I only have one army for 40K, but I also have WWII Germans and Russians, a Terran Alliance Fleet for Firestorm Armada, Rebels and Imperials for X Wing, and Ariadna for Infinity. I feel your pain.

When you run out of space, then you have too many. But that's what renting storage units is for.... More space!

How much money do you have to spend?

Personally I think 3 is my number for how many armies I should have. They let me play the game from various different aspects. Plus if one of them is a marine army, you can always just use a different codex!

I actually ran out of space 2 years ago. Then I got into a great deal with my regular store - paid for 2 racks of shelves and I've got 4 of my armies on display there, thus freeing up some space at home. And space for more armies (I think it was an EW and a LW 15mm Germans). Of course, the secret is to make sure the wife doesn't realize all this

lol, that's why the game store here rents lockers. There's also a display case of nothing but titans and such. Really, I don't think there's a thing as too much as long as you're not like me and actually have at least assembled everything you buy, lol.

In my opinion, as many as you like, so long as you can put the time and effort in to paint them, or pay extra to get them commissioned.

As some others have said, when you feel that you have too many. The main part of the hobby for me is the collecting and painting aspect, although I am also getting into the gaming side as well! So personally I would like a nice range of armies, not only because each one models differently etc, but also because It means a variety when playing them to.

Storage of said armies may also be a factor, although for me I'm ignoring that until it becomes an issue

Good advice from everyone, really my biggest concern is having to many armies where one will constantly just sit on the shelf and never see the gaming table.

19th Krieg Siege Army 7500pts.
40k/HH Night Lords 5000pts.
Orks Waaaghmacht Spearhead 2500pts.

Nonsense! Just keep your army within many force organisations.

I have enough force organisation named armies for 'fast attacker', 'defender', 'Tank hunter', and ' fort holder' for my blood angel alone.

In this way you will use every single model per games match.

I have Tau, Lizardmen, High elves, dwarves, skaven, vampire counts. there really is no such thing as too much, if you like them , and arent putting yourself into debt getting them, then by all means go for it. variety is the spice of warhammer..... adn life i suppose.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

If you love building and painting them then you can never have too many armies. But if you feel bad because you have armies thaat might sit in their box for a year cause you haven't got around to playing them then that might be a problem.

I have the following armies:
Space Marines (run as normal SM, BA, or DA)
Tau
Eldar
Orks
CSM
Necrons
IG

And I have sold an entire Nids army to a friend, and he sold that army to another friend who ended up being my roommate. So imagine my surprise when I saw my old Nid army sitting in my house.

I do not remember the last time I played my SM or Necrons. I am getting rid of the CSM cause I haven't played them at all. I loved building these armies and I love the fact that I can just decide to make up a Necron list out of the blue and go play a game and I can go and play Tau the next week.

But there are problems with it as well. You will spend a LOT of money. Models and bits will be everywhere, and you will most likely never come close to mastering an army.

GW - If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

In my opinion: When your other armies lack attention.
To me that means when I am forced to play (roughly) the same list every time with an army.

I see that especially when people have a lot of 2k-armies.
To me that reads as "I play the same 1850 list every single time" and I would absolutely hate it if I had the same stuff every game.
That's why I "only" have around 15k Necrons and 6k Blood Angels (guesstimated).

That is my biggest worry to be honest, don't want an army that will sit collecting dust and spend all that money on it for nothing. I probably will be "starting" to expand my 40k armies to 3000pts. each, knock out a Fantasy army and then potentially raise both armies to 5000pts. each.

19th Krieg Siege Army 7500pts.
40k/HH Night Lords 5000pts.
Orks Waaaghmacht Spearhead 2500pts.
