with my Tau I don't because the stems keep breaking inside of the model and become a pain in the ass. I bring them along, but they don't last long. In bigger games I bring them and use them because I like the height.
With my Dark Eldar I use the bases as much as I can, even glue them in, the models are already a pain in the butt to transport so this isn't a huge deal as they're also the ball topped ones. I can't rest them down like my Devilfish Chassis because of the pointy bits underneath.

First thing I do with a plastic stem is replace it with a 1.5mm copper rod. Available cheap from all good hobby shops.

Its also fairly easy to magnetize the hover base. If i were running an official tournament I would require the flying base, because as you have pointed out it's a part of the rules

Just drill the hole a bit bigger in the model so that when you put the model on the base, it wedges onto the tapered main stem rather than the little breakable bit at the top.
Your model sits a couple of mm lower, but just use the long stem and wedge it on tight and it won't spin or fall off when you're moving it.
No complex magnets required!

On the other hand, it's a pain in the ass every single time you need to remove the stem from the model.
Magnets are extremely simple, cheap, available off ebay and just a lot more relaxing to use.

Meh, I play against my cousin who runs Tau and sometimes the bases are missing or are broken, I know it'll happen to my Eldar eventually. As far as I see it, he plays on the ground then his LOS is lower on me as it is for me on him. I kinda think it balances out in the end...

Skimmers I have no issue with out base like many on here hold them with needed for Los.
But has less dread is some hard core bs me n my friends allow stupid things to represent a model but all things must b bases n to at least same size as for fairness mind you rhinos do not pass for land raiders but I could see the jet bike even bing a problem with cover hugging

Most vehicles don't actually need bases at all.
Once again, the rulebook even specifically tells us what to do with walkers that aren't based.
There is absolutely no problem, rules-wise, with fielding a dreadnought without a base if it didn't come with one.

I keep mine based, but I have no quarrel with anyone who doesn't keep them on bases (and is not obviously trying to cheat).
Flying bases for skimmers are pretty terribly designed so I understand.

Skimmer bases can be a pain, they are pretty terribly designed in general. With my Tau i got so sick of the things breaking i jest took them off and since the models have landing gear in the down position, i use them like that. no-one i have played against has batted an eye. Its useful to have one or more bases available if you do that so you can raise the models up to their 'proper' height if an opponent requests it, but thats pretty much the same as asking you to lift it up a few inches to determine LOS when required.
As to the dreadnaught. originally they came with no bases, and if you look through old WD's you can see them both without bases, and on 40mm square bases, some even on 2 40mm square bases so the things didn't fall over all the time.
generally speaking a model is 'legal' if it uses the base it came with, so old terminators on 25mm bases are still legal, even if most people replaced the bases with 40mm ones.
That being said, i think the general consensus is that models should be based on the 'current' base size, to make it fair for everyone. I think people may get a bit irritated if you didn't put the base on the current plastic dreads even though historically they didn't have any. although, i can't actually remember if the original RT dread came with a base or not

@OP:
Regarding the dread, I would say bring him a dread base that you made out of cardboard and some blue tac. Keep it with your army so you can let him "borrow it" until he gets his own.
Regarding the serpents. Tell him if he's going to play that they get area terrain cover because a piece of them is in terrain, they need to make dangerous terrain tests per the rules. If he's keeping them out of LOS without a base, same with the dread. Make an appropriately sized cardboard base (a cut toilet paper tube would be fine). That would elevate it to the proper game height.
Refusal would be met with escalation of modeling for advantage on your side. Super crouched troops, MCs, base placement shenanigans. Etc. That's extreme but you get the drift.
I hate those gakky bases too. Same with my tau. Gear down. If it mattered for game play... HIWPI ... as if it had appropriate base erring on the side of my opponent who's letting me play with an illegal model.

That is not, and has never been, the general consensus. Most players honestly don't care, so long as the base looks appropriate to the model. Very few players memorise what size base each and every model in the game is supplied on.

Yep, this weekend I have a 24 hour painting event and one of the guys and I are just going to get as many skimmer bases/magnets as we can and are going to magnetize a bunch of bases/Skimmers.
