By the way the price that's "fair" is the market price. This means the highest price someone would pay if you threw it onto eBay, and sold it at the highest auction price.

I hate to say it, but I doubt that would be a number you'd be happy with.

What you get more bang for the buck on reselling, by the way, is the stuff that is easily replaced, and a commodity: your codices, and your rulebooks. Also, you'll actually fetch a few bucks for unused bits. I would never buy a SM tactical squad, but I'd happily buy a lot of bits, especially if some of the good specialty weapons are still there.

Yeah, I have to agree with Talys and Peregrine. I've bought models from eBay sellers, and I've looked at a lot more listings than I've bought.

Once the models are made up and painted, the only people who will pay high are those who are simply looking to up their model count and don't care about looks-in which case, they won't be wanting to buy an entire army, they want a few specific units. You can sometimes wedge a few extra units in with units that are 'popular'-ie, sell a riptide at an acceptable cost and throw a few kroot in. I've bought SMs this same way-I wasn't too keen on paying 'full' price for a bunch of tac marines, but I agreed to add an extra $4 (to make a round $30) for some built but unpainted tac marines, given that it got me the unbuilt bikes I wanted. Basically, the seller made a bit extra while getting rid of things that were difficult for them to get rid of, while I paid slightly more for models that I didn't have any immediate use for, but assumed I would eventually find a use.

Unpainted is always more desirable than painted (in the above case, I wouldn't have budged if they had been painted, and only agreed after getting photos that showed I could live with the posing), and unbuilt will also bump your price up.

You're probably best off selling painted models seperately, because they will be picked up by people who specifically want that unit and don't care about paintjobs. They will taint the rest of your listing-once even 10% of your army is painted, I won't look twice unless it's an insanely good paintjob, or the asking price is good. If you've got models I really want and you're asking for a very reasonable price, I would always consider throwing in a few extra dollars to take less desirable models off your hands.

This is a hobby where appearance (ie paintjob, positioning and basing) is a large part of the appeal; once you take some/all of those elements away, sadly your models aren't worth nearly as much

Also this. I've bought low model count listings (eg recently bought one SM biker) just because bags of bits were thrown in-I didn't care about the biker at all, but was very happy to pay $10 and get a tonne of bits that I had plenty of use for. Would have paid that for the bits alone, and even gone a bit higher if needed.
