I read something to the effect that they did have video footage of the test unit. . . but the projector ate it when they tried to play it for the crew
So Major Tom Ferebee (who was present for the test) described it to them, and apparently quite evocatively too.
Tibbets knew it was a nuclear weapon, but the rest didn't. They knew it was a nightmare, just not if it was a "Chemist's nightmare" or a "Physicist's nightmare"
Enola Gay was the name of Tibbets mother
Silver Plate was the codeword used in the Manhattan project for requisition
That early in the nuclear age, pretty much no one really knew or understood the implications of dropping the bomb, at least when it came to the human suffering it caused. Heck when they did the first test bomb, some of the scientists thought it would not work or the bomb would destroy the world.

Well... today is the anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, with Nagasaki following three days later, and the surrender of Japan on August 15, 1945.
This is an intriguing time of our history.
One thing I've always found powerful is that, one of Japan’s highest wartime officials, Kido Koichi, later testified that in his view the August surrender prevented 20 million Japanese casualties.

Subject: Last member of the Enola Gay crew dies aged 93
Going slightly OT here, but has anyone read the old manga "Barefoot Gen"? It is an autobiographical account of a young boy surviving the Hiroshima bomb. I've read the first few volumes and it's pretty powerful stuff.
