JJ's column always read something akin to:

"My opinion is law! Bow down mortals!"

"No you're doing it wrong!"

"Stop disagreeing!"

"When does my contract end again?"

JJ himself (and most of his writing) is pretty good however.

His column was boring like hell.
One thousand words and no content.

I enjoyed meeting Andy Chambers, Fat Bloke, Jervis J and hanging out with the Forge World guys. I've written one or two before, down to Earth was Dave Andrews who makes amazing things for GW. I've enjoyed the game since Rogue Trader. Been through loads of changes and I'm still entertained with the hobby, and the game. Those guys were always eager to answer questions, even saw a note pad and pen come out during long discussions over kits, possible kits, or rules.

Man I am really disappointed at all the hate here.

I emailed GW earlier this year about the need to clarify and errata some rules regarding the Dark Angels Powerfield Generator -wargear item. Think its now 3 months ago.

I got a short formal response that they will look into it. It was updated less than a monthg ago iirc, regarding the very thing I asked about. Dunno if my email had anything to do with it but hey, atleast it happened.

Not a bad response.
The power field generator is debatable but not everybody would agree that is needs a change.
So these kind of inquiries are itself debatable.

@Kelly502.
The thing is all the people I/we used to write to at GW towers, in the 1990s have moved to pastures new.
Rick Priestley, Alessio, Andy C. Paul Sawyer, Jake Thornton, et all.

Only Jervis is left at GW towers. And he is just hanging on to his job the only way he can.(A nice bloke in a bad situation.IMO.)

All the great gaming experiences have moved to the companies set up and or populated by EX GW employees.(Warlord , Mantic, etc)

There is no 'hate' for GW . Just massive disappointment at the way the current management has thrown away the good work of the studio that took decades to build up.

Most people find the art and background of 40k inspiring.
Its just the majority of people would like a good rule set , and value for money as well.

Knowing GW plc COULD deliver this but chose not to , is the source of the disappointment.

Whaddya mean 'etc'? And by the same token, if you think those two provide 'all the great gaming experiences', you haven't been looking hard enough.

That's a mildly frustrating point: A lot of people talk about how GW has forced them to move beyond GW games, but a lot of them don't seem to want to to move much further once they find a comforting ex-GW name as their new latch-on, for better or worse. (Don't get me wrong, sometime's it's better, but it's wearying to see a lot of newbies consider Bolt Action as the be-all end-all of WWII gaming. Or for that matter, despite the mildly insulting title Dakka pushes under my username, FoW.)

This pretty much is the most disappointing thing. They COULD dominate the market with good rules, great figures at affordable prices, great everything. But instead they don't, and want to pretend that they're some boutique luxury item with unique retail stores and a specific "experience" that goes along with it. It's most disheartening to think of what might have been compared to what happened.

Tips for getting a reply:

1. Include a self addressed envelope with a blank bit of paper (make sure it has a stamp on it.
2. Mark outside of your package with F.A.O 'name of person'
3. Try to ask something novel or interesting and ideally about something recipient cares about.
4. Be polite and don't ask anything where the answer will obviously be a company line style of answers.
5. Include your email address incase he doesn't want to reply using envelope.

I hadn't thought about including a SASE. I live in the US, so I'm not sure if that's completely possible. I'll have to check if the Postal Service actually has UK postage for sale. Regardless, even a self-addressed envelope is one less step they have to take. Thanks for the tips!

@Vermis.
I Listed Mantic and Warlord, as they are the two companies that are the most well known for being set up by and employing ex GW staff.
(And are where most of the people I used to write to now work!)
Obviously there are loads of great game companies ,do you want me to list the top ten next time?

The point I was trying to make is that the people who developed great games at GW towers are no longer at GW towers but have moved on.
(Apart from J.J .)

That's strange.
All veteran game developers moving on bar JJ.

It's similar to most of the veteran designers/sculptors moving on aside from Goodwin.

They could be genuinely happy at GW, or it may simply be too much of a leap of faith when there are university fees and mortgages to worry about, or too much fear of being exposed outside of the GW bubble as not being perhaps the talent they're made out to be, but something has kept one or two of the studio staff on when the overwhelming majority have moved on to pastures new.

JJ has written the DA codex in the former incarnation.
This was the first time that extra armor has cost 15 instead of 5 pts. Too much if you ask me.
The new BA codex is the first one in which the cost dropped to 10 pts.
