We were supposed to get about a foot and a half, my work told us we could take the night off if we wanted, so I did, filled my gas cans for the generator, bought food...

There's a 15 ft x 5ft snowdrift blocking the front of the house, I shoveled a tunnel through it this morning to the front door, it was completely buried again within 30 mins. At around 3am our walls were shaking enough to wake me as the wind funneled down the alleyway between us and next door.

It looks like my county, Fairfield, got spared pretty nicely. Still, our governor has shut down I-95 through the state, to keep the other New England states safe from truckers. A very good call on his part, and a very smart man.

Suffering? Are you serious? This is nothing! Up here in NY State we got maybe 6 inches. That's NOTHING. And it's all powder too! No good for anything! Bah, suffering indeed All the others with huge snowdrifts, now those people I pity! And am slightly jealous of.

Well, when you've been on the road for over a week and found out you can't go home because the entire area (around NYC) has every road closed, yes, I think suffering is fair. Lol

As politicians rushed to out-serious each other, New Yorkers were whipped into a fear frenzy.
Every modern event has a hashtag and this morning, as New York City takes stock of the #snowmageddon2015 that wasn’t, it’s turning to #snowperbole.
On Monday, as Governor Cuomo, Governor Christie, and Mayor de Blasio rushed to out-serious each other, New Yorkers were whipped into a fear frenzy. Supermarket shelves were stripped bare, photos of Whole Foods depleted of kale circulated, and people stocked up for what would likely be days (maybe weeks!) indoors.
Even as we were doing it, we acknowledged it didn’t make much sense. After all, we’re in New York City. Bodegas never close. Delivery guys on bicycles have been a constant through all previous winter storms. All New Yorkers have their stories. That time we ordered Chinese Food during the snowstorm of 1994. Swimming on Brighton Beach during Hurricane Gloria. Buying Poptarts at the corner bodega during Sandy. Driving from Manhattan to Brooklyn and back again during the blackout of 2003. Yes, those are all mine.

There's 5 foot snow drifts blocking my doors, and the streets are impassable, however one of the nice things about old new england houses as they were build well before gas and electric heating became a thing. My place runs on an ancient oil burner (an upgrade from the original coal furnace, no word of a lie.) so even if the utilities go we'll be warm and well fed.

HOLY crap, is that guy really that stupid? I am from Maine originally, and I saw some wicked brutal winters growing up. It was the norm.
Huh. Must be climate change that makes Michigan a frozen hellhole that suffers through constant lake effect snow. Because it totally was not that since...ever.
The most surprising thing about this winter to me is that we are NOT getting what New York is getting! I was seriously worried, as my wife is due with our first child friggin' today. We had to drive to the hospital at 1AM (15-20 minutes on a perfect day) last night because of a false alarm, and I was so happy to see absolutely clear roads, like it was summer (as long as you don't look to either side, lol).
Here in Michigan, we started thinking about what we micgt have to do in case of bad snow when she's in labor, about August. Snowstorms, however bad, should not be able to sneak up on anything.

30" of snow in South eastern Mass (thankfully not coastal zone, jesus christ those poor people. 100% power outage in Nantucket, Da. Fuq.
The Governor so RI and MA announcing travel bans helped ; my work basically had to close up shop and give the day off, but they were cool about it. They are opening up tomorrow on a "get here when and if you can get here" basis... I might work from home. Haven't decided.
It's 50/50 if we lose power during storms, but they recently fixed the local substation that was having issues, and since haven't had an outage. This storm was as good a test as almost any, barring wet paste snow. No power outages, so that's good.
All in all: Number of hours spent shoveling in the last 21 hours : 6.5. Would have been more than that if my neighbors weren't fething awesome and ploughed me out (for which they were rewarded with excellent beer). My driveway is nearly 200 feet long is why, and it slopes slightly downward with the mouth being the highest elevation by probably 11". It is a royal bitch to shovel. I also have a wrap around farmers porch which requires shoveling as well.
And of course, the dog REFUSES to relieve itself but on bare ground, so there's a big patch on the grass shoveled too.
All in all a really brutal snowstorm. Worst single one of my lifetime since Frankenstorm hit Umass Amherst in the early 2000's (two big snow storms hit each other, collided, and dumped 3 feet in about 12 hours). Winter 2012/2013 was a doozey for pure number of times it snowed, but this one was mean for the volume and speed and wind with which it dumped it. Automatically Appended Next Post: OgreChubbs wrote:
Worse days of my life couple years ago -42 degrees with 3-4 feet of snow on the roads and weist deep in the lawn and drive way. Took me 5 hours to shovel my driveway. Went sleding then shot a deer. power was out for 2 weeks and had to stoke the fire in the barn to keep the house warm... and well 9 months later had another kid.
Well this confirms for me that Canada is Hell. Minus 42 ?! egads. That makes the -15 windchill down here seem downright balmy.

I think the horrible ice storm last year was one of the worst for us, in the last few years anyway. Gigantic amounts of huge tree limbs down everywhere. I had to park our cars in the church parking lot behind us because I was worried about them getting squashed. Our house almost did. A 1-foot diameter chunk of limb about 15 feet long speared down into the backyard from about 30 feet up, and then tipped down and broke part of the porch roof, all happening just inside the power line to our house. A couple of my coworkers had no power for a week and a half.
The worst is probably the year or two before I was born, where they had to use the national guard to clear the highways of cars, and Dad says he remembers walking on drifts to get down the street that were so deep every once in a while you'd hear the "clunk, clunk" of a car roof flexing under you.
Haight: I have once of those dog-patches, too, lol.

Aegis, I hear ya on how we're getting away with pretty good weather in MI. Sure, the temps are dipping into the -20F range at times, but at least there's not much snow to contend with compared to last year.

The current pictures from New York City look like something taken in Chicago the day before any random snowstorm.
New England is getting some pretty terrible snowfall, but the situation in NYC is being blown hilariously put of proportion. At least the news services there are willing to prove exactly how big of hacks their reporters are.

I've lived in the Upper Midwest for the entirety of my 28 years of life, and I can honestly say that heavy snowfall derails lots of people's lives; even when it is only a couple inches.

So the new groups like CNN are NOT blowing things out of proportion, with things like reporting from the "blizzardmobile" even after all non-emergency service vehicles were expressly told to stay off the roads after a certain time of night?
There are several crime jokes in there, and all of them snuck up on you.
That makes absolutely no sense....

Yes.
Also, I believe the "blizzardmobile" existed prior to the onset of the travel ban.

Boston Yeti is awesome, btw.
So my one lane road is still 10-12" snowed in. Last time i saw a plow hit it was probably 10:00 am yesterday. Gonna hit that with some neighbors later instead of waiting for the town. Long story short: my road didn't become a 'legal' road, even though it had postal delivery, until last year. So its on the very damn bottom of the plow lists.
Two neighbors have small tractor plows, they'll hit either side of the road, and i'll hit the middle with my snowblower.
Good news is its probably 1000 feet at the most before we get to main road which is plowed.
I'll say this, storms like this build neighborly camaraderie!

Well, I was coming from the west, rolled into town and found out the storm dodged to the east a bit. Long Island still got hammered, and upper CT and Mass got hammered. NYC met with next to nothing. I'm safely home, by the way! Finally enjoying a damn day off!!
