That's probably a good thing, I don't like it when people do that to me and that seems to be a common response with UK servicemen. I used to get thanked fairly often by random members of the public when I was out in public in uniform but it hasn't happened for a good while, I'm not sure if that's due to changing attitudes of just because I live in close to one of the biggest naval bases in Europe.

I am also wary of any society that venerates its warriors more highly than its teachers.

Even the current 5.0L V8 in the Mustang GT gets about 24 mpg highway, and that pushes over 400 horsepower factory.

24 mpg... thats.... 10 km/litre. Holy gak that's terrible. My gakky old car from 1990 did 18 km/litre. My current one does 16/litre and its twice as big.

Hey, that's actually pretty good for an engine that makes over 400 horsepower while also passing the US's strict emission regulations

Yeah, it's good within that. Looking in from the out side, it's still a terrible waste for a lot of stuff you aren't actually allowed to put to use on regular roads.

Also, muscle cars (and expensive cars in general) mostly just serve to promote ass holes driving worse.

Oh, I don't disagree. There's a reason why I drive a Mazda 2. As much as I enjoy working on and modding cars, it's too big of a money/time sink for me.

And I'd say it's about a 50/50 chance on if the guy owning the pony/performance car will act like an ass-hat while driving it lol. Working in the industry, I see a lot of both sides.

Wars yes, although only really big ones, but we very rarely remember individual soldiers. If you asked the man in the street to name famous British 'warriors' you would be lucky to get more than a couple of names, if that, and they would probably be Nelson, Wellington and maybe Montgomery. We don't make war films anymore either, at least not about heroes.

I don't think that thanking a veteran for their service necessarily means that the society venerates its warriors more highly than its teachers. I think it's more dangerous when a society draws too much of a separation between warriors and teachers. Sir William Francis Butler said it better: “The nation that will insist upon drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to find its fighting done by fools and its thinking by cowards.”

I don't actually think it's on the decline at all.... It's certainly shifting it's focus some, but to say it's declining isn't quite true. It's pretty clear "why" cars like the Mustang sell so well: people who have far less brains than sense think theyre great cars... For the record, the Mustang hasn't been a "great" or even "good" car since 1969.

With certain "car crowds" the car is different, but no less important. I mean, look at the drift crowd, or the rally racing crowd. There's a HUGE segment of the market geared towards racing 4 cylinder, turbocharged lightweight cars that when they arent racing, are fairly decent on fuel mileage.

Yep, and you can imagine it's the same demographic of person, same buying habits in other places, like Fort Carson who routinely face "real" winter conditions, and these idiots all go out and buy something that, unless you're quite good at driving (as in, dont drive like an arse) you'll be all over the road, into other people or into a ditch.

The hell.

As the article says, there was an institutional acceptance of bullying, a belief that nothing good came out of fighting this battle for the kid. There was an idea that the problem was the victim failing to stand up for himself.

It was fething insane, of course, but it was also very real.

Point is, that's gone away now. I look back on some insane gak that happened when I was in school, and because things have changed so much I find it hard to get my head around why the victims didn't go to authorities, and I have to remember how differently schools looked at these issues.

"Don't misunderstand me here: As long as there are donkey-caves, and as long as those donkey-caves are bigger and stronger than other people, there will be bullies. But the thing that is going away (and that has already gone away in many respects) is the institutional approval of bullying."

I never order the beef at the Indian restaurant for the same reason I never get the fish and chips at the chinese place - they have no fething clue what they're doing.

That said, I did make a point of ordering some beef when I was in Dehli, for some reason I can't really remember. It was in the Nepalese quarter, in mo-mos, and it was delicious.

On the outside maybe, on the inside it's still very much ignored, if not outright accepted. "We don't tolerate bullying" is an oft said but rarely proved phrase.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Yeah, sure. But no-one is saying bullying is going away. It wasn't said in the article, and I don't believe anyone here has said it.

What is being said is that bullying, as understood as a part of man culture, in which the manly response was to stand up to the bully, is going away. Whether the school will do something effective, or even properly identify bullying when it happens (as opposed to kids just being dicks to each other) is a whole other question.
