I know, but it can be debunked just as easily.
There probably is an Apocalypse Knight Formation.

There's also a 40k Codex that arranges them into Detachments.

That they are found in two sections of the website proves absolutley nothing.

Then I guess Apocalypse formations are both legal to use and illegal at the same time.

And I leave you with this:

BRB; page14; black box in top left corner titled "The Spirit of the Game." Something about the rules being a framework and adding your own ideas, drama, and creativity...

So if a FLGS says Apocalypse formations are okay to use, they're okay to use.
If a Tournament says they're not, they're not.

Personally, I allow them.

Do not forget the Rules for this forum:

7. Do not bring The Most Important Rule (TMIR) into these rules discussions. While it is something you should most certainly abide by while playing (if you're not having fun, why ARE you playing?), it does not apply to rules debates.

If you, your gaming group, or a tournament want to house rule their use, then there's no problem there at all.

APOCALYPSE FORMATIONS
If a Formation is referred to as an Apocalypse Formation, it can only be used in games of Warhammer 40,000: Apocalypse

Does that work? It is in Every Dataslate released.

Except for the two released in the May 10th (2014) issue of White Dwarf.

(Although the DE one does refer to Strategic Reserve, hence, it becomes Apoc only by default.)

this stuff really confuses me (returning to 40K after long hiatus). I almost picked up Valedor the other day but have no desire to play Apocalypse games, but I'm really interested in the harlequin formation as an ally for my Iyanden Ghostwarriors. I love harlies but I need a fast mover ally to compensate for the slow wraith constructs (I don't field serpents) so the venom mounted harlies were a great fit. What makes this formation so broken that it can be fielded in Apoc games only? If it's a pretty mild formation my buddies would probably allow it but I don't want to field something that is totally OP.

There are two Formations listed in the Miltarum Tempestus Codex.

Edit: I belive the Tyranid dataslates also contain Formations.

Sidenote: The Imperial Knight is listed in the Apocalypse Formations section of the Force Organization tab of the GW website.
They're also listed under the "Warhammer 40,000 Armies" section.

Yup, they are all called Formations in the nid slates. Forgot about those MT Formations earlier.

LoTD has no Formations just a Detachment.
Eldar Ghost Warriors is just a Formation.
Strike Forc just list Formations
Tau FireBase is just a Formation
Reclusiam is just a Formation
Cypher is a Formation.
In fact I have yet to see anything called a Battle Formation, though there are Apocalypse Formations in the Dataslates.

If your buddies are okay with it, then your fine to play it with them. I think most TO's will not let you run the Valedor Formations as they are Apoc by rules usage if not designation.

Ah, I see them. Page 7 seems to read that those Battle Formations and Armour Spearheads are intend for Apoc games only.
