Wondering Why the Emperor Left

Toledo, Ohio

I think the way he went out was awesome, as much as I would like him to come back and reek havoc in the 41st I think it would cheapen how much of a bad mofo he was when he died.

How? He's a guy who said he repented. Does that make him a traitor?

There was no repentance from Konrad Curze. He allowed himself to be killed because it vindicated him, it showed the galaxy that the Emperor was just as bad as he was.

One thing that was never made clear was if Curze sold his soul to the Chaos Gods. If he did sell it to them, would it mean they could revive him if they wanted to?

He was most certainly Chaos at the end, even if he didn't acknowledge it. The whole "I live in a flesh sculpted castle made of living people" kinda implies chaos magics, not to mention that he became mutated and disheveled.

He didn't accept it like many of his brothers did, but through his actions and deeds it seeped into him. Reading through The Unremembered Empire you can get a feel of the changes being wrought upon him. He is starting to quite literally become a creature of fear and shadow. The visions that were once a curse, seem to have become more of a blessing.

Index Astartes: Night Lords
The last words of Night Haunter stand as one of the great enigmas of Imperial history. It is thought that the assassin M'Shen was consciously allowed to infiltrate Night Haunter's grotesque palace on the world of Tsagualsa, an edifice constructed entirely from still-living bodies. Expecting to have to deal with numerous guards and loyal retainers, she was surprised to find the halls of bone and flesh completely deserted. The vid-log built into M'Shen's baroque vambraces, kept in stasis at the heart ot the most venerated Callidus shrine, shows the final confrontation between the twisted Primarch and the avenging angel. The events are portrayed thus:

Sitting in a pool of shadow upon a throne made from the fused bones of his victims, a carpet of still-screaming faces leading up to gnarled, naked feet, sits Night Haunter himself. His madness and hate radiate from him, palpable even through such a remote medium as a vid-log. M'Shen stops in her tracks when the fallen Primarch raises his head, her face reflected in the impassive, deep black pools of his eyes. Long moments pass. Then, in a voice thick with contempt and pain, Night Haunter speaks.

"Your presence does not surprise me, Assassin. I have known of you ever since your craft entered the Eastern Fringes. Why did I not have you killed? Because your mission and the act you are about to commit proves the truth of all I have ever said or done. I merely punished those who had wronged, just as your false Emperor now seeks to punish me. Death is nothing compared to vindication."

Could that just be a reflection of his tastes? Psykers that were not corrupted by Chaos could mutate flesh as well.

If those are his tastes, he's gone into full-on Slaaneshi thralldom, 'cause that's some perverse gak.

Kurze hated his homeplanet. And he bombed it into oblivion without hesitation as soon as he felt it was needed. Kurze hated his legion. And he wasn't very secretive about it. And in the end, Kurze hated himself and what he had become - that's why he allowed himself to get killed. But i don't think that it was a no-reason-black-metal-teenage hate. He had his own very strong uncompromising sence of judgement. Even to himself.

And about the video and potential of him being alive - it's probably just to maintain some sort of mistery and hope against all odds. Have you read For Whom The Bell Tolls?

Yeah, but being wounded and bleeding like in For Whom the Bell Tolls isn't a death sentence. IIRC there was even one pilot in WWI who crashed into a blimp or something, blew up his plane, but jumped out and slid down the rope tethering it to the ground and survived. Or the guy in Korea who got shot multiple times yet fought off an entire platoon of enemy troops with just an E-Tool and crutch.

But being decapitated is a death sentence. A very finite one that's hard to weasel out of.

IIRC the decapitation thing is in another book. So, i was pointing out that while the survival is 'possible' it'd totally go against what's the book about.
