Speaking of Kickstarters, they had these nice little cards at the GenCon booth.

The two important paragraphs:
A Kickstarter is plnned for Fall 2014, to fund the 200+ page Full Color Core Rulebook, announcements will be made on the Dream Pod 9 Website, Forum, and Facebook page the date draws near. We'll need all the Players and Fans support to spread the word and make it a successful campaign and bring new Players into the game.

Good to know!

I've had a lull in activity while working on wedding stuff. But I got the full team together to test everything, so one of these weekends I'll be kicking off some of my scenarios (with full batreps) in earnest.

I deeply appreciate you updating us Solkan.

Also, I wanted to share a little snapshot that Shyborg made for Heavy Gear Assault's Alpha:

This is starting to look really good.

And Cutthroat, I look forward to hearing feedback on Gear-finity. But congrats on the wedding stuff, here's praying it's all good!

So, some weeks have gone by. What's new?

Well, the Argos is being prepped for deployment.

The forums are abuzz with the possibility of a Kickstarter, and I'm certain that if you look in the direction of the Poll on Heavy Gear thread you will see everyone in discussion on those merits and possibilities.

In addition, the Heavy Gear Assault Alpha is in such an uptick that I am overhearing gossip of new openings being made.

I cannot confirm or deny this, it would be best to ask around the Heavy Gear Assault forums.

However, here I will share a few pictures, including the new Argos, as well as a couple of my own personal things that recently never got to see the light of day.

Nice. A lefty bazooka gear! I have to say that I don't model things much left handed. I'll have to try and make that a conscious choice for my next model build.

Have you thought about trying out some washes? I don't know if you've ever used them in the past.

Honestly I tried with the Sagittarius... a light diluting of black Reaper paint with water, right?

....... I don't think it came out well.

The lefty was because I had a standard Black Mamba with a cross-the-chest MAC. I wanted something different. So I choppy -choppied the arms up and put them back together with the hand positioned just so.

I just purchased a force of PRDF Gears, so I can try something new. Anything in particular I should know about the washes?

Deep Fryer of Mount Doom

You can try to make your own washes but it is a bit more than just adding water to paint. They're supposed to go into the crevices and details which normal paint doesn't. If you want to make your own, you'd have to dilute the paint alot and add in a drop of dishwashing soap (palmolive, dawn, etc) into a shot glass of diluted paint to reduce the surface tension. There are fancier and better solutions out there to make your own but I haven't tried them so can't comment on them personally beyond telling you to google them (which is what I did). IIRC there was a few articles I found on Lenny's wash or some such where he gives you an (outdated) tutorial on making them.

I got mediocre results when I tried it myself the technique above (dilute plus dishwash soap) so just buy GW washes instead. The key is to get the fluid to flow into/next to the details without leaving splotches everywhere. If the wash accumulates on a relatively flat surface (plenty of those on gears), you need to wick it off with a napkin. In some cases depending on the colors used and the amount of wash used, you may need to go back with the original colors and touch up the flat surfaces. On my southern minis in my gallery, you can see how the details are "shaded" a bit both in the raised parts and crevices as well as some spots where I didn't follow my own advice and wick away the excess (like the knee pad).

I have in the past painted better in my youth but I'm much lazier now. As you can see, these were my two test models for my southern paint scheme after I got back into HG with the release of the Field Manual. I love washes because they give you from a distance the appearance of more colors used and added detail for very little effort. You can see the effect around the raised details like on the chest and in the panel lines on the gear. I use about a half dozen or so colors on most models and I feel that the washes add the look of a couple more from a distance. I'll never win a painting contest but it gets the work done and I'm fine with the results. My painting is like a kid with a coloring book. As long as I have my crayola 16 and stay within the lines, I'm putting it up on the fridge!

Yours have a shine to them that I kind of like. But the Reaper paints are specifically meant for matte work so they don'the shine. Any particular paint you use to get that shine, or is there something else I don't know?

Deep Fryer of Mount Doom

The GW washes have a tiny bit of gloss to them so that is likely it since I didn't do anything in between the models in the pick above that would do it. I only use flat colors including reaper ones and don't use any gloss colors ever.

I do however gloss before flat coating my minis to protect them from chips as well as to help reduce outlined decals (you can look at my nucoal minis for that as the black shows the bit of gloss better). If you want a tiny bit of gloss, try the following when you're completely done with your minis (including basing them). I lay down a quick layer of gloss coat at multiple angles (it takes a few tries with a few hours of drying inbetween turning the models and spraying them on different sides), put on the decals (if any), another quick gloss coat, and then do a single flat coat. Just be careful that you don't put on too much in any one coat or it'll drip like with my nucoal tanks unfortunately (my hetarois have a bit of that problem). Also, don't flat coat in very hot and humid weather (which may be an issue in TX this time of the year) as you'll get a "frosted" effect from the flatteners in the spray.

I'm cheap and lazy so when I get the motivation to do hobby work, I just go once a week to Michael's or Hobby Lobby and use their 40% off coupons to pick up a can of one spray and the other one the next week if needed. They'll last for a few squads on average if you spray in batches. Hope that helps!

The next step for the Scourge Skirmisher:

And in other news, the Mustang master is being previewed:

From the DP9 forums:

Phil finished up the Mustang miniature for Peace River this week. I assembled the master parts with some blue tac to hold them together and took photos of it from the front and side. Shown with Vanguard variant heavy autocannon loadout. The final miniature will have another of the very light rocket packs on the right side as well and a vibro axe, like the one we include with the Gladiator. Plus it will include a medium autocannon (stock loadout), medium bazooka (Shamshir variant) and snub cannon (Demolisher variant) weapons.

The Beta has received its September update. If you wish to read it, just point your cursor to my blog, or you can go directly to the source here: http://www.dp9.com/content/beta-rules-errata

The Pod has also released the Argos now as a single miniature available to $21.99 in U.S. currency on their store for pre-order for those Peace River fans who have been waiting patiently for their update.

In other news, Arkrite Press has released its own tidbit after taking a summer hiatus.

In addition I have several miniatures that I can now call fully finished.

Spoiler:

So, hopefully I can continue on my journey of painting and basing.

Direct from the KS preview thread on the DP9 forums for those who haven't seen it:

After reading everyone’s comments and feedback about our earlier idea of doing a Kickstarter this fall for the new edition Heavy Gear Blitz! Tabletop Wargaming Core Rules we have decided to change gear. Instead of a book, the Kickstarter, this October, will be for a new Core Starter Box with plastic miniatures and Quick Start Rules to get new players and old into the game and learning the new rules.

The Heavy Gear Blitz! War for Terra Nova - Core Starter Box will be a two player game with multi-player option, so you can play with a friend, or two, right away. It will include three armies of easy to assemble plastic miniatures from Terra Nova’s Northern Confederated City States (North) and New Coalition (NuCoal) factions, and Earth’s Colonial Expeditionary Force (CEF), with a mix of some new and existing models. One player plays both the Terra forces allied against the zealous CEF player, bent on recapturing Earth’s former colony. Multi-player option allows for 3 players, with each player controlling an army, and later stretch goals will additional multi-player options.

The first stretch goals will be to make three more faction armies available, the South and Peace River for Terra Nova and Caprice as an ally for the CEF. Later goals will include molds for more new and existing models, so that we can get most of the basic pewter models into plastic and have more competitive pricing. We have already started 3D modeling, with 20% complete to date, and are aiming to have them all finished by the end of the year. Kickstarter updates will includes images of all the 3D models as they are completed.

We need your support and pledges as Backers to make this happen and secure the future of Heavy Gear. The steel molds used for plastics are very expensive to make, just a small mold that only fits 1 or 2 miniatures can cost $5,000 to $8,000 USD and a larger mold to fit 4 to 6 miniatures costs between $12,000 and $15,000 USD. We want to produce an amazing core starter box with plastic models to go along with the new edition rules, but the mold costs make it beyond our means at present, which is why we are asking for your help. With the molds paid for, running plastic costs a lot less than pewter, so we can bring down our prices and make Heavy Gear Blitz more attractive to all players.

In addition, we are committed to domestic manufacturing and we plan to have all our plastics molded in the United States. This will give us better quality control, oversight of manufacturing. Expected delivery date for the Kickstarter Backers will be in Summer 2015. Checkout all the details below from pledge levels to stretch goals and add-on purchases we plan to have available as part of the Kickstarter.

Let us know what you think about the new Kickstarter plan (give us your feedback here). And most importantly share the news with, friends, family, local game store, game blog or website, every little bit helps get the word out and betters our chances of a successful Kickstarter.

FAQ:
Why is the Kickstarter in $CAD?
Dream Pod 9 is based in Canada and Kickstarter requires its use for Canadian Kickstarters. The Core Starter Box’s price of $115 CAD is about $105 USD.

What is an Arbalestier gear model?
The Arbalestier is fast large gear designed to provide heavy support to hovertank formations. It uses many of NuCoal's recent technological advancements from the Chasseur Mk2, Chevalier, and the Lancier. Alpha rules for this model will be released soon.

What is an Acco mount model?
The Acco provides Caprice forces with a small agile trooper mount that can counter the numerical superiority of Terra Novan Armies.

Does Dream Pod 9 have plans for other Kickstarters?
We will only considered another Kickstarter, after we have shipped all of our Backer rewards.

Does Dream Pod 9 have plans for a full color rulebook?
Yes, we do plan on producing a full size Deluxe Edition Color Rulebook in the future and we promise to take the time to do it right, with top quality editing, before taking it to publication.

Thank You for all your support.

Dave delivers a manifesto for the Heavy Gear Blitz Beta:

"There are always some questions that pop up asking for clarification on so I've pulled and updated some answers from my own game bible. When it comes down to brass tacks I always like to remind players that there are any number of lenses you can view the game through, and it is fine to choose a viewpoint that is different from the standard one. The important part is to choose to have fun playing the game with your friends!

Note: There are a lot of aspects that get considered when choosing how parts of game design impact parts of the rules. For this blog I'm focusing almost exclusively on the core considerations, not any minute of the rules.

The Heavy Gear Manifesto (Game design brief)
This edited brief describes the goals behind the new edition Heavy Gear rules.

The Vision: To make Heavy Gear a classic and modern Intellectual Property that can be a popular cultural device for games and stories set in a science possible fictional future where humankind must face it’s own worst enemy, itself.

The Goal: Our goal is to create a fun and gripping tabletop combat game where between four and twenty models a side face off in a tactical combat scenario. A scenario should last about two hours. The game setting is realistic/tactical with a cinematic flair.

A New Edition: The rules of Heavy Gear started as a role playing game. The number of models used was very low and the detail level very high. Over the years the game has evolved into a pure tactical miniatures game though the rules remained mired in the minutiae of the RPG. This new edition aims to speed up the resolution while fixing fundamental flaws in the old dice system. A new system of rules needs a new start and a new edition is the best way to do this.

HG Beta in 30 seconds or less: Heavy Gear is a combat game between two forces clashing in an effort to achieve their objectives while preventing their opponent from doing the same. The game includes one pilot walking combat vehicles called Gears, Tanks, Infantry, APCs, Artillery, Support vehicles, Aircraft, and Larger walkers called Striders. The militaries of the colony Terra Nova are heroically defending their planet from the invading juggernaut of the Combined Earth Forces and their genetically engineered super-soldiers.

The game system in 30 second or less: The combat system in Heavy Gear is an opposed dice test system. One opposing roll determines how successful any attack is and how much damage is caused using the difference in rolls, a weapon penetration rating, and the armor rating of the target. Models active in units one at a time each choosing their speed and using their position and the best choice of their weapon systems to attempt to eliminate enemy models. The most common modifiers in the game are dice modifiers that add to the base of two D6s for each roll. The game also features advanced Electronic warfare and command options such as electronic cover, sensor jamming, and orders to enhance units.

You should play Heavy Gear because: Heavy Gear is a tactical game with immense replayability and depth. It is supported by a wide range of models that allow players dozens of options when constructing armies. The game is highly immersive with a responsive action system and unparallelled flexibility in player options.

What aspects of the game does the game designer want the playtesters to focus on?: Players should be testing the limits of the system. Be inventive and proxy your models to try out all kinds of wacky army builds. Spam your favorite weapon system or have your entire army use a special deployment option. Can you make the unbeatable army? Challenge your friend to use a ‘take on all comers’ army vs your forces and see if it is your wits, your luck, or your army that can’t be beat. Players are also always actively encouraged to send a quick e-mail to Dave McLeod (DP9 game developer) to report on games and how players resolved any rules issues. Send E-mail to dave.mcleod@dp9.com (link sends e-mail).

If it’s a new edition why the same Heavy Gear Blitz name?: Heavy Gear blitz is a great name and nicely describes the situation, a fast combat game. Plus we can continue to use the same packaging without having to pass on the cost of re-packaging our whole line onto customers. Keeping our prices reasonable is important to us!

Why are the models in so many parts?: Heavy Gear models come in a lot of parts because they have very complex geometric shapes that can’t be cast in one piece without losing a lot of detail and all the pose-ability inherent in more parts. A small amount of super glue with a touch of extra putty where needed will quickly assemble most of the models. We are committed to a very high standard of quality in our casting and model design.

I hope this simple manifesto lays out some of the principals that guide the decision making process here at the pod."

Cheers!
Dave

That seems purposely broad yet focused. In other words, full of conflicting marketing speak. The only new thing I'm getting from that is the model count they expect from players (4-20 models per side) which is an important piece of info. That is roughly double the upper limit of what is playable with blitz in a reasonable time frame. Thanks for posting it and bumping my questions during the week over on the official forum.

Other news is pretty slim at this point, although I should be updating my blog with more pages concerning the rules. I've also been hearing quite a bit over on the Infinity forums that there might be some serious changes in 3rd edition, I'm just unsure of what those might entail. A lot of speculation running rampant, as usual.

I applaud your efforts but my enthusiasm for seeing real results has been significantly dimmed since this time last year when I basically stopped trying to do the same thing.

As for infinity, I don't know if you want youtube channels but the Beasts of War channel is doing an N3 week starting tomorrow with supposedly lots of info about the new rules, changes, and even two battle reports.

Mr. Dubois responded earlier on October 18 concerning individuals who wanted to ask about the Kickstarter with the following:

Heavy Gear Blitz War for Terra Nova – Core Starter Set - Kickstarter (Updated October 18th, 2014)

After reading the comments on the Forums, Facebook and by E-mail we have revised our plan and are now getting ready for the launch.

This plan is more condensed than the previous version. We will be limiting our scope to the North, South, and CEF factions for good reasons:
1) We already have a bunch of the required 3D models made which will speed up the process to molds.
2) North, South, and CEF models can be used in any faction as allies and are the iconic factions of the game.
3) This allows us to place a reliable delivery date of November 2015.

We have also amended our plan to give stretch goal rewards to all Core Starter Set Backers.

We believe that being an early supporter should be encouraged so we are setting our reward levels so that the early Core Starter Set Backers will get their rewards shipped out in the first wave. Sign up for the Core Starter Set early to lock in your shipping order and watch as stretch goals bolster your forces!

The basic goal of $27K CAD with this Kickstarter is to fund the molds required to make a high quality two player plastic Basic Starter Set of 16 miniatures, with 4 different models at the start.

But our desired goal is a Core Starter Set of 46 miniatures and color quick start rulebook, which will be accomplished by reaching the 13th stretch goal of $105K CAD. This would allow for a variety of eighteen different models from 4 factions in a Core Starter Set for two players, with a multiplayer option of up to four players.

Reaching all our stretch goals will allow us to give our Backers even more, with 52 miniatures, twenty-four different models, for the cost of the Core Starter Set..

All unlocked models will also be available at a special price for this Kickstarter to all backers as add-ons rewards for their pledges.

The Kickstarter will be going live the week of October 20th and we look forward to your support.

FAQ:
Why is the Kickstarter in $CAD?
Dream Pod 9 is based in Canada and Kickstarter requires its use for Canadian Kickstarters. The Core Starter Set’s price of $115 CAD is about $100 USD.

How will you ship Backer Rewards and what will be the shipping cost?
USA Backer Rewards will be shipped using US Post Priority Mail (2 to 3 day service) and will cost $15 CAD shipping.
Canadian Backer Rewards will be shipped using Canada Post Accelerated Service (2 to 7 day service) and will cost $15 CAD shipping.
International Backers will ship using US Post First Class International Package (2 to 3 week service), which allows packages of up to 4 lbs. The First Class International Package does not have tracking or insurance, the Backer by selecting this service accepts responsibility for that choice, once Dream Pod 9 ships the Reward Package it will have fulfilled its promise to the Backer, if the package gets lost in the mail Dream Pod 9 can‘t do anything more about it. Basic shipping cost for the War for Terra Nova – Basic Starter Set of just the 16 plastic miniatures and no other add-on will be $30 CAD ($26.10 USD). Basic shipping cost for the War for Terra Nova – Core Starter Set of 16 plastic miniatures plus stretch goal add-on and additional Backer Rewards up to 4 lbs total will be $50 CAD ($43.50USD). If the Backer Reward Package goes over 4 lbs, or the Backer requires Tracking then US Post Priority Mail International must be used and the extra costs will be charged to the Backer before shipping.
We have a $500 Pledge level that includes free shipping for USA, Canadian, and International Backers.

Do you have any partnerships with shipping forwarder in other countries to help reduce Custom taxes and duties on International Backer Rewards shipped?
No, not yet but we are talking to a company in Australia to see what we can do for our Australian Backers and to a company in the United Kingdom to see about helping out our European Backers. We’ll update everyone when we have good new to report.

Will the Quick Start Rulebook and New Edition Heavy Gear Blitz Core Rules (Living Rulebook) ebooks be available for free?
Yes, we will make the both of these ebooks available for free download to everyone and we also plan to give them each a print on demand option for players who want to purchase a printed book version.

What will the Quick Start Rulebook ebook include and how big will it be?
It will include a introduction to the Heavy Gear Universe, all the basic rules needed to play, with quick teaching scenarios to learn the rules while paying your first games, army list sections with introductions to the factions and armies included in the Core Starter Set, plus stats for all models included. The ebook will be from 64 to 106 pages, starting as a 64 pages and getting bigger as more Armies and Models are added to the Core Starter Box.

What will the New Edition Heavy Gear Blitz Core Rules ebook include and how big will it be?
It will have an introduction to the Heavy Gear Universe, all the basic and advanced rules, introduction and information on all the factions, plus army lists and models stats for all models released to date. It will be over 200 pages and will be a Living Rulebook to we can continue to improve and add to the game as needed. We plan on giving it a print on demand option for those who want to purchase a paper copy.

What stretch goal do you really want the Kickstarter to reach?
Our desired Stretch Goal would be #13 for $105K CAD, which would then include 46 minis with 18 different models from 4 factions in the Core Starter Set along with a printed color copy of the Quick Start Rulebook. We think that would make an amazing Core Start Set. But we hope it goes higher and we can get more molds made and give more rewards to our Backers.

Will there be a retail version of the Core Starter Set and how much will it cost?
Yes, we will have a Retail Basic Pledge level at the start with 6 copies of the Basic Starter Set of 16 miniatures for a $350 CAD pledge, with a SRP of $79.99 USD ($92 CAD) each.
If we reach stretch goal #13 a Retail Core Pledge Level with 6 copies of the new Core Starter Set Retail Version will become available for Retail Backers, with 46 minis and color quick start rulebook for a $500 CAD pledge, with a SRP of $114.99 USD ($132 CAD). It would not include any additional miniatures past those of stretch goal 13, that our normal backers would get.

What type of plastic do you plan on using!
We plan on using the high quality hard type plastic.

Will the models be pose able or fixed poses?
We are trying to make the models faster to put together and have a pose able option to them. Most of the models will be pose able with arms that the shoulders have balls with pegs on them to connect to the torso which will have a ball socket with hole in the bottom to accept the peg. Most of the model will tight fit together with pegs and holes, and if you want to pose the arms just cut off the plastic peg on the shoulder and glue it the way you want, the same for torso to hips connection. On some of the smaller models like the Cheetah and Iguana, this might not be possible, because the small size, but we will try. Hips will have square or rectangular holes in their underside to accept the similar shaped tabs for the legs. Some models will also include extra arms and legs to change up the poses even more. Only the heads, guns and missile pods will need to be glued on.

Any plans for an exclusive or limited edition plastic miniature for backers?
No plans for a limited edition plastic miniature just for Backers as making a mold for 1 model would cost a lot and we would not be able to use it afterwards. If we were to do something exclusive it would need to be in pewter.

Do Backers get anything exclusive to show that they supported the Heavy Gear Kickstarter?
Yes, we are making an exclusive Heavy Gear Blitz Backer 2014 Patch (4”x2”) which will be give to all Backers that pledge $65 CAD or more.

What is a MHT-95 Hovertank model?
The MHT-95 is a new medium sized hovertank with the following main gun options, Medium Railgun, Medium Artillery Gun and Heavy Grenade Launcher/Heavy Frag Canno. It was designed to fill a few areas in the CEF army we though could use some extra firepower.
What is an Acco mount model?
The Acco provides Caprice forces with a small agile trooper mount that can counter the numerical superiority of Terra Novan Armies.

Does Dream Pod 9 have plans for a full color rulebook?
Yes, we do plan on producing a full size Deluxe Edition Color Rulebook in the future and we promise to take the time to do it right, with top quality editing, before taking it to publication.

What are you going to do if you raise a lot money in pledges?
Get a few more molds made and get more models in to plastic. And we would hire more staff to get the all the rewards shipped out to Backers as fast as possible. Then we would bring on board additional writers, editors, and artists to get the Full Color New Edition Core Rules finished up as soon as possible and out for sale.

Does Dream Pod 9 have plans for other Kickstarters?
Only after we have shipped all of our Backer rewards for the first Kickstarter. Then will we consider another one, most likely to get the core models of Peace River, NuCoal, etc. into plastic as well.

Please help us get the word out, by sharing with friends and on social media.

Thank You for all your support.
