behind the scenes. It has a certain "the game about the story" feel to it even though the stories came after the game.
As long as the movie is based on the same background as the game, and not the game itself, there will be potential.

Nobody knows yet, but I doubt it. The Brothers War is the story of two donkey-caves. While it's certainly possible to make that sort of movie work (The Prestige is an example), it's not going to be anywhere near as popular - and therefore anywhere near as profitable - as a movie where you actually have someone to root for. The Prestige was able to get away with a $100 million box office only because its magic was quite muted - a couple of tesla coils and some greenscreen work to mesh two shots of the same person into one scene are the high water marks of the special effects work. M:tG's magic is much more flashy, and thus much more expensive to produce.

The same reason they will make a movie out of them is the same reason there are novels made about them. Going by this thread many have read stories written about a card game in the attempt to get people to continue playing said card game by getting them invested in a marketed 'background'.

Let's not kid ourselves though; as long as the movie-about-a-game is well made at least with some attention to the detail of WHY the game was awesome, it can be pretty good.
The original Mortal Kombat movie (Let's forget about the second one) was a guilty pleasure of mine growing up, and I fully enjoyed the Prince of Persia movie.
Really hoping the Sly Cooper movie does good, as well.

Card games do not belong on the big screen, but wizards fighting wizards can totally happen.
That's exactly my personal problem with Yu-gi-oh though; It's a show about people playing cards. Not that interesting, even if you supe up what happens to the people. Magic will (Hopefully) be about the actual wizards.
Though thinking about it, they could totally pull a Sherlock Holmes with the Brother's War; just have Barrin be the one telling the story (Assuming Barrin was alive for that, haven't read anything pre-Jace)
