It's trivial to empty a hardback book of pages, and to print off convincing copies.
All it needs is access to a good quality printer, good paper and a guillotine to trim the edges. Once the book has been scanned, copy and paste the words you want where you want them, and hit 'Print'.
iBooks are fairly difficult to falsify, but .Pub files and similar are easy.
Don't trust paper as being gospel

as people have been forging books for centuries.
