A few. I've done it with Fantasy minis, so I'd do it with 40k minis.
They are getting quickly out paced by competitors for the notion of "best" miniatures. They provide plastic kits with the most customization options, but they dropped the metal line for a terrible resin and are charging skirmish game pricing for a battle level game.

I enjoy the painting aspect of the hobby immensely. That said part of the enjoyment comes from people stopping to look and compliment my models. No point in continuing on if the game ceased to be played.

I enjoy modelling, and would just end up making a display case probably. Which would eventually get boring and I'd call it good.

Nope. I enjoy constructing armies, but without rules to play them, the time investment is too great for me to do it. Then I'm left just painting models because I like the models and want a display piece... there are very few models in GW's line up that are good enough for me to do that. GW's strength is nice looking armies, not nice looking individual models, there's other companies that do individual models much better.

I might buy some of their models secondhand if there were no game attached, but at the prices they charge? Forget about buying new.

This is a very confusing poll.. As the situation you pose just would not exist.. Even without official rules people will still play... Hell look at sub-games like blood bowl and necromunda.. The rules are old and many have tweaked them to suit themselves.. But many 3rd party companies thrive on selling models.. So the opposite of what you pose is more likely.. Yet no thought of this is in your question.

I think it's more a hypothetical if GW never made rules in the first place, simply had the models and universe, maybe video games and so on, with no actual table top game.
I think in that case, most of us wouldn't have even started GW games in the first place though.

Well, there's a book written to give you an excuse to line up your armies on a table alongside someone else who lines up their army on the other side of the table. The book then describes in a loose fashion a method in which you remove the models and put them back away over the course of several hours. "Game" might be too strong of a term

I wouldn't buy anywhere near as much and nowhere near as often.
But I did start up a Sisters of Battle collection when the foreseeable future didn't involve any tabletop gaming (had no one to play with and too much social anxiety to go out and play with strangers). So the lack of gaming opportunities won't stop me from getting models. It'll just reduce how much I get, and probably skew my collection more towards making forces to represent the custom factions of Sisters of Battle and Space Marines and Imperial Guard that I write fluff of.

I bought the models BEFORE I knew there was a game.
I don't play it anymore and at the prices they charge, I'm not buying any more.
I've bought models for the game I've never used (monolith and skyray) because I wanted the models not because I played the armies that used them.

No. I love seeing two well painted armies set up across from one another, that's probably the highlight of the hobby for me. But with no game there would be no incentive for me to drudge through my hours of painting.
So no, I'd ditch it.
It's already getting pretty bad, what with the bad rules. If it weren't for the fact that I find all of Infinity's factions bland, I would probably have shifted over to Infinity a long time ago. From what I can tell, the rules are so much better it's just shedding light on how poorly GW are handling their 40k ruleset.
... I thought I was gonna be able to do this post without it falling into a ramble about the 40k rules. I looked back at what I wrote and was like "well I'll be damned. Can't do it."

i've been hooked on Space Marines since the first "Beakie" box was released...
i buy the rulebooks for the art and fluff, but i don't play the game at all...
i would be sad to lose the rulebooks, but i would still be hooked on painting Marines...
every new box of Marine infantry, since the Wolves came out in 2009, has been an amazing leap forward for modellers...
the SW's, the BA's, the GK's, and now the basic Tac., Sterguard, and Vanguard boxes have made Marine modelling options almost limitless...
i don't think i will ever get sick of building and painting Marines...
i love a lot of other genres and companies, and i collect them too, but nothing makes me as happy as a single humble Space Marine...
cheers

This describes myself quite well. I like to build models, I like dabbling with green stuff (still new to that), I like to kit bash, and I enjoy playing narrative games. I also like having completed painted models. That said, I abhor the process getting to it and will frequently pay for others to get it done.
This.
There is literally no reason for me to buy models when there is no game, I'd still buy books and PC games though, since the fluff is pretty awesome.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

I have a problem with the idea that the company making the models controls the rules of the game, and changes them to get people to buy more models.
If there was a community driven attempt to write and maintain the rules, I would certainly buy the models to play the game and feel a little more 'clean' in doing so.

Nope. I buy the models so I can play the game. I assemble and paint the models so I can play the game. And truthfully, I'm losing interest in playing their current version of the game, so I'm not buying very many models. I used to build a new army every year, just for the GW US GTs. Well, when they quit holding GTs, I quit building a new army every year.

I buy the models for the game. If it was just on merit of "looks good on a shelf," I can find a lot of good-looking options that cost less. But while I do like how my models look when they're done (and do display them on shelves), I'm not really a modeler. I just assemble and paint figures to play the game. If I didn't think something was useful in the game, I'd skip buying it. The new Flash Gitz look great, but since I likely won't use them in a game any time soon, I'm skipping them for now.

I would, but far less. I just love making nice conversions, and GW models are by far the best for that. I would also be likely to buy more WHFB instead of 40k, since I could just continue playing using KoW rules. I think this forum, Dakkadakka can be the comunity to established non FOTM bias rules because Dakka gets so many members every day! However i have so much hate for both GW and Dakka so i wont be contributing. Excuse me if that came off as rude or inflamatory but its just the bickering i have encountered on this site for over several years of posting has just left me so embittered.

Not as Good as a Minion
|
I always used the models I liked most with the rules I like most.
So nothing would change as I use my Space Wolves for other SciFi Games, my Avatars of War Dwarfs do well in Kings of War and some Warhammer minis make nice Mercs for Warmachine.
And if I play 40k, not all of my models are from GW.
The same like my Bolt Action minis are not all from Warlord Games.
I can understand that people like to buy the models from the same company as they get the rules from, but me coming from the historical part of the game, it is a little bit strange do so (I would never buy a model I don't like just because the rules say I need it. There is always a way to get an alternative).
