Say a codex releases in January. You buy it. It has some errors that are fixed by the February FAQ.

Months pass and some other player wants to start that army in August. So he ends up buying the codex in September.

By this time the original faulty printing run should have all been sold and GW should have already started its second, third or fourth batch.

Do these later batches have the FAQ incorporated into them or are they just as faulty as the primary batch that came out on release day?

The reason for my question is twofold: one, I usually get my codexes on release day and two, I had read in GW FAQ/errata somewhere where they mentioned that they update their books...

As a rule, no.

They've updated codexes a few times in the past. Sometimes they've even told their customers that they were doing it.

Last time that I'm aware of was in 3rd edition, though.

The digital codexes do get updated. The updates don't always match the current FAQs.

Also, i think your timetable of an faq is optimistic. If they'd released an faq for the january codex by september, i'd say they were moving pretty quickly.

Sadly, the codexes (codices?) need an FAQ the day they come out. I would expect a little more from a $50, <100 page book...

Yeah, an FAQ on release and someone with a spellcheck on hand before they go to print. The 6th and 7th ed. codices that i've read were full of spelling errors.

I don't think that GW will update any codex ever again, they'll probably just release a new one for the next edition. There are about 15-ish or so main armies and a handfull of fun-sized ones such as knights, inquisition, assasins, scions etc.
That means they can re-release the whole range in about 1,5-2 years. So if your original print lasts you for 15-16 months you can completely avoid making updates and just release the new dex for the next edition.

Practically every one has an overwhelming portion as historical fluff (Imperial Knights is the worst.. with something like 6-7 pages of content?). Other than Space Marines, I feel the actual, non-fluff gaming material in each codex is tiny -- in fact, they could condense all of the codexes into a 3 volume deal, for gaming purposes, and then sell the fluff bits as separate books. That would make me so happy (and I would even buy the fluff books), but I know it'll never happen.

But seriously, do you really need to take the history of the White Scars and eighty pages of "this is the color scheme for this house and they are the successor chapter of zzzzz..." with you to every game? :(

Insaniak - they reprinted the 4th ed ork dex from memory. Changing number of war biker wounds to two, from the in error 1, but also then giving all war bikers two wounds.....

Considering the price of the models and the time invested I have zero sympathy for people who don't check the FAQs before-hand.

After which FAQ? The first FAQ? or the FAQ after the original FAQ? Or the FAQ amendment of the third FAQ?

Maybe the FAQ of the FAQ's FAQ

Really, who gives an FAQ if you can just print it out rather than buying a new book each time.

Ok there's faq page after all but wait it not on gw site so its more made up bs. When the put FAQs page up on gw site under 40k part then all believe faq as of now if its in codex i playing it that way so yes my brother runs missile drones with missilesides because its legal in codex

You can choose to play it that way and as long as your both ok with it that's fine, and if you go to a tournament or a game day somewhere expect other people to object.

It was a bit of an odd choice to move the FAQs to the site for all of their books rather than the main GW site but black library is a part of GW so it's not like its a 3rd party site or anything.

No, it's BS because the FAQs are hidden away on a total separate website that a lot of players don't even know exists. GW really ought to put the FAQ on the product page of their own damn website, instead of trying to hide away their mistakes.

Doesn't seem like an odd choice to me. If I were GW and sold a luxury hobby to people, I wouldn't want to sugest that there maybe something wrong with it.
Only people that can find the faq, are those who know they already existed, so no new gamers , no parents buying stuff , no people who aren't interested in the fluff of the game etc.

They do not print them in paper, so there is no printed paper proof(other than someone printing the PDF file, which is exactly what an offical printed one would be) that way and most likely never will be, the most you will get for proof is the fact that the website has a note saying Black Library is a division of Games Workshop.

Best proof you can do is email GW and ask if the FAQs on black library are GWs or a third party.

It's at the bottom of the main page of games workshop's website under "Rules Errata". It forwards to Black library:

http://www.blacklibrary.com/faqs-and-errata.html

If you doubt that it's official, go to www.games-workshop.com, scroll to the bottom, and look and click the link. Besides, it says: "These documents bring the print editions up to date with any recent rules or amends to their digital edition."

You can get one file that has everything, and there are updates as recently as a few weeks ago.

However, that being said, most of the errata sheets contain nothing or very little useful information on them. Like, most of it, is a quarter page that says "We try really hard but some times errors get in".

Loving the distrust of Black Library and the FAQs there. Everyone should be careful with them, Black Library are notorious for ruining and cheating in 40K

Something tells me you dont go to competitive events.

And if you really do, and the FAQ conflicting with your armylist isnt something minor like what-happens-in-some-situational-happenstance-like-some-psychic-phase, then:

...also if you happen to play against, say, an Eldar player, and he suddenly uses his Farseer to summon some daemons and you start to object because nowhere in the Eldar codex does it say that Farseers have access to the malefic Daemonology discipline.

Talys is right, just scroll to the bottom of the main GW site:

They're going to find out soon enough.

Better to have the best possible fix in place than to try to pretend that everything is fine.

And when do they find out about it? not when they play against this one or two opponents that started w40k with them. They get to know the ETC rules pack, FAQ , this community plays this way, when they have a full army and go to a store or club for a pick up game. And offten they suddenly realise that what they bought is not the thing they would have wanted. Of course by then they have 1500pts of stuff bought from GW and if they are desperate or unlucky enough with the initial models pick, they may start to fix their army spending even more money.

Much better for sells then people going off and buying the 1500pts of what they need to play an army and be done with it. You know like in other game systems.

Have you tried.....oh, I don't know....typing; "Warhammer 40K FAQ" into Google?

I know you enjoy whining and complaining, but do you ever try some of the obvious solutions before you do so?

So download them from Where GW provides them and print any that are relevant to you or have a stored in a digital format that you know is from a legitimate source(black library), or don' and play without the full rules. Hopefully it doesn't bite you in the end.
