Are loyalists the only ones who get to deep strike half their army on turn one for just 35 points per unit, with minimal risk ?

50% of drop pods auto arrive turn 1 - no rolls necessary. They're also really difficult to mishap.

Just watch out for Coteaz... He's been expecting you.

Bu- Bu- But I'm the Spanish Inquisition! NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION! (except CREEEEEEED!)

On topic: Basically what I quoted. Just remember the pods are reduce, not "move".
*sigh*
The amount of people that don't get that is kinda irritating (understandable for new players though).

I'm painting 9 space wolf drop pods currently. Just for the tears.
I'm going to start never rolling for going first unless my opponent loses then ill roll to make him go first lol. My razorback, rhino, and land raiders will never be loaded up again. My sisters army is un packed now so I can just run 5 mansquads with 2 heavy weapons in pods not having to buy the others to get extra heavy weapons. O the meltas and flamers will be crying tears of wtf is this crap.

I'm away from my rulebook atm but when 'turn' is written, doesn't that mean player turn and not game turn? I'm pretty certain it says this in the beginning of the rulebook so if I'm right, keeping everything in reserves will make you instantly lose about half of your games

You're right that turn is player turn, but the rules for losing the game mention game turn.

Can you guys clarify this instance:

I play a full reserve Nid army VS a full drop pod army.
I choose to go second.
He deploys half his pods turn 1.
I cannot deploy anything t1 since Im full reserve.
I lose the game at end of t1?

I only ask because under a thread in the tactics section people were saying the best defense Vs a pod army was going second using reserves.

You are correct, you would lose at the end of game turn 1. Perhaps they meant putting "valuable" units in reserve and having fodder on the table that won't get wiped in one turn.
Or don't believe everything you read on the internet.

If you have nothing on the table at the end of any game turn, you automatically lose. I'm not sure what kind of tactic that would have you automatically lose.

Hmmm quick question about interceptor.

When Draigo does Gate of Infinity and it says it follows the deepstrike rules; that DOES make it vulnerable to interceptor right?

Interceptor is clear on who you can shoot at.

Check the Interceptor rules in the Special Rules chapter, Interceptor section, 1st sentence.

Yup, only imperial armies can do 100% reserve forces:

~ Drop Pod assault (All loyalist space marines except grey knights)
~ Combat Drop (Elysian Drop Troops)

are garuanteed 50% of their pods/valkyries to arrive turn 1

~ Nemesis Strike Force (grey knights)
~ Strike Force Ultra (Codex space marines)

can roll reserves from turn 1 (so on average get more troops but it's risky)

~ Deathwing Assault

The king of deep striking cheesery, the entire army arrives by deep strike turn 1 without rolling for reserves, and counts its guns as twin-linked the turn it does so into the bargain.

I wonder how you're supposed to handle all that bs though.

I mean, it's almost as if they had auto-hit weapons that ignore the movement and deployment phase.

How do you handle it? DS is too random, with most forces that use it wanting to land close to you, as they are assault heavy, but that then increases the chance of them being destroyed entirely, without you doing anything.

There are many strategies to mitigate this risk, from castling to spreading out.

Actually Drop pods are far from random, the units that get those pods are cheaper than their targets, there is not enough room on a 40K board to spread a mech, and fusion doesn't really care if it's your front armor.

Other than that, yes I know there are ways to deal with it, I just find it a bit curious that some units in 40K cannot be countered.

No matter what I do, I cannot prevent one pod from landing in fusion range and smashing my tank.

I agree that smart positioning can reduce the number of tanks that can be targeted etc., but it still amazes me that some units don't have to risk a real deep strike yet get a free shot at their enemy no matter what.

Note I said "DS", and not "drop pods DS" - Deathwing most certainly want to hit combat, yet have no protection from mishap. Ditto GK.

How do you mean there isnt enough room to spread? Against pods, which usually then have slow moving, PA models, you dont need to spread too much. What you can do is make it impossible for them to be in melta / fusion armourbane range by placement of troops around your vehicles.

By "cannot be countered", you mean "can easily be countered" - for example, you havent even mentioned interceptor yet.

Then it makes a lot more sense.

Are there many interceptors outside of codex: Tau ?
