Thinking the producer(s) might have actually grown up with both version. Watching it on TV and playing it on table top (I can only HOPE)

I am really excited about a macross movie. I'm not even a huge fan of the anime, but I'd love to see those mechs in a proper live action setting.
That DiCaprio is involved is even better. Having one of the great contemporary screen actors onboard could bring some real depth to the project.

Did Robot jox even use CGI? I thought it was all just models , stop motion, and analog visual effects tricks.
You kids today with your CGI…..

All kidding aside just like a lot of other remakes of movies/TV that are two decades or more older many of us that liked the original aren't really the target audience at this point. If you watched it in the 80's-90's you probably aren't in the coveted 16-24 demographic. Don't get me wrong they want our money too, but we aren't the driving customer. Like anything I don't care if it is a bit different if it is done well. If I want to watch the originals, or even the Japanese originals, I can still do that. There being a new iteration doesn't get rid of the others.

Well said.
I think if they just capture the battle of Macrosse Island on screen then I am happy.

I can see a trilogy being done
All depends on how profitable the first movie is. Looking at early teens to early 50's target audience being majority adults grew up on the cartoons, later the table top BattleTech, and the release of Robotech RPG Tactic
I can see three sets of trilogy being done
Maybe four sets
