It shouldn't come as a surprise that Disney and Lucasfilm have been going after big name actors to star in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII. We recently learned that Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron are being considered for parts, but they aren't the only ones the studio has sought.
According to Latino-Review, the studio also wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to star in the film. He turned it down so that he could focus his attention on Robotech instead! I've been waiting for a live-action Robotech movie for years! The last thing we heard was that commercial director Nic Mathieu would be developing it with producers Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire.
If he turned down Star Wars for Robotech, then I assume he's already committed to the big screen adaption of the classic '80s anime series. It makes sense that he would choose this over Star Wars. It just ยป

Ambivalent about DiCaprio being in it, but the prospect of a live-action Robotech is kind of awesome.

With Pacific Rim making mecha look realistic and awesome on the big screen I am pretty excited for the possibility of a Robotech movie (even though it is a stinky Robotech movie and not the more superior Battletech movie I have always wanted ).

You two want to make me cry right? Digging my old mechs from storage and painting them has made an imposible task avoiding completing the ranks to full batallion.

Robotech was an 3 anime's cut together Macross, Mospeada and Southern Cross.
I would be interested if they have a good script and director. I have seen too many western versions of eastern animation or manga's that were horrendous.

It was one of the first animes to make it over to broadcast TV and so a lot of kids grew up with it during the 80's, like Transformers and GI Joe. The big thing (initially) are the Veritech Fighters, which were planes that could become robots, or something in between.

But those articles are from more than a year ago, right? Let's see if it actually happens.
And what character would Leo be playing? Roy Fokker, perhaps?

Um...he's 6 feet tall, making him practically a giant in Hollywood. He's also about 40 years old. He wouldn't be Rick or Max simply based on age, unless those characters dramatically changed. And he'd be a much better Rick than Max even if that was the case.
Seriously, have you seen him in anything since Titanic?

He would be a good Fokker. He's pushing age enough to be a good Admiral Gloval.
Alternatively - Khyron.

Seen him in quite a few things, actually. I still say he's too short for Roy. Roy was over 6' tall (as was Gloval) and was a hair taller than Ben Dixon (who was far from a midget). Even when he was playing a South African mercenary, I didn't get the feeling DiCaprio was the tallest guy in the room. As for age, when has anyone in Hollywood been cast age-appropriately? We have people in their mid 20s playing 16 year olds and people in their 40s playing people in their 20s.
....though he might make a pretty decent Khyron, as somebody suggested.

Hollywood magic can make you 2 or 3 inches taller. Tom Cruise is 5'7. Daniel Radcliffe is 5'5. Elijah Wood is 5'6. James McAvoy 5'7. Al Pacino 5'7. Danny Trejo 5'6. The 'short actor' list goes on and on.
DiCaprio is pretty tall for an actor, and 'tall' is hardly the most important criteria in what you're looking for in a Roy Fokker anyway. You need someone who could pull off a dashing flying ace, which he could do. He could also be bad-a** enough to pull off a Khyron.
He's about 15-20 years too old for a traditional Rick or Max -- it's not like a 25 year old playing an 18 year old.

Making someone look taller/shorter is what they do. Tom Hardy isn't all that tall but if you only go by Bane in Dark Knight Rises you'd think he was quite large. The SDF-1 probably won't be real either, which is a shame.
