I don't think minimum wage should be raised to a living wage, as it really would just feth up inflation and force greasy business owners to think of other ways to feth their employees, thus not actually solving the problem.

Yeah. The only way for it to work would require drastic power sweep and control of the economy while it adjusts, which I doubt the US government is competent enough to do, or that the US population is willing to accept.

So, not gonna happen.

Being a year off from having to live off my own money, I say increase it! HOWEVER. more than doubling it is asking a bit much.

And yes. I could probably live off of 15k a year. I could pay rent to my Mom and stay at home, meaning that some other things would be auto-provided (electricity, some food, heat, a very good computer... etc)

So I would say increase it to like $10. And yeah, Hotsauceman, living in Cali is more expensive that living in a lot of other places

San Franciscan here.

It sucks.

I work security for an apartment complex in Oakland (the ghetto, less glorious little brother to San Francisco, 15 minute drive apart), and the rent is 2500 for a one-bedroom unit and 3100 for a two-bedroom unit.

The three bedroom upper-half of a duplex I used to live in was 1550 a month, with the third bedroom being little bigger than the average bathroom. lol

Maybe not if you like expensive booze and fancy cars. I could live of half that easily most parts of the US.

Indeed. It would be plenty for a single person anywhere, and probably a couple with maybe 1 kid in certain areas.

The idea of a living wage is silly, because what you need to "live" is entirely dependent on individual circumstances.

Are you married? How many kids? Do you have a car? is it paid off? mortgage? are you including things like cable and anything beyond a basic cell phone plan?

Its impossible to have a blanket wage of X that is supposed to be a "living wage" because what would be necessary for one person would be excessive for another. And picking one over the other just makes you a hypocrite.

Yeah, the whole Vlad/Katherine thing was weird when you thought about it too much.

I didn't say it was a good idea, just said what it is

But really, if we're talking about people being replaced by machines, that'll happen anyway. The moment someone puts together a machine that puts a burger together, they'll all be out of work because you don't need HR, health benefits, or all the employee drama tolerance, with a machine.

If they get paid more now it's not really going to change the eventual fate of the business model.

Exactly.

They're gonna replace normal 8-10 man staff with 2 man staff. And those 2 guys sole job will be to service the machines, and fix anything the machine messes up. They'll probably get paid 50k with benefits because it'll take some real skill to service the machine.

So congratulations strikers. You've successfully made fast food a Middle Class occupation, but you've unemployed 90% of the workforce(probably more since the people working there now are unlikely to be qualified to service the machines)

Let's just nip the "waaaah you'll force the Machines on us by not allowing yourself to be taken advantage of by corporations!" idea in the bud right now.

Low-skilled workers being replaced with machines is happening inevitably. Whether people go on strike or don't, or accept their $7/hour wages or don't, automation of most of our workforce is going to happen anyway.
