You have permission to take items in general. From that list you may take one. There's only one way to satisfy both rules.

"A model can take one of the following" can be read both ways though: List contains A,B,C,...

A model can take one of A,
A model can take one of B,
A model can take one of C,
etc

or

A model can take one of the following list (only one from the whole list)

Ed: (As opposed from, "can take 2 of A, 2 of B, etc)

It's like you take a Space Marine and say "what could make him cooler?" Instead of adding more super-genetic-psycho-organic modification, you take it all away. You have a regular human left in power armor and all the armies of hell at the gates. And she doesn't even flinch. Pure. Badass.

No it really can't. I can understand that space marine wording might imply one for one instead of just one, but this is crystal clear; it means just one.

BTW, I hope GW would adopt a uniform approach with this; either everyone gets multiple relics or no one does. This rule being randomly worded differently in different codices makes no sense at all.

I've just gone through all the codicies (except the new BA codex). Here are my findings.
Adepta Sororitas, Dark Eldar, Grey Knights, Inquisition, and Orks, all have a specified limit of one relic per model.
Astra Militarum, and Tau Empires have no restrictions on the number of relics a model can take.
It is impossible for Chaos Daemons to take more than one relic per model, and Legion of the Damned/Imperial Knights do not have a relics list.
Chaos Space Marines, Dark Angels, and Space Marines are all worded the same.
Tyranids can replace any set of scything talons.
Eldar while worded the same as Space Marines, implies that models can take multiple items.
As such, only 2 codices definitely allow 2+ relics, one is possible based on interpretation (Tyranids), and one implies it is legal with the same wording as most other 6th edition codices.

To mess this up even more: Blood Angels went back to the unclear wording.
"Only one of each Relic of Baal may be taken per army. A model may replace one weapon with one of the following:"

I really don't get what they are trying to do.
At first I thought they were specified more clearly because you have to replace a specific weapon (melee or ranged).
But Dark Eldar have an asterisk with "Replaces a model's ranged or Melee weapon."
Now with the BA they go back to the vague wording for no reason at all, unless the intent is to have a model take multiple Relics.

Yep. If you want to limit a model to one relic, and some of them to replace an existing weapon, then the Dark Eldar wording is a sane way to do it. Wording that exist in all marine codices is just bizarre.

The wording is terrible in that it can be ambiguous. Ambiguity is a terrible trait for a rule set.

Only if you add "each" would that initial interpretation be possible.
