The reason I has the clay shapers and milliput is because of my U-boat project. Milliput is really easy to smooth into large flat surfaces with clay shapers and it sands just like body filler.

Ah, well. Preaching to the choir, then. (I know what you mean about moving down the smaller scales; I have the same doubts about magic sculp etc. And I should really go about typing a single, linkable waffle...)

I have tried using various garage items but they are all to unwieldy or covered in oil. I need something curved and flat.

I'm not sure in what way the items are unwieldy - heads? handles? - but the former can be surprisingly easy to modify. I once used plain needle files and a bit of fine sandpaper to grind down my first GW sculpting tool, a thing at least as chunky as a screwdriver or a nail. Granted, it took an hour or three, but I managed to shape, smooth and sharpen it to a degree that I still use it today. Not that I'm saying going obsessive on a lump of steel is the best solution, but it's a stopgap suggestion, until the hobby budget is opened up again.

(Also, sorry for hijacking the place!)

I'm loving these. I always thought that the SM models looked a bit like gorillas, which really bothered me, especially as a BA player, since they are supposed to be regal and beautiful and whatnot (at least more so than some other chapters). I love the leaner look the models get when they get a little taller. I may have to cut up a model to experiment on. As terrifying as it sounds, my Chapter Master could really use some extra height to make him more imposing on the battlefield.

This project is so slow going lol Still havent painted the plasma rifle guy.

I have however spotted in my travels some of scibor miniatures Roman legionaries I might have to get one so i can compare proportions. If you take a look at the chest armour it gives a better idea of what I have been trying to achieve
